1. Oh good, another fucking shrunken screen!! It's been several decades since I watched baseball on a 19" screen but the four-letter network is bringing it back.

Mic up the player. Mic up the manager. In game interview with someone in the crowd. Look, GKR do food things too but we've never missed action and/or had it shrunk to a small box when doing so, or when talking to Gelbs, or during in-game interviews. But ESPN does it regularly because they don't think people tune into SNB in order to watch baseball, they think we tune in to watch ESPN. They wouldn't dare do that to NFL or NBA fans because ESPN actually gives a shit about those sports. They don't care about baseball fans because they don't actually know any.
3. And now a bobble leads to three runs (or more?).

5. ESPN insults no other fans the way they do with baseball where they deem that the game is of secondary importance to the booth.

7. Chris Russo was a minute or two into announcing Billy Beane's death on air before HE realized that he was talking about the wrong Billy Bean. Being first, rather than accurate, is the new media standard.
8. I hope they try some of that run scoring thing I've heard that other teams do from time to time.
9. Leadoff single, and then no one has gotten a ball out of the infield since. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

12. Padres not only won their 7th straight today but for the fourth game in a row they scored late to win. 8/7 - 1 in the 9th to tie, then 3 in the 10th to win 8/8 - 3 in the 9th 8/9 - 1 in the 8th, 1 in the 9th, 4 in the 10th 8/10 - With the Marlins up 7-2, Padres scored 2 in the 7th, 3 in the 8th, 1 in the 10th This one was the Marlins fault though. In the home half of the 10th they bunted the ghost runner to 3rd AND beat out the bunt for a hit. So then they decide to bunt the next guy too (with the infield playing in all around): Foul, Foul ... and tried it again w/2 strikes and popped to the pitcher?!?! A grounder to 3B resulted in a tag out at home, and then a K ended it. I could justify the first bunt, but was less cool w/the second ESPECIALLY after 2 strikes.
13. I wonder if the game will be sponsored by Goody's Headache Powder?
14. Scored a 22 and also had five Mets among the nine. Scherzer - Verlander - Kaat Koosman - Randy Jones - Eckersley Phil Niekro - Seaver - Catfish
15. Padres come from behind once again. One in the 8th, then one more in the 9th to tie it, then four in the 10th
16. =metirish post_id=165786 time=1723253108 user_id=72] I really hope the Braves have the Beat the Freeze guy race a Nascar during the 7th inning stretch
17. mlb.com: MLB announced Friday morning that the Braves and Reds will play a regular-season game in 2025 at the historic Bristol Motor Speedway in northeastern Tennessee on Saturday, Aug. 2, in the MLB Speedway Classic. As MLB continues its search for unique venues for one-off games. The choice of teams makes sense as the two cities are close to equidistant from Bristol, TN. (aprox 300 miles) It'll be the final game of a three-game series after Thursday and Friday games in Cincy. Sunday will be an off-day for both teams as the date will be kept open in case of a Saturday rain out.
18. Yanx losing at home 9-3 in the 9th to Anaheim in the rain. And just when I thought this day couldn't get any better.
19. And while it's certainly possible that Ottavino could be dropped between now and Sept 1 as pitchers return, the idea that such a move will be some kind of addition by subtraction is less true than some NYM fans imagine. Today's game was Otta's 177th as a Met. And while his ERA for 2024 hovers around 4.25, much of that is due to a 9.28 in May when (let's face it) everyone sucked. In the other months he recorded a 1.69, 3.18, 3.86, and (so far in August) 0.00 Looked at via a longer lens, in those 177 appearances as a Met, A.O. carries a 3.06 ERA. Wanna know who has a higher ERA among NYM relievers of note? No? Well I'm gonna tell you anyway: John Franco, Roger McDowell, Tug McGraw, Jeurys Familia, Edwin Diaz, Pedro Feliciano, Turn Wendell, Seth Lugo, and Neil Allen Now those are different pitchers with different roles in different times and I'm not pushing the idea the one stat, ERA in this case, is the definitive measure of pitcher effectiveness, so if you/they got somebody better then I'm willing to listen. But let's not pretend that they'd be taking out the trash by getting rid of him.
20. So if the season ended today (and I don't think it does, but play along anyway) the Braves would be on the outside looking in. The last time they didn't qualify for post-season was 2017* and I wasn't expecting a break in that streak this year. Thinking about that possibility after dropping in on a local Braves telecast earlier this season and hearing their announcers dismissing the Mets as a serious contender is kind of cool, even if it was a pretty sane conclusion at the time. * Braves went 72 -90 that year, a record they flipped the very next season. So since 2018 (in full seasons) Atlanta has won 90, 97, 88, 101, and 104 games. The year of their WS title? The 88-win season of course. Also, big movin' and shaking' in the wild wild (NL) west: At the conclusion of action on July 27, less than two full weeks ago: - the Dodgers held a 7.5 G lead in the division. They're 4 - 7 since and that lead in down to just 3.0 G - the Padres, who were 7.5 back, have gone 10-2 since and are now just 3.0 G back - the Diamondbacks were 8.5 back then and are also 3.0 G out thanks to their 10-2 stretch - the Giants were a whopping 13 G out but have run off a 10-3. Still 8.5 G back with two teams in between but they're staying within touch of the WC certainly. Today's wins by SFG, ARZ, and SDP are included in the above. The Dodgers are idle.
21. During the 1st inning double-fest, Gary mentioned the similar start to 2020 1st round Game 4 playoff game vs StL But then (at least three times now) he said today was the "first time in Mets history" that they've begun a game with four XBHs But that playoff game did exactly that and even a little better, not just four straight doubles but five in the first six NYM batters. Timo - Alfonzo - Piazza - Ventura doubled to start bottom one. Then, following a FC from Zeile, a Benny Agbayani 2B the 4th run of the inning and would have plated a fifth but Zeile was thrown out at home so he was like the goat of the inning. But in the 2nd the Mets loaded the bases w/2 outs and Zeile followed with a two run 2B
22. That inning (bottom 5th) could have been a lot worse. A couple of hard hit balls w/runners on, but luck and good defense kept the Rox to one run.
23. Edgy MD wrote: Lots of righties in the lineups today as both teams send southpaws to the mound. Mets give Nimmo and Winker blows. Nimmo's going to be pissed if his family is in the house. The Nimmo clan no longer lives in Wyoming. Relocated to Texas a while back; Austin IIRC.
24. =kcmets post_id=165640 time=1723138210 user_id=53] Morton can't get out of the 3rd inning this afternoon - 83 pitches - as the BrewCrew is takin' it to Los Bravos 8-sniffle...
