  1. My objections aren't that over-slides are being called, but that: - replay is always sold on the idea that ticky-tack calls are somehow not going to be reversed by replay decisions even though there's no way NOT to include them once you open that door. - I don't mind them being examined and then reversed if a team is sure enough to challenge them in real time. But I don't think you should get the right to examine the film Zapruder-like for 15 or 20 seconds first (they say there's a time limit but in reality it's until whenever the mgr decides to give the OK to re-start) before we go into a one-to-two minute delay while they examine 14 angles and then determine that it's probably/maybe more likely than not that he did come off the base for a milli-second at the same time when the glove appeared to be in contact with his pants leg.
  2. Clayton Kershaw returned tonight; first game since early May: 4 innings, 2 ER, 3 hits, 2 BB, 4 K But all this comes on the heels of news that LAD hurler Walker Buehler hits the IL and is expected "to miss a good bit of time" (Dave Roberts) with forearm tightness stemming from elbow pain ... and that's never a good thing.
  3. It's the bottom the 5th and the Yanx have 7 hits: one single plus six solo HRs Judge, Torres, Stanton, Trevino, Judge, Rizzo btw, the same pitcher, Matt Swarmer, served 'em all up. It's his third career ML start. Judge now has 24, putting him on a mid-60s pace for the season
  4. It was looking briefly like the Braves might have their winning streak busted. They were down 4-2 to Pitt entering the home 7th. A couple batters later and it was 10-4 ... at which point they were saying Ten-Four to the Pirates. Ten Straight. Philly also won today, making it nine straight for them including every game since Girardi's dismissal. And it's now five straight W's for the Marlins including the first two vs Houston to start the weekend. Oh and Aaron Judge hit the 2nd pitch thrown by the Cubs' hurler over the fence (1-0 in the 3rd) ... so other than those minor details, my day is going fine. But I suppose that's why you build big leads - so as to be able to withstand weeks like this.
  5. The existence of the minimum was to prevent pitcher wins from being manipulated; home team has a big bottom 1st (or 2nd or 3rd) manager pulls the pitcher so he can start him 2 days later and hopefully get him another quick W. Guy wins 75 games that way. A lot of 'openers' would have snagged wins over the last couple seasons w/no minimum ... most notably those on Tampa. With the value of the big W already devalued, scrapping the min would make wins easier to 'assign' but at the same time make them mean even less.
  6. I just realized that this is an Apple+ game. I wasn't going to see the whole thing anyway and now this means I won't see any of it.
  7. One could follow a whole 'nother line by wondering what the Mets were thinking when they traded away Rusty - to the Tigers for Mickey Lolich and Billy (though not Alec) Baldwin. One line of thinking at the time (not sure whether it was backed by facts or just speculation) was that it occurred not long after the players assoc had gained '10 & 5' rights over trades and M. Donald Grant, notoriously allergic to ceding any sense of control to the hired help, dealt Staub away before he could ever gain the legal right to question or veto where and when his owned ass could get sent. Rusty already had 13 ML seasons under his belt by the winter of '75/'76, but one more season in Queens would have been his 5th thereby granting him a new-found measure of control over his future.
  8. Like Bobby V, TLaR has both backers and detractors in sizable numbers, and he often shows (and tells) you why. btw, there were also two outs so it's not like the IW set up a potential GIDP. Nor does the WP alter the strategy much as all the justifications for walking Turner once the runner got to 2nd could be used for walking him as soon as he got to the plate.
  9. That's merely an agreement in advance of the arbitration process which was delayed due to the off-season lockout. League-wide arbitration decisions have been coming down over the last week or two but Contreras, like all the other arb-players, was already tied to his team for '22, only the numbers remained TBD. None of this means he can't be traded between now and whenever the deadline is these days.
  10. A bit late for a TWiB notes debut for this week ... but better late than never. -- Braves win again (Pitt) - 8 straight -- Phils win again (MilW) - 7 straight -- Marlins win again (over Nats) - 3 straight IOW ... we've had some ground bitten off of our asses over the last week -- Gerritt Cole serves up five HRs in the first two innings in Minnesota, including back-to-back-to-back in the 1st ... and the Yanx are winning anyway. 8-7, top 7 -- ChiSox/LaRussa opted to IW Trea Turner even after getting him to a 1-2 count today so as to get to Max Muncy who was fresh off the Dodgers' IL Muncy hit a 3R HR. LAD wins 11-9 -- Still only in the 2nd inning so I don't want to get ahead of myself, but Anaheim is in danger of scoring (bags loaded, 1 out) ... oe: but they don't!
  11. Friday night's game posts a 9:38 first pitch. Saturday the locals go full 10:08 on us before the four letter network dials us back to a 7:08 start on Sunday night for the second time in three weeks
  12. =MFS62 post_id=95453 time=1654816206 user_id=60] Bad luck derailed that.

  15. So this isn't going well.
  16. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=95393 time=1654743147 user_id=68] Who was Keith just talking about that was a great teammate and overshadowed by Dave Parker and Dave Winfield? Missed it. Thanks.
  17. And do keep in mind that BEST prospect (assuming that's even true at this point) isn't the same thing as 'closest to ready. The guys that make those lists are always trying to gauge a player's ceiling and then tempering that with the chances of him reaching that height. As a guy hitting well above his age group and doing so while playing a premium position makes him potentially long term gold, but that same logic got Amed Rosario top 5 props too. At the moment Alvarez has <700 minor Lg ABs and <200 of those above A ball

  19. =MFS62 post_id=95307 time=1654691064 user_id=60] Earlier this year, the Mets notified MLB that they were concerned about the number of their players being hit. The ump should have warned Darvish after the second hit batter and tossed his ass after the third. Buck should have played the game under protest until MLB reviewed tapes of the game and shown the ump [CROSSOUT]incompetence[/CROSSOUT] non-performance.
  20. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=95258 time=1654654093 user_id=68] So where was Pete hit?
  21. Dom Smith to the white phone
  22. Benjamin Grimm wrote: The Mets will be getting to Anaheim just in time for the Angels' new-manager winning streak. Seriously. Teams tend (in my imagination, at least) to play much better initially for a new manager than they had been for the manager who just got fired. I wonder if there's any truth to this. It's working for the Phillies right now.
  23. It was the several second delay Keith threw in there that set things off: Mets stroking out ...... their eighth hit of the game
  24. That wasn't just a bad throw by Machado, it was a lazy throw from the guy who once stated that hustling "just isn't my thing".
  25. 89 pitches for Snell just to get thru 4 innings. Basically about 50% more than you'd like to throw at that point of the game.
