  1. I wasn't feliz to see that game-tying hit by Pedro. Rollins GOs and there's free baseball in Philly. btw, 3-1/2 hours for 9 innings of a 2-1 game?!?!? At least when the Yanx & Os did their usual 5-hour job today they combined for like 87 hits and 42 walks.
  2. Dodgers holding on to a 2-1 lead in the 9th despite out-hitting the Phils 10-3 Big Boy Broxton in to try and close it down.
  3. No, not the rotisserie kind of fantasy, but the Basball Prospectus annual version of thier projection of the best players over the next five years. They have several guidelines, mainly that you're trying to pick the best real team you can - not just a collection of fantasy league stat hounds. And, that while contract status doesn't matter, real life age and physical condition do which you need to consider as these will be the guys on your theoretical team for the '09-'13 seasons. Mets you ask? #45 = Carlos Beltran #10 = Johan Santana #6 = Jose Reyes #2 = David Wright Numbers 50-26 (plus some honorable mentions) and Numbers 25-1
  4. Six head-to-head games so far: Mets pen v Astros: 17.1 IP; 19 H; 10 ER; 6 BB; 10 K; 4 HRs; 1.44 WHiP; 5.19 ERA (plus at least 2 inherited runs allowed) 'Stros pen v Mets: 17 IP; 6 H; 0 ER; 3 BB; 10 K; 0 HRs; 0.53 WHiP; 0.00 ERA I think I may have identified a source of our troubles
  5. To which I'd say; "Buh-Bye" No way should MLB interrupt the season to play an outside tournament. Hockey does it but that's their problem and I'd take life-style advice from Lindsey Lohan before taking advice from the NHL on sport-promotion. It works for basketball because that's a winter sport here and a summer sport in the Olympics. MLB doesn't need the Olympics to promote its sport and if people want an int'l tournament they can check out Bud's WBC.

It's because the IOC is a very Euro-centric organization that's looking to pare sports off the docket that don't have world-wide appeal - especially to 'their' world. Both baseball and softball are also very time-consuming sports in a crowded Olympic time-frame.
  7. Santana - 5.1 Ayala - 0.6 Heilman - 0.5 Schneider - 2.0 Wright - 0.6 Reyes - 0.6 Church - 0.6
  8. Lost to Cuba yesterday, beat Japan (who lost to S. Korea) today for 3rd So Cuba v Korea for Gold. Korea leading 3-2 in the 9th, Korean pitcher loads the bases with one out on walks; Korean catcher gets heaved for arguing (I have no idea in what language) over the ball/strike calls. So SK has to change their catcher and they change pitchers at the same time - and with the bags loaded and the tying & winning runs on ... Cuba GiDPs and Korea wins the (last ever?) Gold medal in baseball.
  9. Ryan Church has been activated for Friday's game, Robinson Cancel demoted. Luis Castillo is expected to be activated for Saturday's game. No word yet as to who gets moved. AReyes makes the most sense - especially as how it would only have to be for 5 more days. Could even be a pitcher sez Jerry.
  10. Starting lineup for your home-town New York MetsK Reyes, ss A. Reyes, 2b Wright, 3b Delgado, 1b Beltran, cf Murphy, lf Church, rf Schneider, c Santana, lhp
  11. Yeah, Wiggy's been in LF for Lee lately (sounds like a bad OFer contest), Erstad has pretty much replaced Bourne in CF (Bourne's identity is that he can't hit), and Loretta at 2B in place of the KazMat unit.

  13. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Not that I have much sympathy for the guy -- who was the biggest bust for sure of the Benson Bunch -- but hasn't 90% of his missed time been due to TJ surgery? Nothing jakey about that. The last year and a half or so have been due to TJ surgery, but prior to that there were several bouts of minor injuries and concocted stories around them and info withheld from the team which prompted the rep of being a malingerer. Even some of his teammates took the rare stance of publically saying he wasn't working hard enough to get back on the field. Suing his former agent because his 4yr/$39.99 mil contract wasn't the $40mil he was promised also tends to give the idea that you're only in it for the Monet.
  14. ]it seems to me though that Ron(especially when Keith is there) likes to say things that can be taken as a negative towards 'stats guys' or as he has called them ' the computer guys' But not nearly as much as Gary does. He barely even makes an attempt to hide his contempt for the stats crowd.
  15. Martinez - 2.6 Ayala - 1.0 Delgado - 2.8 Wright - 2.2 Evans - 0.9 Reyes - 0.5
  16. Well the point is that I don't think (as Darling seemed to imply) that folks had dismissed Murphy on account of not being able to see through their slide-rules. Fact is I don't think Murphy was on anybody's radar before this year. When you start as a 13th round pick and then have an OK, though hardly eye-popping, season + 1/2 of minor league ball it doesn't get you on top of all the pre-season hot prospect lists no matter what kind of 'approach' you come from. This year certainly, for whatever reason, he seems to have put things all together and was certainly rewarded for it.

P.S. Yanx had the supplemental pick 4 picks before ours choosing OFer Bronson Sardinha (whew!) http://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?year_ID=2001&round=1&draft_type=junreg
  19. Randy Bachman showed up on Letterman a few weeks back. No Turners or Overdrives with him though.
  20. You have a point about the park but it's still less than one extra HR for every 100 pen-innings pitched and not enough by itself to explain why the ERA is so much worse than the peripherals imply.
  21. ]I wonder how their numbers have been relative to the league just from June through August? Something like this: ---Rel-IPPct of/IPHRERBBKHRWHiPERAIP/HRK/BBNL-Avg395.035%378192174166328421.383.989.32.0Mets390.134%375208191154325451.364.408.72.1APR92.239%8549353772111.323.408.41.9MAY82.133%774037297351.294.0416.52.5JUN89.136%8545443569131.344.436.92.0JUL80.034%774241337771.384.6111.42.3AUG46.027%513234203491.546.655.11.7 That's the League Y-T-D average, the Mets pen Y-T-D total, and then the Mets monthly breakdowns. Those first two columns are Total Innings pitched by the pen and then the Pct of All Innings covered by the pen. Like I said starting out, most of the overall stats are right around league averages with the rather large exception of runs allowed (also HRs are slightly high). Looking at it month-by-month, the WHiP didn't get out of control until just this month while the ERA has been worse all along since about May and has actually been getting worse even as the load they're being asked to shoulder gets smaller.
  22. metirish wrote: Darling said it again last night , these aren't guys that light up a computer when you punch their names in , Murphy played with Bernazrad's son in college , he liked what he saw and the Mets drafted him ... Darling seems fond of saying things like that , comes across as more a scouts guy than a stats guy. I heard that too but saw it more as a perpetuation of the idea that baseball is being run by a bunch of computer nerds who are missing out on all kinds of stuff becase they have their heads buried too far into their spreadsheets. Plus, if he really wants to divide things into two distinct camps, Murphy is probably more a "stats" guy - college pick, high OPB/plate discipline, decent power - than an old-fashioned, speedy and oozing with athleticism scouts' kind of pick.
  23. I'm sure there's a bunch of Met fans who would allow Chipper to have their seat as a collectable. Of course they'd give it to him by hurlng it out of the upper-deck while he wasn't looking but, hey, it's the thought that counts.
