  1. Yes he did but: 1) Only because they had no one else to put there 2) Only for 1 season and change 3) He pretty much sucked at it The other obvious one who comes to mind in Yount, but he was 29 when he made the switch
  2. Nice of Milledge to let Beltran's RBI hit drop in by positioning himself in CitiField
  3. Ron & Gary relaying some details of the go-ahead runs touching off an apparentlly very visable on-field feud between the Phils battery of Chris Coste & JC Romero.
  4. duan wrote: by the way it seems like the fan got escorted away by police - that's a bit harsh isn't it? I hope stadium security is still pummeling him under the stands.
  5. We weren't very cool in July or August. Plus a severe lack of contributions.
  6. Soloman Torres in the close against 8-9-1 for the Reds
  7. ="metirish"]There is talk of moving Jeter to CF . I don't see him as a center fielder though. I think most of that is coming from fans designing dream lineups for next year at the same time they're coming around to the realization that he's not their dream SS anymore. Who knows if there's any thought of it from inside Yanqui-dom. But who starts their CF career at age 35? That's usually about the age that guys move from CF to one of the corners.
  8. Gregg Jefferies for two weeks in 1988 after his call-up (Aug 28-Sept 12): 24 for 52 including 14 XBHs; .462/.500/.962
  9. From A. Rubin's blog: - "The Daily News has learned that [u:114e26a19b]the Mets are trying to buy a portion of the Syracuse franchise[/u:114e26a19b]"... but if they dont succeed Buffalos facility, which averages nearly 9,000 fans a game, is more attractive than the one in Syracuse.
  10. Smith - 0.5 Stokes - 0.5 Ayala - 0.5 Delgado - 2.4 Beltran - 2.1 Church - 1.5 Wright - 1.0 Easley - 1.0 Reyes - 0.5
  11. As if on cue, The NY Daily News proves themselves to be CPF readers and prints a piece on long Shea HRs. The Mo & McGwire HRs are mentioned.
  12. So this must be the Vaughn game. He only hit 3 as a Met against the Braves and two were in this game while the other was in late Sept and probably not a hot, humid night. I thought it came in more of a blow-out but down by 4 kinda seemed like too tall a hill to climb against the Braves in those days.
  13. - Tough day for the ChiSox. They drop a pair to suddenly red-hot Toronto while the Twins win their game, chopping a 2.5 game lead down to 1 in just a few hours. Also, after just recently losing 3B Joe Crede and MVP-candidate OFer Carlos Quentin, 1Bman Paul Konerko grabbed his knee and crumbled to the ground on a fielding play. - In Boston the Sox rallied in the 8th to go ahead and handed a 1-run lead to Papelbon ... who promptly gave up HR - 2B - 2B to blow the save. Percival left the tying run on in the bottom and the TB lead is back to 1.5 games.
  14. Nats going with Jesus Colome If he doesn't work out they're going to pick a reliever from Column B
  15. The HR off Wells was an 8th inning game-winner but that one was down the line up in the 2nd or 3rd deck (IIRC). A monster shot, but not the scoreboard one.
  16. No it isn't. I'm an idiot since that game was in St Louis.
  17. Was THIS the Mo Vaughn game? I remember it was in the last inning of a blow out but I can't remember the opponent. If so it was his last ML HR ever!!
  18. This is now officially absurd. I'm not sure I've EVER seen a player this hot.
  19. Recently banished to the pen due to sucking.
  20. Gary just mentioned that McGwire one on TV. I don't remember seeing that one or know specifically when it was. At one point in his record season (he set that record 10 years ago this week) the Cards had two DHs at Shea in a row due to rainouts but I don't think it was one of those. I know it wasn't in the first one because I was there that day.
  21. Delgado banking 'em off the scoreboard over the past few days caused Ronnie to call today's shot as one of the 4 or 5 longest he's seen at Shea. So, sticking strictly to scoreboard shots, any particular ones come to mind before we close down the old girl? I got two: - Strawberry off Valenzuela in a game I was at. Hit on the side where the Met lineup is listed right next to the 22-LF for McReynolds batting in the 5th slot. - Mo Vaughn in a game where we were getting blown out to the point where I turned it off. Saw it later on the highlights hitting about 1/3 way up the big Bud ad.
  22. ]If Wright hadn't got nailed at the plate... Lannan actually only retired 7 batters of the 16 he faced - guys who did the hard part and got on base handed them the other two outs.
  23. Kind of a quick hook for Perez considering that most of the Nat hits are just finding holes rather than hard hit (even the HR was a wall-scraper) but you have to make different choices this time of year. And now Figgy IS getting hard hit.
  24. vs. ATL Fri Sep 12 - Martinez v. Mike Hampton Sat Sep 13 - Santana v. Jo-Jo Reyes Sun Sep 14 - Perez v. Jorge Campillo Santana and Pedro now flipped to keep Johan on his regular day. So it's Johan on Friday and Pedro Saturday
  25. - Angels can clinch as soon as tonight (heh, heh) - Sawx and Rays play their 2nd of three (Kazmir vs Matsuzaka) where Boston can knock Tampa out of the top spot where they've been virtually every day since late June. - Minnesota starting to look shakey for both the Central title and the WC
