  1. I've been hearing threats of fan boycotts since Ralph Nadar was threatening one (it might have been over the Seaver trade). The problem, of course, is that you'd need a large pct of fans going along and, as much as we don't want to admit it, some fans LOVE the DH, ghost runners, games decided by HR derbies (or maybe relay races), increased inter-league play, and little propellers on top of the players' caps.
  2. The only way to combat this is for an internet campaign to organize a mass walk-out of all fans in all parks the moment the ghost runner appears in the top of the 10th. I have zero belief that such a thing is possible.
  3. Verlander's got a bevy of CG's (at least by today's standards) and there's no way Noah's got north of 209 career starts. [oe: 26 & 144]
  4. Nationals owner Ted Lerner - 97
  5. SNY reporting it will be a three year deal. My guess is that this will be followed by his retirement from the booth. Not based on anything other than gut, but let's enjoy it while it lasts.
  6. The number six (for no particular reason) came to me as an answer to the JdG question. I'm sure I'll need lotsa clues for mm's quizical.
  7. Fuck 'em with a pine-tarred bat!
  8. The length of the deal could be interesting as it could be his final one. KH turns 70 this year and ... well let's just say that he didn't exactly inherit the 'Hardest working man in show business' title when James Brown checked out.
  9. Whenever I see this thread my first reaction is to wonder why we've got a discussion on the Baseball Forum dedicated to golfer Vijay Singh, especially since he isn't even a regular on the tour anymore. Then I read it more carefully.
  10. Jeter's not going to be in a booth. He'll be (occasionally) on the pre-game yuk-yuk show that no one watches now.
  11. =metsmarathon post_id=118078 time=1676038896 user_id=83] also, i miss t-shirt snipers in games. when did that stop being a thing?

  13. Edgy MD wrote: An original goal of division play was to shrink the size of divisions because the teams lower than sixth in the standings were largely considered hopelessly bad draws because of their seeming utter irrelevancy. Right, but just because twelve was considered too large when it came time for the 1969 expansion to 24 teams doesn't mean that it should shrink from the already shrunken number of five. And while, yes, Bowden is just spouting off with no real authority behind what he proposes, it bothers me that whenever I see this kind of what/if scenario the majority immediately jump to the simple math of an 8x4 set-up. My fear is that MLB will do the same thing without once considering that there even is a downside much less allowing it to factor into their decision. They'll be too busy patting themselves on the back and receiving plaudits from the media for having the 'wisdom' to follow exactly in the NFL's footsteps.

  15. One reason why MFY hats are so frequently seen is because they're the official hats of perp walks.
  16. PHAM (Pham) What you like is in the limo PHAM (Pham) What you get is no tomorrow PHAM (Pham) What you need you had to borrow ... And, for a guy who reportedly likes Vegas as much as Tommy P. does, those lyrics may be oddly appropriate.
  17. Beltran and the YES TV booth was not a good fit. Probably not all his fault: his English isn't great; the YES booth is often over-crowded leaving each guy scant time to sound insightful; he, along with co-newbie Cameron Maybin, came off as diversity hires when they were thrown into the deep end of the pool with scant MFY connections and seemingly little or no prep work. But if that stands as a first step for Carlos in his rehab towards a job in a front office then maybe it wasn't lost time after all. Maybin hooked on with the Tiger booth this winter (his first club) so somebody must see something in him too.
  18. I'm surprised that no headline described the sound of that HR as the PLUMMER'S CRACK
  19. That wasn't an obscure reference. It would have to be clearer by several orders of magnitude just to get to obscure.
  20. https://twitter.com/nut_history/status/1621136664289771529 I've always loved this picture Koufax, whose career ended before GTS's began and as Gibson's was just starting to crank up, is the lone survivor in that shot. Turned 87 a few weeks back (and can probably still bring it).
  21. You pretty much knew when the specific reasons for Howie's lengthy absences were kept under wraps as they were going on that it wasn't going to be something trivial.
  22. Five syllable names are required if anyone wants to do a Mets-only version of 'Van Lingle Mungo' Bri-an Bo-han-non Mich-ael Con-foooor-to

  24. Taijuan Walker didn't come home, his unborn child will never know him.
  25. Lefty Specialist wrote: Boy, it must have been really good to be Ralph Kiner back in the day. There was the visit to the booth from John Travolta -- likely in 1985 because I believe he was plugging PERFECT, a film starring him and Jamie Lee Curtis -- where Ralph chimes in with, oh yeah, I used to date her mother (Janet Leigh) after Jamie Lee's name came up. Travolta, though a Jersey/NYC kid, probably had no idea who that old man in the corner was (Ralph would have then been 62) but his face suddenly had a look of profound respect on it. Playa recognizing Playa.
