  1. Except that if the throw was late (and I think it would have been) it's still an error.
  2. Let's have some fun with old threads Who did actually suck this year? Lunchbucket = Brian Bannister - YUP Ian Kennedy - YUP Marlon Anderson - YUP Paul LoDuca - YUP Eric Gagne - YUP Billy Wagner - Partial Met Irish: Shelley Duncan/ Morgan Ensberg - YES & YES Miguel Tejada - NO Andy Pettitte - Not really, though fading Jack Cust - Kinda the same as usual Gary Matthews, Jr. - Certainly not good and not worth the money, though not useless Michigan = [the entire NYY team] Not each of them individually - but as a unit, yes Willets = Tom Glavine & El Duque Hernandez -- YUP x 2 Valadius: Dontrelle Willis Ivan Rodriguez - Yes and sort of Centerfield sez; Carlos Delgado -- Yes then no, but overall no. Soupcan sez; Luis Castillo -- Well he hasn't been good smg = Brian Schneider - Yes, but getting better Eric Gagne - YUP Dontrelle Willis - YUP Dan Haren (probably won't suck, but I'm betting on him taking a step backwards) - NOPE Mariano Rivera - NOPE (wishful thinking I suspect) Mark Kotsay - Eh Mike Hampton (if he actually takes the mound) - He barely did Shane Victorino - NO Scott Linebrink - Looks like he's been OK attgig: Torii Hunter - Def No Zito - Yeah Rowand - Been OK Mario25: Suzanne "face for radio" Waldmann - Heh heh Tom Glavine - YUP Mike Mussina - NOPE Any Yankee First Basemen - Most of them anyway Nomar - Yeah, pretty much GWreck = Ryan Howard Not AS good, but certainly not bad Overall some pretty good calls in there.
  3. I was at that game. My memory of it is that it was an infield chopper which Knight charged but was on the wrong foot to get off a throw and by the time he took that extra step it was too late and so he just ate the ball. Not played as well as it could have been but certainly not an error. Today's was MUCH more questionable. CC had time to glove the ball then spin and throw, but he tried to bare-hand it and never never got a grip. I've heard of appealing to the official scorer to try to get a call reversed but I didn't know there was some league dept you could go to if that didn't work. You can definitely make the case for a error but it would be kind of cheesy to get an after-the-fact No-No that way.
  4. Andy LoRoche's 5th inning dribbler to the side of the mound was mis-handled by Sabathia himself and ruled a hit. It turned out to be the only hit of the game for Pittsburgh in CC's 11-K/3 BB CG win. Milwaukee is going to appeal to MLB to try and get the official scorer's decision overturned. Didn't know that was possible.
  5. Not a great team to be starting three consectutive southpaws - seeing as how their lineup consists of Prince and a whole string of righties - but whatyagonnado! Brews finished up July getting pasted in a 4-game series by the Cubs and you began to wonder if this season was going to be another mirage for them. But they answered that pretty well by [u:f74dd4a306]going 20-8 in August[/u:f74dd4a306] and have opened up a growing lead for the WC (StL stumbling helped too) and still aren't out of range for the Central crown. I hadn't realized until about a week ago how good a season Cameron was having. Those 24 HRs are in less than 2/3 of a season.
  6. I think it's clear that the secret's been unlocked here: - score early and you DON'T score late (Fish today - us for like every one of our last 95 games) but give up runs early and you DO score late.
  7. Jeez, at least make them get a hit to win the game!!
  8. That call at 3rd could have gone either way.
  9. Heilman: 0 runs, 3 hits & 18 Ks in 12 innings this year agin Florida
  10. Bullpen battles suck when you're on the road ... and when your bullpen sucks.
  11. The guess is that it was a missed H-&-R (by either the batter or runner). Seemed dumb to steal w/1 out and the pitcher on deck. If Jerry was thinking about Lindstrom here as soon as he sent up the RH PH it was probably a smart move using the fastball hitting Easley over the off-speed hitting Tatis.
  12. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: We really have to be thinking about bullpeners with the best chance of helping the team win over the next few weeks. Problem is, none of them are on this team. At least Pedro F & Duaner continue the tradition of not getting the first batter out.
  13. There would have been a whole lot less drama in that inning - not to mention two fewer pitchers used - if Pelfrey had gotten the call on that 2-2 pitch to Hanley.
  14. WTF is Ross thinking ... that Pelfrey is throwing at him w/the bases empty, two-outs/two strikes?!? Don't flatter yourself sweetie. Only other Marlin runner besides that is the fly ball that Murphy couldn't find.
  15. Cubs go: K - K - BB - K leaving the bases loaded and the score 5-2 heading to the 9th No word yet on whether JC Romero's chest-punching, primal-scream act coming off the mound meets with the Jimmy Rollins standard of approval or if his claimed revulsion to such overt celebrations is a bit more selective in nature.
  16. Phils jump to a 5-1 lead on HRs by Werth, Howard, and Werth again, plus a 2-RBI single from (stop me if you heard this one) Werth But the Philly pen is getting tested again. Cubs have a run in in the 8th (5-2), none out, and two on. JC Romero currently on the bump.
  17. Gettin' lefty with it Reyes Castillo Wright Delgado Beltran Church Murphy Schneider Pelfrey State of the pen: Ayala - Def not available for tonight, both based on last night's work load and also a right groin strain, something he apparently did on the first pitch last night Schoeneweis - Tweaked his back while stretching, was not available for Friday's game and may not be for today Sanchez - Apparently has some sort of knee problem. He's not necc out of the picture but doesn't sound like he'll be the first one up Heilman - IS back in the picture after getting three days off following his 60-pitch outing on Tuesday Sounds like Figgy might be the first guy up (unless Pelfrey wants to notch a 3rd consectutive CG) w/Heilman to close and some combo of Smith & Stokes in between.
  18. First of all, their season is over. Impending hurricaine Gustav (sounds like a Commie to me!) is forcing an evacuation of the area and made Friday's game the final one of their season, 3 days earlier than planned. They're not headed to any playoffs. And could this have also been the final one as a NYM affiliate? So, as of Sept 1, any or all of them are free to be called up as reinforcements. Spreaking of which, Jonathan Niese was pulled in the 3rd inning of a scoreless game Friday (and just 65 pitches) - making his un-named status as Tuesday's starter in Milwaukee even more likely.
  19. This story gets a little bit bigger as the Royals #3 overall pick Eric Hosmer was pulled out of his game in the Pioneer League because the commisioner's office has temporarily unapproved his contract pending a September 10th hearing . From Baseball Prospectus: This is obviously related to the grievance filed by the union related to the Pedro Alvarez deal, and the Pirates official response, which noted that Hosmers deal with the Royals came into the commissioners office even later than Alvarez did. An ugly situation just got a whole lot uglier, and I bet were not even close to done yet. Plenty of time between now and the hearing date
  20. Perez - 3.0 Stokes - 0.3 Smith - 0.2 Castillo - 0.6 Beltran - 5.5 Wright - 0.3
  21. Tougher to predict what would constitute a satisfactory record during this stretch. I think the immediate goal is to end Sunday at least one game better than we are now however that's accomplished. IOW, at least a 2 game lead seeing as how the Phils have the tougher opponent. Phils-Cubs tied at 2 right now thru 6
  22. ="metirish"]I will never forget one of the first times I heard him commentating on a game , Beltran was racing home form first maybe , anyway it was going to be a close play and Wayne doing the call on Beltran rounding third said this....' and now all eyes fixated on Beltran as he rounds third' , it just sounded so different. I remember that one. It was on Tatis's first big Met hit - the game-winning 2 RBI 2B which scored both Wright & Beltran. I thought it was a great call. The opposite of what many had against McCarthy with his lack of adequate description about what was going on. But as soon as Tatis buried one in the corner everyone knew would easily score Wright w/the tying run. So Hagin immediately became our eyes with his "all eyes now on Beltran" call as that run now became everything. He then went on to describe every detail of the rest of the play, from the hit being fielded in the corner ... to the relay throw being bobbled by Hanley Ramirez and therefore no throw to home at all. We "saw" that play as it unfolded. I haven't been listening to the radio calls lately enough to form an opinion on his overall rank in the pantheon of NYN announcers, but he's at least got the nuts and bolts to pull off good calls at times.
  23. AG/DC wrote: I've got no complaints if you want to throw Ben Grieve in there. Grieve had the high-OBP/high-K totals, but didn't quite have the 'swing hard in case you hit it' mentality for me to associate him with the other quartet. Didn't have enough of a belly either.
  24. The 2000 Oakland A's softball team: Jason Giambi, Jeremy Giambi, John Jaha, Matt Stairs. Take a walk or swing from the heels. Only Jaha hit RH
  25. They trade an un-named prospect to Toronto for Matt Stairs. Basically a replacement for the injured Geoff Jenkins. Decent LH PH-ing type although not real versatile. Great slow-pitch softball swing.
