  2. [u:4449306c8c]Game 3, 4:00[/u:4449306c8c] Lester vs Garza
  3. Be honest now, does Murphy look or move like a middle infielder? Maybe he'll surprise us, nor is he as bulky as some came-up-as 3rd sackers (Giambi, Thome, or Burrell), but I suspect this is an experiment to make him more versatile in emergency situations than as a full-time assignment.
  4. I was with this flick early and enjoyed the inventiveness of it but it kind of lost me as it went on - only some of which can be attributed to Gere.
  5. Unless there's FA compensation involved: Perez, and possibly Ayala or for players not yet at FA-gency: none of this list there's not a lot to gain for the team in offering Arb, nor to the player in accepting it. If you want a vet back arbitration just locks you into a price you might not want -- certainly the case with Alou. And for the players accepting it would lock them into one team and a price w/o the benefit of testing the open market. For veteren bench players you generally either negotiate a deal with them or you don't. Arbitration rarely enters the process.
  6. Well then fortunately for me I am neither worried about what "they" say nor am I trying to justify the trade. My point was that, while Ryan did become a much better pitcher in his thirties than he ever was in his twenties, in addition to his fastball he also had a devastating secondary pitch and one of the strongest bodies around that allowed him to go deep into games and pitch-counts. Kazmir has neither of those. That doesn't mean he's not good or can't improve, it means I have doubts about him becoming the kind of top-flight pitcher that Ryan (occasionally) was. Even Nolan, despite his inclusion on that All-Century team stuff, was more there on account of popularity generated by his occasional spectatular-ness and wasn't on the level of the pitchers he was grouped in with.
  7. Game 3 in LA: Jamie Moyer vs Hiroki Kuroda (lethal bantamweight) Another weekend day and another 8:30 starting time (8;22 they claim). At least it's an NL game so the over/under for last pitch is still this side of midnight ... even if just barely.
  8. Yeah I read that this morning. Nothing like writing a piece which starts with the conclusion and then makes whatever assumptions are necessary to back it up.

At least it was a Saturday so the game was started at a decent time rather than end at some outrageous hour of the mor ... Oh wait! One of these days the head honchos will realize that they're shooting themselves in the foot by opting for increased up-front money in exchange letting TV dictate the starting times ... but I'm not holding my breath until that point. Neither starter was good. Something's wrong with Beckett although no one will say what. And while Kazmir obviously has talent and is still only 24 I'm starting to doubt his future as a real ace. His slider is only so-so and his penchant for walks, high pitch counts and HRs is going to get him into trouble. Given 5 runs in the first 4 innings he couldn't get through the 5th.
  10. Game 2, 8:00 tonight Kazmir v Beckett
  11. smg58 wrote: If Cano is that good, then why do Yankee fans always bring him up in trade rumors? Because he's the one guy still young enough and good enough to fetch something in a trade and they figure that buying O. Hudson on the open market will make him unmissed. All the other major players on their roster are pretty much untradeable due to a combination of emotional, contractual, or tough-to-replace reasons: Jeter, ARod, Posada, Mariano; or for age/contract reasons: Damon, Matsui; or for unproven-yet-potential reasons: Hughes or because they're free agents: Abreu, Giambi, Pettitte, Mussina So that leaves Cano & Joba and they don't want to deal Joba.
  12. Phils continue their 'big-inning-ness' this post-season. They've now been shutout in 41 of the 50 innings they've batted over 6 games and still managed to go 5-1 in that time. The main reason is that those 9 innings where they did score included only 3 one-run innings but 6 innings of 3 runs or more: 2 three-run innings, 3 fours, plus a five. And many of these runs are coming with 2 outs. Yesterday's 2nd inning involved 5 straight 2-out hits turning a 2-out/none-on situation into a 4-spot. 6 of last night's 8 runs came w/2 out. And then there's Bret Myers. 4-for-58 during the reg season he goes 3-for-3 w/3 RBIs last night making him 4-for-5 overall plus that 10-pitch walk that had a big part in knocking Sabathia out of the game last week.
  13. Through 6 with that no-hitter actually. Crawford singled on the 2nd pitch of the 7th. Matsuzaka is a good pitcher but geez he's a chore to watch. Not surprising that he was part of a 2-0 game that still managed to go 3-1/2 hours. Papelbon doesn't help either. I timed some of his pitches last night and he was taking 30-40 seconds between each, and that was with the bases empty. Every Spring the league starts yapping about how they're going to enforce the time-limit per pitch rule and every year it doesn't happen. Not that I expect them to start in a playoff series but I'm sure Papelbon didn't just invent this pace for last night.
  14. Leaving aside for a second that this is almost certainly nothing more than idle hot stove chatter, and that Beltran has full no-trade protection, and that filling a hole at 2nd would leave a bigger one in CF ... there are some young, under-control players you might want to bet on. But Cano isn't under control for any longer than Beltran is (unless expensive options are invoked) and I'm not sure he's the best risk to be that guy anyway. Last 3 seasons: BA: .342, .306, .271 OBA: .365, .353, .305 SLG: .525, .488, .410 None of which proves those trends are irreversible, but it's not a good sign when your prime numbers are headed south during the age 23-25 years (turns 26 next week). That's exactly when they should be climbing.
  15. Yes, the AL games will all be on TBS and the NL all on FOX
  16. Game 1: 8:something tonight first pitch in the St Pete dingy dome Matsuzaka vs Scott Shields Mike Lowell (hip) is out of the series for Boston
  17. Game 2, 4:00 EDT: Myers vs Billingsley Charlie Manuel's mother died at some point since the end of last night's game. Not sure if he's going to be in the dugout for this game or not.
  18. Perez definitely, and probably Ayala. Ollie is the only one likely to net you any draft compensation if he leaves so you'd offer to him for that reason alone. Of the others, Tatis for sure and maybe Easley are worth looking into bringing back. But if they can't land them at a decent price through negotiation they probably won't go the arbi route.
  19. Lidge closes it out: FO, FO, K A playoff game played in 2:36. I didn't know that still happened. Tomorrow's the AL so the over/under is 3:36 ... and I'm taking the over.
  20. Phils continuing their post-season streak of relying on the HR and bunching all their runs in one inning. They were down 2-0 before an error (on Furcal) HR (Utley) & HR (Burrell) gave them the lead (and that was it for Lowe). Hamels pulled after 7 Torre went to Maddux for an inning of relief. X-Met factors in LA: Jeff Kent and Chan Ho Park Madson gets the Phils thru the 8th
  21. Most likely to be back = Warthen Least likely to be back = Aguayo, Conti
  22. 8:22 first pitch (or so they claim) at CBP in Philadelphia Hamels vs Lowe Hamels faced LA twice this year, both were in August, both times going 7 IP and giving up 2 runs on 5 hits, one win & one no-decision. Lowe didn't face Philly this season Teams split 8 games this year, each winning all 4 in their building Dodger closer Saito is NOT on the roster for this round, leaving the closing duties to big boy Broxton
  23. The main difference is that a million years ago (give or take) English football and American baseball started and then grew in very different ways; one very much a 'top-down' situation (MLB) and the other more akin to 'bottom-up' The forerunners of MLB were created to seperate themselves from amateur baseball rather than as an extension of it. Then, once all those initial leagues shook out and the NL/AL merger created just one remaining two-headed giant, that top dog took the role as gatekeeper into the pro ranks as well. England's FA is more all-encompansing in the bottom-up 'pyramid' structure that Duan mentions. The closest we have here to that kind of set up is the way USGA runs golf in this country. Changing any of the team sports in this country so that they could handle a promotion/relegation system would require, if not blowing things up and starting again, then at least a severe overhaul.
  24. ]"The Mets will donate their portion of the net proceeds to the Mets Foundation. The Mets Foundation funds and promotes a variety of charitable causes, including educational, social and athletic programs for young people in the community." "Their portion" being the important words here. Part of it is going to the city (they own the stadium) to defray the cost of the demolition. Part is going to the Mets as mentioned. And part is going to the firm that's handling the deconstruction, the head of which has already claimed the 410' sign portion of the wall for his own. I don't think anyone has said how big a portion goes to who. But it reminds me a bit of those inter-city charity AIDS bike rides that seemed to fall apart a couple years ago after it was revealed that only about 20 cents on the dollar were getting to the intended target; people don't mind paying the price as much if they think the money is going to a good cause. Hard here to figure out how much of this stuff is.
  25. duan wrote: wouldn't getting rid of the anti-trust measures probably mean that all bets are off in relation to player contracts, minimum/maximum salaries, revenue sharing etc. No. Those things are all collectively bargained and would stand up even if such stuff were struck down. The anti-trust exemption has been gredually whittled down over the years (esp in relation to stuff like salaries) and really only exists now to let the leagues regulate the number and placement of franchises - and even then the sports that don't have the blanket exemption are still able to control movement to a large degree. I have no problem with getting rid of the A-T exemption but I don't think it's the sword over the owners' heads that it's frequently portrayed to be.
