  1. That's a quick hook for a guy throwing a 4-hitter.
  2. From Adam Rubin's NYDN blog: Theres been no formal announcement from the Mets, but all signs continue to point to Brian Stokes starting Saturday for the Mets against Florida. The Mets dont want to expose 21-year-old lefthander Jon Niese to the Marlins predominantly righty lineup. And the decision about which veteran to promote ended up pretty straightforward. Even though Claudio Vargas is not thought to be seriously injured, he was pulled from his last start a scoreless effort with grabbing in his elbow. Meanwhile, Nelson Figueroa has been dealing with a blister issue. Stokes has bullpen experience with the Rays, so it would figure hed stick around after his start.

  4. ]Like when the Yankees got stuck with Jose Canseco That one was a uniquely Yanqui fuck-up. A season or two earlier some veteren bat (might have been Harold Baines) cleared waivers and was traded to a NYY competitor during the stretch drive. This caused Mt. St. George to blow his stack and threaten to fire everyone if anyone ever got through waivers unclaimed ever again. So the next season when the Yanx put in a blocking claim on Caseco his team (Jays?) tied a ribbon around him and put him on the next NY-bound express train. IIRC that whole deal cost the Yanx $1mil or so bucks for 6 weeks of a DH they didn't need plus another couple hundred K to buy out the following year's option.

  6. ]Well, that's what I'm saying. He's tentative, as his throw on the pickoff demonstrated, like he's not ready. I didn't say he sucked, or would always suck, or was incapable of hitting a single off the shitty Padres pitcher, or anything. Murphy, on the other hand, displays body language like he's perfectly comfortable at the MLB level

Evans had some pretty good slugging numbers in the minors but his swing up here looks almost defensive, like he's so concerned about making contact that he's willing to settle for opp field bingles. Even his 3-double debut had more well-placed hits than anything really roped.
  8. ]You know the worst thing, the worst thing about the Schneid? It's that he's been just about as good as we have any right to expect. More singles but fewer extra-base hits (and that's hard to do) puts him performing pretty much along his career arc. The slugging has been pathetic - even for him. His recent IsoP numbers: 2003 - .164 2004 - .142 2005 - .141 2006 - .072 2007 - .101 So you figure, OK, maybe it's been declining somewhat but '06 & '07 could be partially a result of RFK and, either way, 2006 looks like a real outlier But then 2008 (to date) is humming along at a sub-Castillo level of .051 and you wonder how it was that he ever hit.
  9. Part of the difficulty making deals now is the result of dealing 5 prospects in order to fill 3 seperate holes (SP, RF, C) before the season even started.
  10. It's not like Wright (and the entire team for that matter) haven't already had two days off in the last 6. I suppose it depends on what he's been doing with that free time.
  11. Just in case some of you forgot about the early start today. Santana vs Josh Banks Banks got an 'ND' in one of those 2-1 losses in SD in early June, holding us to 1 run over 6 IPs Santana got a loss the following day by giving up 2 runs in another 2-1 loss

  15. Well that's going to disappoint all those fans who had already named Kunz as replacement closer.
  16. He's not having a good week. Baserunning blunders on two consecutive nights and was oh-fer-15 coming into this game.

  18. So the TB-Rays are finishing up their set with the seriously, I just used a racist word when I really meant "Guardians" in an afternoon game today. Down 6-4 heading into the 9th, Percival gives up one more to make it 7-4. So in bottom 9 Tampa responds with: - Double - Double - Homer (Gross) - Single - Walk - Homer (Pena) ... 6 runs before even making an out and the home team gets to do the jump-dance at home plate If nothing else, just the fact that the Yanx team, their announcers, and their fans have to lower themselves to paying attention to TB games makes this worth it even if the Rays ultimately fall short. btw, TB has already won more games this year than all of last and are only 2 wins off their best record ever! Oh, and Joba to the 15-Day DL (at least)
  19. ]Maybe [Humber is] turning it around Certainly not out of the question - although he's no longer 'young' in prospect terms. This is a portion of a recent John Sickels report (from about 2 weeks ago) on the players dealt in the Santana deal: Deolis Guerra, RHP * 10-5 for Class A Fort Myers, but with a 4.56 ERA, 56/47 K/BB in 105 innings, and a strong fly ball tendency. Velocity is reportedly down. Still very young, but lots of work to do. Carlos Gomez, OF * Hitting .250/.284/.349 with 21 steals. Fun to watch due to glove and speed, but horrible plate discipline and lack of consistent power remain huge problems. Big difference between tools and skills here. Kevin Mulvey, RHP * 4-8, 3.87 with 84/34 K/BB in 105 innings for Triple-A Rochester. A bit disappointing, but still has a chance as an inning-eating strike-thrower. Phil Humber, RHP * 5.38 ERA with 70/42 K/BB in 94 innings, 107 hits and 16 homers allowed for Rochester. Very disappointing, ratios are slipping across the board.
  20. Turns 17 today and has put up a line of .331/.370/.535 (17 XBHs out of 57 hits) so far against mostly 18 to 21 year-old professionals in 200+ ABs. If an American, he would have just finished his jumior year in HS and looking forward to being a senior and the draft 10 months from now. Imagine what he'd be doing with an aluminum bat to a bunch of skinny 17 y/o hurlers? Long way to go still obviously, but Wow! so far.
  21. Reports on the progress this season for both Humber & Deolis Guerra have been negative. So-so for Mulvey.

  23. Pelfrey - 3.0 Tatis - 3.9 Murphy - 1.1 Beltran - 0.7 Feliciano - 0.7 Smith - 0.3 Schoeneweis - 0.3
  24. Let's avert our eyes from Heilman.
  25. Marlins blow it open late. I guess I'm hoping that Fla takes at least 2 this week. All that really matters is for us to keep winning and the rest of that stuff tends to take care of itself. In the ALEast -- BoSox win and the Rays win. Meanwhile in Texas, the stRangers are trying hard to blow a big lead. They led the Yanx 8-6 heading for the 9th after serving up an 9th inning GS to Richie Sexson.
