  3. =kcmets post_id=114891 time=1671136643 user_id=53] I mean really, did anyone use that freight company because they saw the ad?
  4. =metirish post_id=114886 time=1671130241 user_id=72] Looking for a short term contract of a couple of years with an opt out , per Boras ..
  5. Where is this running?

  7. Isn't Blankenmemories a contradiction in terms?
  8. So, assuming that Stevie allowed Billy to kick the tires on Correa as a 3B-man (I'm dubious as to the seriousness of that attempt, but let's play along for now), what's to prevent him from doing the same with Swanson? Sign him NOW!!!! Steve In all seriousness, I'm not even sure who's still looking for, and can also pay top dollar for, a SS at this point. All of which makes me think that Swanson's return to Atlanta is the likely outcome. It also makes me wonder who the Giants thought they were bidding against to get them to ink Correa for a baker's dozen.
  9. Sometimes the market, or at least the preception about the market, seems to shift in fits and starts. Keep in mind that when Correa first became a FA he settled on a short term deal with the Twins. Now, two years older, he scores one for 13 freakin' years with a (theoretically) better club. And, yeah, Covid was likely a factor for the earlier go around ... but still!
  10. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=114757 time=1670998982 user_id=68] BTW, the highest paid player over the last 20 or so seasons, relative to what everybody else was making, I think, was A-Rod, when he signed with Texas and eventually had the Yankees pick up the remainder of that contract when he was traded. I think that the A-ROd contract was and remains the largest outlier of a contract over that span.
  11. Danby Swanson apparently just got married (to USWNT player Mallory Pugh ... quick, draft their kids for whatever sport you want) so maybe that's part of what's delaying his FA negotiations.
  12. Odd that it took Stallone this long before he got cast as an Italian mobster.
  13. Benjamin Grimm wrote: What does this mean for Travis? Since it's a swap of catchers, it shouldn't really affect Travis at all. William Contreras (younger brother of Willson who hopped from the Cubs to the Cards recently) was a 24 y/o All Star this past year w/the Braves and actually out-HR'd and out-OPS'd TdA in fewer ABs (Braves catchers combined for 38 HRs in 2022). Sounds like maybe the Braves are opting for defense over offense. Murphy won a Gold Glove (grrrrr, shoulda' been Nido). Even if I were to buy the idea that Nido's defense was so spectacular last year in his 86 starts behind the plate that his was robbed of a Gold Glove (which I don't) you do realize that he and Murphy were in different leagues and therefore one player couldn't have stolen the award from the other, right?
  14. Both Correa and Swanson are former 1/1 draft picks (2012 & 2015). I was thinking that Dansby, the college boy, was older and he is but only by months. I guess I forgot to factor in the Braves' quick promotion tendencies and should have realized that they can get six-plus seasons out of a college draftee and still see him hit FA-gency before turning 29 (Feb '23) That the Yanx somewhat surprisingly re-upped IKF right about the same time as Rizzo took them (seemingly) out of the SS Sweepstakes in which most expected them to be a major player.
  15. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: I was just thinking of appearances. Like how long after your spouse dies are you allowed to be seen out on a date? Kinda question If it were up to me personally, I'd free it up by 2024 at the latest. But based on the current trend of the team's mindset, I don't think is gets re-issued at all.
  16. I don't care where the payroll is and never have. That's not what I'm saying here. I'm talking about not finding yourself in a position where you need to replace and/or retain your #s 1, 3, & 4 starters plus your closer plus your starting CF, all just to get back to status quo (except that each is now older, more expensive, and more committed to potential down years) because they all hit 30 (or more) and hit the FA market at the same time. And this is all just one year after spending the previous winter scouring the open market to find a starting RF, LF, 3B plus several starters and several relievers because you had no in-house candidates to fill those spots or were too impatient to wait and see if you did. I understand why it's happening this way now and you can't argue with the short term results. But it's also not a trend I want to see happen each and every off-season.
  17. Lefty Specialist wrote: Well, Uncle Steve's spending binge is allowing the Mets to hang on to their prospects rather than trade them. The farm was a little threadbare and it'll take a few years to recover. That's where the ability to buy what you need comes in handy. I agree it's not sustainable indefinitely but it doesn't have to be, if they do things right. Like I said, it's mostly a good thing, particularly when the new boss in town wants to show off by going from 0-to-60 in under 10 seconds. And it's tough to argue that it's Not working, at least for now. But it's not like they haven't dealt away prospects also -- sometimes foolishly (for Baez), sometimes poorly (Ruf) -- and we're not always going to see the success rate of '21/'22 or always skate past the pitfalls during the back-end of some of these deals. In short, they still need a strong/smart PoBO who will SHOW STEVIE THE PLAN!!! so that we don't wind up with a 1980's-era GMSIII, or re-visit Wilponland who, even when they were spending in the pre-Madoff era, could still manage to screw up a two car parade.
  18. A move which smacks of: 'Yeah, we didn't think it was worthy of retirement back when they left/retired but do now because we get to make a nostalgia/event day out of it'.
  19. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: How soon do you reissue #48? I'd have no problem doing so but, given their standards of number retirement lately: - less than 1/2 a career as a NYM (Keith, Willie) - barely 1/2 plus no championship association (Piazza) - reaching back decades to pick out a candidate no one really talked about during the intervening time (Kooz) - a quasi-retirement for a five-year/quarter-career NYM player (Carter) is there any chance they Don't opt to keep out of circulation and then eventually retire JdG's number? He spent (parts of) nine seasons here and is often described as be the closest thing to Seaver. And GTS actively bitched his way off the club, something we (with not a lot of proof) are accusing deGrom of doing only in a more passive manner.
  20. Lefty Specialist wrote: It's like Steve Cohen is trying to make up for decades of Fred Wilpon in one off-season. Two really since last winter had as many wholesale changes as this winter. And that's a good thing ... mostly. Cuz while it's understandable that Uncle Steve wanted to make a big splash early [and you gotta say it worked as shooting from sub-.500 to 101 wins overnight is the kind of turn-around you rarely see] it would be nice to get to the point where we don't have to undergo such radical transformations each off-season. Last winter we hit big on Scherzer, on Marte, on Bassitt & Ottavino & Canha, and, to a slightly lesser extent, on Escobar (and, yes, I realize some of those were trades rather than FAs). But it's tough to count on that high a hit percentage so you're going to have to expect some McCanns mixed in when you put yourself in the position of needing to fill five or six major holes each off-season. And this is all before we even get into how some of these deals are going to look on the back end three or four, or five or ... Gasp!, Eight years down the line. It's a tough way to do business even when you've got the financial ability to play at that level.

  22. Nimmo also beat the shift -- particularly with two strikes -- more than most LH hitters.
  23. If nothing else, this deal gives the Mets several years to find and groom and legit CF'er. Despite Nimmo morphing himself into a considerably better CF than I thought he'd ever become based on his early career, I've long thought his best fit to be in left and that's likely where he's going to wind up by the time this contract hits its halfway point so it would be real nice if they could manage to have one in the pipeline sometime before the present decade starts to run out. P.S., there's no way Nimmo intentionally altered his approach strictly for purposes contract negotiations only to plan on altering it back right after. Being a success at hitting is tough enough without trying to chase some old-timey baseball bromide from 3/4 of a century ago, especially one that hasn't even been true in decades.
