  1. "The story does say the Mets would open in Cincy on April 6 and then play their second series in Florida. Season scheduled to extend to October 4; perhaps starting (and ending) later because of WBC or just because it can't start any earlier than it did this year (March 31) and it kind of cycles back to the latest it can start after an early-start year." So the WS is sked to end around Nov 15th I guess. Still odd to have both teams start on the road. They did that a while ago trying to take NE/Upper midwest weather into consideration but then went away from it amid complaints that teams didn't like to start on the road all the time. George, IIRC, was the biggest complainer. So naturally if they're doing that again you start in Cincy and then have San Diego come East?!?!
  2. Couple things here; - April 14 & 16 are real late for season openers these days, implying that BOTH teams are not only going to begin on the road but will be there for a fairly lengthy road trips. Unusual to say the least. They can't be THAT worried about completing on time can they? - I knew a guy who used to work in the NYM ticket dept and he always told me anything you hear about specific dates at this time of year were far from concrete and shouldn't be believed. Doesn't mean they're wrong necessarily, just highly speculative.
  3. From Bob Raissman at the NYDN WFAN announced Thursday that it has released Chris (Mad Dog) Russo from his contract. This means the end of his 20-year partnership with Mike Francesa on the highly successful Mike and the Mad Dog Show. Russo, whose contract was to run until the Fall of 2009, has been rumored to be headed to Sirius XM Radio. Sources said Russo has no signed agreement with the satellite company. Russo will not make a final appearance on WFAN.
  4. Match the name with an alternate career: Emilio Bonifacio - Opera Tenor Ronnie Belliard - WNBA shooting guard Ryan Zimmerman - Soap Opera Actor Lastings Milledge - Music Producer Austin Kearns - Private Eye Jesus Flores - Dance Instructor Aaron Boone - Cop Willie Harris - NFL Wide Receiver Collin Balester - Partner in an Irish Law Firm
  5. What they may be objecting to is the feeling that the Venezuelan baseball authorities are getting a pile of money for this stuff and are cheaping out on the players by pocketing most of it for themselves. If so it certainly wouldn't be an uncommon trait among authoritarian rulers, nor among sporting committees where the players are supposedly participating for no or limited extra pay. See the likes of the IOC, NCAA, AAU, etc through the years.
  6. I never put a lot of stock in blowout games -- either way. Some days you (or they) just suck.
  7. Mike Lowell, Boston - strained abs
  8. Maine - 3.0 Stokes - 1.5 Murphy - 1.4 Tatis - 1.3 Reyes - 0.5 Delgado - 0.5 Beltran - 0.7 Wright - 0.6 AReyes - 0.5
  9. 12 run lead ... 3 innings to go ... we're into the bullpen I think we have an outside shot at winning this one!!

  11. Yanqui followers have been so busy blaming ARod for all their problems that they're just now getting around to the point where they realize that "the home-grown kids" are more the source of their misery. - Cano's a lazy sucka - Melky can't hit - Kennedy just plain sucks - and Hughes can't stay helthy
  12. Looks like my pep talk to the Twinkies helped a little bit at least. They still lost the season series to the Yanx 4-6 but 2 out of the last 3 helps. Speaking of the Yanx (just caught the highlights of their game) Cano is turning into a real pice o shit. In the first game loss to Minny, he watched the slow bouncer that beat Mariano trickle on by him without a dive or even a lunge. Today he screwed up a possible GiDP by getting too comfy with the neighborhood play and getting neither out. A 3R HR followed. Then, after getting called off on a blooper by Cabrera coming in from CF, he didn't go for it but also did nothing to get out of Melky's way who dropped the ball trying to reach around the stationary Cano. That lazy 'tude, which was barely tolerable when he was hitting .300 with 40 doubles, has got to be killing MFY fans now that his OBA is barely .300

You know you can't find 71 virgins in Curacao. * The preceding was a joke too juicy to pass up based solely on the set-up and was not meant to question the morals or character of the nation of Curacao or anyone who may be from what I'm sure is a lovely island paradise
  14. He's also hitting .220 and comes with a $14mil contract for next year.
  15. Martinez - 2.6 Wright - 2.2 Sanchez - 0.5 Cancel - 1.2 Reyes - 1.0 Evans - 0.5
  16. Santana - 3.4 Smith - 0.7 Feliciano - 0.9 Delgado - 1.1 Beltran - 1.3 Wright - 1.2 Easley - 0.3 Reyes - 1.1
  17. Ignoring for a second the idiocy of equating Kunz with Wagner based solely on the title of 'closer' attached to their names while ignoring the gap of a mere 15 years of pro ball and 800+ MLB innings pitched -- "if Billy Wagner were a righty, no WAY does he not start that inning or especially pitch to the righty" -- I'm constantly amused as to the lengths some fans will go through so as to create "victim" status for themselves.
  18. I don't believe you can PTBNL a player on the 25-man roster. If it is Owings I don't know what would be keeping him from being named unless he's doing some rehab
  19. That's Mariano's first blown save of the season - although, oddly, he's been beat around in non-save (but still imporrtant) situations like extra innings and other tie games. Also, assuming that two of those runs were counted against Marte, that's like 9 ER on about 15 baserunners in less than 8 IPs for him since the trade. And he was the good reliever dealt at the deadline.
  20. 19-16 Boston, still bottom 8 Nothing pennant related, but SFG RHP Tim Lincecum left game in Houston after a liner off his knee.
  21. 16-16 bottom 8 in Boston
  22. Esp since Feliciano's 1st batter record isn't exactly stellar this year.
  23. WonderBoy doesn't come though this time
  24. My first reaction is that it hit his helmet seawolf17 wrote: And Old Man Hernandez is ranting again. "BACK IN MY DAY, the umpires never conferred! They stood by their decisions!" And I pretty much agree with him. Most announcers praise all this umpire cooperation stuff but I think they over-do it and Hernandez is the only one (at least that I've heard) who says that decision-by-committee isn't necc the best way to go.
  25. Would have been a monster inning if not for that catch. Of course the fact that Reyes was on in the first place was a bit of a gift.
