  1. There's also the possiblity that if Alou needs to get DL'd then Pelfrey will be re-called to take his place. The injury would negate the 10-day rule.
  2. That's 5 teams for J.J. in less than 18 months Balt to NYM - Jan '06 NYM to Ariz - May '06 Ariz to Fla - Apr '07 Fla to Colo - May '07
  3. Carlos Gomez: Bent-knee stance that shrinks his 6' 4" frame to something considerably shorter. Starts in an open stance which he closes up before the pitch in delivered. Bat close to laying on his shoulder, something associated most often as a non-power hitter's position. Runs in a low stride with a lot of upper-body movement - somewhat reminiscent of Willie Mays as Gary pointed out today. Still looks like a teenager
  4. Meaning that we'll miss Lily in the Cubs series this week and he's been pitching well lately That Fred Lewis 5 hits included the cycle in only his 16 ML game. Cycles are a quirk more than anything ... but it's still kinda kool. The Pettitte effort looked a bit better than it was, Seattle should have scored at least 6. * I'm Robin ... where's Batman?
  5. But triple hottiness makes me happy!
  6. ]Gary likened Gomez running to Willie Mays, and he's right,in full stride he looks like Mays. At least then he was just likening his running style to that of Mays -- and he's right, it kind of is. There could be 20 guys in the league right now as fast as Mays was in his prime, but that's a whole lot different from saying that they can play like him and you'll find a defensive CFer as good as Torii once or twice a decade if you're lucky. Speed's one thing but, unless young Carlos is catching balls while doing handstands down in AA there, scouts invoking TH type-of-D need to be sedated before going totally overboard.
  7. Poor Lastings can't catch a break. - gets drafted despite stories of past improprieties, then has his signing delayed due to renewed (and ulimately untrue) stories about the same incident. - then breaks his finger in the early weeks of his first season, effectively delaying the start of his career until just about a year after the draft - gets left off the post-season roster when he probably could have been used - makes the team after a great Spring Training but mostly sits due to big contracts in front of him then gets sent down when those contracts get off to fast starts - gets hurt in the minor legues just before an opening comes up top
  8. Somewhat surprising in that there's no obvious replacement for Pelfrey's next start as it sounds like at least one go 'round until El Ducky is ready. But I guess they didn't want to send Pelfrey out there again w/o getting a AAA tune-up and they didn't want to send down position player w/Alou on the shelf for a bit ... or longer. Green has some ugly looking numbers against Capuano so I like throwing the kid into the mess immediately. "Starting the clock" on him is really no big deal. He was already on the 40 and if this only turns into a week or two stay then those days aren't going to make much difference in the long run. And if we're worried about not being able to send him down 3 years from now because we burned an option in May of '07 then the progress he's been making up to this point has stalled and the options thingie is the least of our worries.
  9. ]Gary said scouts have likened his defence to Torii Hunter. Let's wait a while before going that far. Charles Newtown in to pitch for the Brew Crew (Carlos Villanueva)
  10. Looks like we got Ollie Jeckle so far today. Now we just need to keep Ollie Hyde away for the next couple of innings
  11. Strong north wind today (trust me, I just came in from a bike ride) which usually means a tough day to get one out of Shea. Ollie taking advantage of that by serving up 5 fly balls over the first 2 innings and letting the track stars chase them down.
  12. Attention Jose Valentin, please report to the platoon desk immediately upon your arrival. OK, maybe I'm exaggerating, but Easley's sure made the most of his few ABs
  13. Top 1: Ollie works around a leadoff walk on 2 FOs and a K.
  14. That's a nice relay team in the OF ... just don't drop the baton!!
  15. bmfc1 wrote: Newhan TEN Glad that you're participating ... but unfortunately, this vote won't fly. We're not picky about a lot of things around here, but the Player of the Game votes are the one place we are on account of an automatic system which tabulates these and calculates them into players of the game, month & even year. Basically, there's a ten-point max on each game, but also a six-point max on any one player. Plus, on stinkers like this game, you're always free to award less than the max. Full rules here So you'll need to either re-cast your vote or it simply won't be counted.
  16. Newhan - 2.0 Green - 0.8 Beltran - 0.5 Feliciano - 0.2
  17. Sosa - 3.6 Wright - 1.4 Delgado - 1.5 Easley - 1.5 Feliciano - 0.3 Wagner - 1.1 LoDuca - 0.3 Alou - 0.3
  18. The argument FOR bunting w/Sosa there is that it avoids the GiDP and (pretty much) assures that you'll save Reyes a shot - and have it come with 2 in scoring position. That said, I don't like it either, especially after 2-0 and esp since Sosa's rep is as somewhat of a hitter (at least occasional pop). Let 'im take a hack there and maybe you'll score a run by accident before Reyes even gets to the plate.
  19. tee-hee ... I get a kick out the wording in KC's posting level * and, on that note, mine becomes Wally B.!
  20. Great KTE - nailed everything worth knowing. Like most suddenly good teams, the Beermakers are doing it with a mixture: - new guys coming through: Weeks, Fielder, Hardy; - old guys bouncing back: Jenkins; - seemingly out-of-nowhere success stories: Hall, Turnbow - plus some calls that could have gone either way (and still might) like Suppan, being real good so far And, if all that weren't enough, their only real weakness at the moment is 3rd base where minor leaguer Ryan Braun is tearing things up (.358/.426/.716) and may arrive within the next few weeks. They also got a hot-shot pitcher - Yovani Gallardo - on the brink in case anything breaks down.
  21. "Rickey's Still Got It" If by "It" we mean an out-sized ego, then yes.
  22. Edgy DC wrote: Danny Graves, Asian-born, US-raised and half-Vietnamese is on the roster for the Long Island Ducks. Also has an Asian parent: Johnny Damon, Dave Roberts NFL: Hines Ward. NHL: Paul Kariya (Japanese/Canadian)
  23. - TransMonk up - KC on deck - Frayed Knot in the hole
  24. Maine - 2.8 Wright - 1.7 Delgado - 2.0 Gotay - 0.9 Schoeneweis - 0.9 Heilman - 0.7 Wagner - 1.0
  25. "The team slipped ... down to [no African-Americans]; it wasn?t something that just happened," Beasley said Monday afternoon. "I think it was a lack of diligence on the part of the Braves to recruit African-American players. Those are the offending statements. If this Beasley guy has a whit of evidence to back any of it up - other than: number is low therefore mgmt must be racist - he should come forth with it or STFU.
