  1. I did this same thing a year ago so I figured it needs an update now that another season is behind us. It's a look at where Reyes & Wright are in respect to all-time team offensive records and a guestimate as to when they'll reach those marks. STATRECORDHOLDERREYESPLACEPctProj?WRIGHTPLACEPctProj?ABs5,436Kranepool3,20610th59%20122,65018th49%---Hits1,418Kranepool91911th65%201181912th58%---Doubles225Kranepool15510th69%---1836th81%2009/10Triples62Wilson711st---200810T-3716%---HRs252Strawberry6126th24%---1305th52%2013Total Bases2,047Kranepool1,3999th68%20121,4128th69%2012RBIs733Strawberry31022nd42%---4897th67%2011Stolen Bases281Wilson2911st---20089211th33%---Walks580Strawberry24123rd42%---34013th59%2011Runs662Strawberry5337th81%201046410th70%---Strike Outs960Strwberry38622nd40%---49913th52%2013 Doubles is the interesting stat to follow next year. Wright is 42 away from tying Kranepool and has hit exactly 42 doubles in 3 of the last 4 seasons (40 in the other) so his typical year would put him right on the brink. The other is Total Bases where they've been neck-and-neck with each other for a while now.
  2. Just flicked on the radio but it sounds like the entire first hour was hashing over the same topic; Met fan callers wanting to hold onto Reyes & Wright and Francesa mocking them for being overly sentimental (sounds a bit like Ira/Sal, no?). MF is proposing hypothetical deals of either/or for the likes of Utley, Rollins, or Youkilis based on the 'GiGS' theory (grass is greener) that the Mets are sure to come out ahead becuase those guys, unlike the ones here, are "clutch", "gamers", or "winners". He's also totally dismissing any age difference in the process. Just looked up a quick example: Wright 2008: .302/.390/.534 -- and in Sept 2008: .340/.416/.577 Utley 2008: .292/.369/.526 -- and in Sept 2008: .284/.369/.443 But Utley "knows how to get it done" in the clutch. Wright turns 26 this winter. Utley turns 30 at the same time and when he was Wright's age had ~ 400 total ABs in the major leagues
  3. ]There are only three 'untouchables' on the Mets - Santana, Beltran and Pelfrey ... that Wright and Reyes are 'non-clutch' performers who should be traded while their value is high ... That if they bring Manuel back they must 'explode the core'. I just don't understand that thinking. Francesa's problem (with this topic anyway) is that he wholeheartedly believes in the clutch fairy. His view is that players either possess or lack the 'clutchness' gene and that any patterns associated with such an innate trait show themselves early and are unlikely to change over time. So in his world if you have a choice of starting Sabathia, Santana, Lincecum or Beckett for a big game you'd be stupid to pick anyone other than Beckett on account of him being a "proven post-season pitcher" even though his season wasn't nearly as good as the others. Ergo, in the world of the clutch fairy, since Reyes & Wright have NOT fared well enough during the last three Septs/Octs it's proof not only that they haven't but that they haven't because they can't and is a sign that they never will. So seeing as how those two represent the core (Beltran gets a pass on account of his 2005 October) if the Mets want to "take the next step" they're not going to get there unless a Rollins, Howard, Braun, type of "PCP" player (Proven Clutch Performer) is brought in instead of one or both of them.
  4. RealityChuck wrote: How does the team rank in GIDP? 129 GiDPs vs a NL avg of 124 a difference which is pretty much a non-factor IMO, especially when you consider that a higher BA/lower K team (like us) is likely to be a bit higher just from more opportunities and more balls in play.

  6. ChiSox get a late game Grand Slam from IF Alexi Ramirez (and man was he happy!!) to win their game 162 and now host the Twinkies Tuesday for the right to head to Tampa on Thursday.
  7. Rockin' Doc wrote: Ben Grimm - "David Wright tied for the NL lead in sacrifice flies." If only he had had one more so he could have won the sac fly title outright. If only he had one more we'd be involved in a play-in game right now (thinking back to last week's 8th inning disaster v Cubs)
  8. And the Sox/Tigers rainout makeup game which might or might not lead into a play-in game on Tuesday with the Twins is itself being delayed by rain. I believe this specific AL playoff (against Rays whoever it is) isn't scheduled to begin until Thursday so there's no immediate concern in Bud/network-land.
  9. ]Even if I take my rose-colored glasses off, I'm having a hard time coming up with why Johan shouldn't win the Cy Young over Webb or Lincecum. Or Lidge I agree and have been following this "race" for weeks now. In the end I suspect there are enough 'traditional' voters who will dismiss his chances on account of not enough wins. Prediction: 1 - Lincecum 2 - Santana 3 - Webb 4 - Lidge
  10. ]FK's analysis of Dunn reminds me of another Met LF, Kevin McReynolds. In some ways maybe, although McReynolds was a better all-around player and always played hard while he was on the field. Dunn's biggest drawback isn't BA it's that he's an atrocious outfielder who also had no interest in moving to 1B when Cincy was overstocked with OFers a few years back. And, again, part of the rumored problem is that he did little work to improve on it, preferring to do nothing more than to take his 4 hacks (or 16 balls) a game and go home. Maybe that's on the verge of changing.
  11. Overall pretty good for a team playing in a pitchers' park and virtually devoid of corner outfielders. 12. One of the (non-statistical) knocks on Dunn was that he never seemed real interested in baseball. He grew up in football country in east Texas and, despite scholarship offers as a QB, drifted in baseball simply because it was something he was real good at, but remained more interested in humting, fishing and football. He's a talented player with real assets but never seemed to get better at anything at least partly, it's thought, because he wasn't putting the work in. Supposedly the trade from the dullness of the Reds in Cincy into a real pennant race in Arizona woke him up and "they" say his attitude was rejuvenated and he now sees what he's been missing. A contending team who snaps him up and puts him in a good situation surrounded by some good players might, just might mind you, be catchng a real good wave rgiht on the brink.

  14. If that Philly/Brewers series turned out any differently we'd still be just as out of it. They picked themselves up out of their (much worse) losing streak and we didn't. I don't think they're going too far anyway. Sheets admits he's done for the season, they can't pitch CC every game even though they have little incentive to protect his arm, and their pen rivals ours for suckiness. I'm not going to bitch about their first playoff appearance in 26 years and, although I personally wouldn't mind seeing them dust off the Phils in the first round, I don't think it's going to happen.
  15. Perez - 2.0 Beltran - 3.0 Stokes - 0.4 Cancel - 0.7 Reyes - 0.3 Delgado - 0.3 Castro - 0.3
  16. And not that it has anything to do with the AL post-season set-up, but I'm getting a kick out of the fact that the Yanx & Sawx are still playing at this moment - and playing totally meaningless games at that. They got rained out last yesterday and the Sox insisted on making this a day/night DH (on account of being sold-out through like 2045). Then the start of that was delayed by rain as well and now the 2nd game has gone to extra-innings.
  17. Well, somebody is playing baseball on Monday. The Twins & ChiSox both won today, meaning that the Twins finish 1/2 game ahead and that 2008's biggest disappointment, the Detroit Tigers, get their vacation delayed by a day as they have to make up an earlier rain-out with the ChiSox. If Chicago wins that they then will have to go up against the Twins on Tuesday for a one-game play-off for the AL Central.
  18. "They pretty much got what they deserved" Yup! When you win one series since early Sept (they split several) and then score 5 runs in the final weekend it's tough to blame luck, or injuries, or karma, or whatever.

  20. Tying run at the plate in the form of a guy who needs all kinds of redemption.
  21. Shea security have a tough job on its hands after this is done. It's going to be one drunk and angry crowd leaving a stadium they know is going to be wrecked.
  22. Only bench player left is Easley. He's going to be batting 3rd this inning.
  23. Parnell is warming up for the RHBs. I guess Heilman is officially buried.
  24. Biggest problem now (aside from the pen of course) is that the batters next inning consists of Wright and a bunch of scrubeenies.
  25. And that is probably all she wrote.
