1. In the not quite 72 hours since I cited Judge's HR pace above he has added three more to that total*. He now stands at 51 for the year (only Ohtani has as many as 40) and is on pace for 63 * two today, including the middle one of the NYY back-to-back-to-back (Soto, Judge, Stanton) in the 8th inning
2. In contrast to what often seems to be the case, the Mets DID make efficient use of their baserunners on Saturday night: eleven baserunners, seven runs - four of the five hits drove in a run or runs - four of the five to reach on a hit wound up scoring themselves - one of the three who reached on a walk scored, as did the one of the two who reached via an error, as did the lone HBP In non-scoring innings the Mets went 1-2-3 in four of them, and 1-2-3 interrupted by only a solo HR in two more
3. It just seems like Machado doesn't care sometimes.
4. btw, any coincidence that we seem to be using 'Grimace' purple in this thread?!? Marte seems more sure of himself defensively since his most recent return. I called him a defensive liability in a thread earlier this season but, right now anyway, he doesn't look like it.
5. Didn't leave runners stranded w/2 outs during THAT inning. And that it further rubs salt into the Machado wound makes things that much sweeter.
6. Gotta admit, I like it when Machado messes up and/or has bad stuff happen to him, more so than with most opposing players.
7. Got two breaks that inning: Nimmo's non-called strike three and the pillow double That said, we also failed to make our own breaks by failing twice to get a ball out of the infield w/RiSP Getting a little tired of thinking, 'yeah we left runs out there ... but at least we made the pitcher throw a lot of pitches.
8. Sox entered bottom 9 down 4-0 to Arizona in Fenway. Closer Paul Seawald gave up a single then RBI double in his first four pitches ... and that's where the comeback died. I think that's the DBacks' 30th win in their last 20 games but I'm gong to have to check the record on that.
9. Well if we're going to rev ourselves up by having this much purple floating around ...
10. If you're gonna not pitch and gonna not hit, at least they chose to not do both at the same time. Turn the page.
11. Nuñez activated, Brazoban optioned. Even if this wasn't the right move for purely effectiveness reasons, Brazoban would be unavailable for most of the upcoming week anyway on account of the 156* or so pitches it took him just to protect a seven run lead last night so you could justify the move on that basis alone. * OK it was really only 36 but, still, that's a shit-ton just to get through one inning and seven batters
12. Mariners fire manager Scott Servais 44 - 31 on June 18 20 - 33 since ... or 17 - 33 (.340) vs non-NYM clubs since June 18
13. Yanx won this afternoon vs Cleveland. Cole and relievers combined for a one-hitter. But the bigger news is that Judge HR'd again. That's four for the three game series. (Yanx took 2/3) So he's now at 48 for the season and on pace for 61 (60.75 if you want to quibble). He leads all the AL in WAR, OBA, SLG, OPS (duh!), Total Bases, HRs (by 11), RBIs (by 17) and extra base hits. He's hitting .334, second (12 pts) behind Bobby Witt. Is also second in walks (3 behind Soto) and first in intentional walks (17). He's also a pretty good outfielder and has six stolen bases without getting caught.
14. Phils tie up the Braves ... although the big news from Atlanta is the 'The Freeze' lost his race tonight. Film at 11
15. Scoreboard watching after a day game: - Brave just went up 2-0 on Philly (2R HR Orlando Arcia off Nola). Phils hitting in the 5th - Padres getting thumped by mini-soda, 10-1 after 5 - Marlins taking it to the DBacks but still time to go, 6-3 in the 6th - Giants did lose to the ChiSox earlier So today is shaping up to be as good as Tuesday was bad for NYM post-season chances.
16. Joey Votto has retired. He signed a minor league contract with his home country Blue Jays this spring but never got a call-up to the big club so, after a not-very inspiring 14-for-104 (3 2Bs, 2 HRs) stint at several minor league levels, he's walking away effective immediately.
17. I also only manage to get to I.G. two, maybe three times a week and if I don't see at least the possibility of getting to nine I generally punt. I just don't have the patience to sit there and stew over which Cub might also have been an Oriole. Ten minutes, tops, and I'm out. If we did have a WORDLE-like contest I'd finish in dead last place every single month.
18. Just caught up via the delayed streaming cast. Gotta say, I wasn't expecting that! oe: I also didn't think he 'got it' off the bat. That carried real well. Ron (during the wrap-up w/G & K): 'Games like this are why we three still do this'
19. Yanx lost by the same 9-5 score as us on Wednesday, but that game was 3-3 after 9 Both teams failed to score in the 10th and in the 11th despite the funny runner. Guardians then batted around and put up a six-spot in top 12 while the Yanx could only counter with two. Judge (3) and Soto (1) drove in four of the five runs which is how things go most nights for them.
20. The game ending on a caller third strike is only too fitting.
21. I guess I'd like th thank the O's for pulling the guy who retired four straight following the 3R HR ... but it probably doesn't matter at this point.
22. The entire 8th inning comeback wiped out on one bloop single.
23. Well this is an interesting turn of events!
24. I'm calling the playing of the National Anthem the turning point of the game.
