  1. I had totally lost track of him, had to look up where he was. My memory of him is a strict platoon guy, killed RHPs got killed by LHPs. OK fielder, so-so speed. Christopher Trotman Nixon (he's the one!!) 34 y/o, was a #1 (7th overall) draft pick of the BoSox in 1993. Was forever linked to the Mets in trade rumors around 2000 or so. The other story I remember about him was that he had a child born on 9/11/01 and the events of the day threw a wrench into his travel plans.
  2. Perez - 4.8 Schoeneweis - 0.3 Sanchez - 0.3 Reyes - 1.2 Chevez - 1.0 Beltran - 0.7 Delgado - 0.6 Anderson - 0.6 Wright - 0.5
  3. He throws 19 wild pitches in a half inning and winds up curled in the corner weeping uncontrollably to the point where he's useless for any position for the next month. Or not.
  4. Not a chance.
  5. Sounds like R-Doc picked up a Saranac variety 12-packs whilst he was up north. 6 run lead heading for the 9th ... the Rangers got us just where they want us.
  6. Perez: I was sent by my government to strike out German Duran
  7. If we were to reduce Delgado's ABs by that much I'd just as soon get rid of him and play Carp full time. They also don't make an ideal platoon pair seeing as how both hit lefty and aren't good fielders.
  8. Omar's not really getting off unscathed up here, but the fact remains that A can fire B but not the other way around which is why the mgr is always the first one to take the fall. It's probably also tougher to change GMs in mid-stream unless there's some obvious in-house candidate around (and I don't that there is). In short, Omar's butt will probably be judged in the off-season but not before.
  9. Teachin 'em Texas boys how to play some National league ball.
  10. Triskadekaphobes of the world unite Kinsler - 2B Young - SS Hamilton - CF Bradley - RF Murphy - LF (that OF sounds like an law firm: Hamilton, Bradley & Murphy) Shelton - 1B Saltalamacchia - C (leads the league in a's Duran - 3B (I wonder if he and his brother were known as .. oh nevermind) Feldman - P Reyes - SS Castillo - 2B Wright - 3B Beltran - CR Delgado - 1B Anderson - LF Schneider - C Chavez - RF Perez - P
  11. "Accounting Regulation in the United Kingdom" sounds like something the Monty Pythons would make up and then tee off on.
  12. It will be a Day/Night, two-stadium DH (no surprise there) but it will be on [u:1ad16e8991]Friday[/u:1ad16e8991] (two weeks from today). Game 1 at [u:1ad16e8991]2:00[/u:1ad16e8991] in the house that John Lindsey rebuilt, and then [u:1ad16e8991]8:00 PM[/u:1ad16e8991] for the regularly scheduled game at Shea. Apparently they were waiting to see if ESPN would pick up the Sunday game as a night game, except that they're almost through their quota of MFY games already and they want to save one until the end of the season when they can be the ones to slobber over the LAST EVER GAME at YS-II. There was also some talk of going on 9/11 (both teams are off) but one or both sides didn't want to give up the off day.
  13. See, if I were going to want a Delgado caddy to play alongside of him I'd tend to NOT bring up a youngster like Carp. I'd rather see him play everyday down at AA or AAA than once a week plus the occasional PH here. But if they're want to try something radical and dump/trade Delgado then maybe you call him up and throw him in the deep end of the pool.
  14. Carp also getting some love from Baseball America who stick him on their 'Hot Sheet' for this week: Mike Carp - Binghamton - Age: 22 Why He's Here: Hit .522/.560/.913 (12-for-23), 4 R, 9 RBIs, 3 2B, 2 HR, 2 BB, 2 K. The Scoop: Yes, he's limited to first base, though the Mets have tried him in left field. And yes, he's not particularly good at either position. But Carp sure can hit, as his .361/.415/.562 line in 219 at-bats would indicate. The Carp bandwagon started go grow after his 2006 season with high Class A St. Lucie, when Carp hit .287/.379/.450 in 573 plate appearances in a pitcher-friendly league. Last year took away a bit of Carp's luster, as he hit .251/.337/.387 in 412 plate appearances with Binghamton after missing the first seven weeks of the season with a broken right finger. Now the bat seems to be back, making Carp one of the Eastern League's most dangerous hittersperhaps the most dangerous. Then, in a related Q&A session, BA writer Ben Bedler fields a question on 'How Soon?' by adding: At the beginning of the season I was skeptical of Carp, but I'd rather him at first base right now than Carlos Delgado. Now maybe he cools off a bit down the line, but right now based just on true talent and not name recognition, I think Carp is the better player. Maybe if they're looking for a "shake-up" this isn't such a crazy idea after all.
  15. KC wrote: Heyman's supposed to be on M & M D sometime today as well. He just was - essentially just repeating what was in his SI piece. He says that Minaya has been the main pro-Willie holdout (which is exactly the opposite of what Baddabingo claims to be the case but what else is new) but is getting to the point where he's a lone voice on that front and is rapidly weakening.
  16. SI.com's Jon Heyman is reporting that NYM brass met Thursday night and that changing of the manager - and maybe several coaches as well - could come within the next few days. Jerry Manual would be the likely successor where he'd get the next ~100 games to put himself in consideration for next year.
  17. That surprised me too. Suxx for Vance - who I could see coaching later on whether he ever comes back to playing or not.
  18. I am the only one who finds the concept of first searching for and then dragging up a 10-month old thread rather than starting a new one to be a bit bizarre, not to mention more trouble than it's worth?
  19. This WEEK is on the bullpen - Wagner mostly, although hardly exclusively - but the season is not.
  20. ="John Cougar Lunchbucket"]In 1998, I didn't feel like I should get on my knees and service Mike Piazza just for having been good for the Dodgers and perceived (rightly or wrongly) as anxious to reject their contract offer, and replacing a pretty good player in the team's plans if not immediately than soon, and coming in such a fire sale you could barely praise management for shrewdness in acquiring him. I wanted to see what he could do for us first. I was at either the first or one of the first games Piazza played at Shea (pre-bought tickets - didn't buy them just because) and was amazed at the number of Piazza shirts already covering the backs of fans as if to say; 'MIke's been my favorite Met since ... like Tuesday' But there's also a difference between not wanting to jump on that bandwagon and the rampant booing and talk-show trashing that went on when he didn't single-handidly win 20 of the first 15 games he played. His "troubles" when he first came here consisted of him hitting .344 in May/June, and .336 w/9 HRs thru July. Hate to see what the reaction would have been had he actually been lousy. What I suspect is that those two extremes aren't unrelated; that those who see the new hot-name arrival as a savior are also the ones most likely to be disappointed to discover he's human (see Santana's opening day) and react like some kind of promise was being reneged on when things aren't perfect from day one.
  21. "crazy-ass Milton Bradley lead the charge" Heh, heh - that's something the KC announcing crew knows for sure.
  22. Santana - 5.2 Castro - 1.0 Reyes - 0.5 Chavez - 0.5 Tatis - 1.0
  23. 7 day total, now 1-6 in those games. TEAMIPHRBBKR-AvgMETS23291914207.43OPPs30.118511211.48 This just keeps getting better and better doesn't it?
  24. Had runners on in the 8th (loaded - 1 out), in the 9th (loaded - 2 outs), and in the 10th (1st - 1 out) and scored NONE of them.
