  1. You have to remember that Jeter, Rivera & Pettitte aren't going to up the total salary as their per/year rates will probably be around where they were and maybe a bit lower. Vazquez ($11-ish) comes off the books so if/when Lee gets $20+ only half of that is "new" money as far as 2011 is concerned. Cano is going to get expensive but he signed one of those arb-eligible deals so, again, will make about the same in '11 as in '10 Granderson & Swisher are on multi-year deals that probably go up but whatever the increase it's a known quantity. They've already told Posada he's essentially the full-time DH. He'll get the occasional start I'm sure but their system is kind of catcher-happy right now and they'll probably go with a combination of Montero and some glove-first guy behind the dish. No way Montero plays OF from what I know about him and I don't think it's in his future either.

  3. "Winners of the award were determined by voting conducted among Major League managers and coaches, who were asked to name the players at each position in the National and American Leagues who put up the best seasons at the plate. Voters were forbidden from voting for players from their own clubs." - IOW, the same process as Gold Glove awards only with seemingly more adherence to the season's reality and less to reputation or name.
  4. What usually gets lost is the original source. Folks hear/read/see some legit news org giving out this "info" and say to themselves; "Wow, maybe this is true because [fill-in blank] is reporting it too!", not realizing that, no, this is NOT a second source or confirmation for the story, it's merely a report saying that someone else is reporting it or, in many cases, just guessing at it.
  5. Well, Rawlings name is connected to the Gold Gloves but that doesn't mean they decide it. They just apparently decide who decides it (managers & coaches).
  6. Probably, but I don't think what's left of that mag knows what baseball is these days.
  7. I confess that I have no idea who chooses winners of this award or how - but it seems to be where corner OFers get their revenge on CFs for the Gold Glove injustice. P: Yovani Gallardo (1st time winner) C: Brian McCann (4) 1B: Albert Pujols (4) 2B: Dan Uggla (1) SS: Troy Tulowitzki (1) 3B: Ryan Zimmerman (2) OF: Matt Holliday (4) OF: Carlos Gonzalez (1) OF: Ryan Braun (3) DH: Vladimir Guerrero (8) C: Joe Mauer (4) 1B: Miguel Cabrera (3) 2B: Robinson Cano (2) SS: Alexei Ramirez (1) 3B: Adrian Beltre (2) OF: Jose Bautista (1) OF: Josh Hamilton (2) OF: Carl Crawford (1)
  8. I asked some Astros fans for their memories and the answer that came back was "very angry man".
  9. MLB.TV ran a 'top ten' highlights of Niehaus's calls. Best of all is that the top two both involved Edgar Martinez hits off MFYs - #1 of course being the game-winning 2B that scored Griffey.
  10. That '7 Train to Shea' rumor about Reyes being on the block is actually being quoted (and cited) by the 'Hot Stove' report on MLB.TV
  11. I don't think Neyer is talking about anti-Met bias per se. More likely he's: a) being a bit snarky/sarcastic with that comment and saying that the coaches who vote on this stuff rarely put a lot of time into it so one way to short-cut things is to only concentrate on those guys from winning teams The votes for GG are never released, but, if they were, it wouldn't surprise me to see the good fielder/bad team types who fans and analysts think were snubbed not be anywhere near the top. Throw that attitude on top of the ones where legacy and hitting are factored in and the whole thing is a real mess.

No, because between answers which seemed both contradictory and only somewhat nothing to do with the questions I asked and the multiple posts tacked onto each other I had no idea where you were headed. I disagree with your comment, though. The system is not less than perfect. It's cocky doody is what it is. Yeah, well opinions vary. The system doesn’t work. Every system ever invented is merely an approximation of what the "true" answer is - especially when the basis of it is nothing more than opinion to begin with. Feel free to ignore this one if it offends you so.
  13. 14. If your point is that our rather simple system provides a less than perfect measurement of All-time Met-ness then, well yeah, I think we already knew that.
  15. NL Gold Gloves: P - Bronson Arroyo C - Yadier Molina 1B - Albert Pujols 2B - Brandon Phillips SS - Troy Tulowitski 3B - Scott Rolen OF - Micahel Bourne, Carlos Gonzalez, Shane Victorino

  18. Yeah, it was specifically the 'closer to ready' part that Beane wanted for those A's. But there's certainly not only one way to draft and a team like the Braves have for the most part kept a well-stocked farm system doing almost exactly the opposite of Moneyball-style drafting; they pick HS & JuCo players almost exclusively and even rarely seem to leave the South East in doing so.
  19. I don't think that's safe to say at all. For one thing, the Mets in recent years have been drafting almost exclusively out of colleges so it'll be tough to tilt that any further. But also the 'Moneyball' philosophy of drafting out of college was, at least in part, largely due to Oakland's specific needs rather than it was from a view that college players make for better picks. The A's with their money limitations and in the midst of that good run they were having in the early 2000s simply didn't want to wait for, and couldn't afford the risk of, tougher to figure HS players.

  21. Amazing! Even his fans are admitting by this point that his defense has slipped and the only questions that remain about position change is when and where not if. Elvis Andrus might have to wait until Jeter dies because he may still be winning these things years after his retirement. I have no problem with any of the other AL picks C - Mauer 1B - Teixeira 2B - Cano 3B - Longoria OF - Crawford, Suzuki, Gutierrez P - Buehrle
  22. I kinda like Hershiser and if, as increasingly looks likely, Bobby isn't managing by April I could see him and Hersh paired up with some p-b-p pro for their Sunday Night package. Hopefully that guy is actually a p-b-p pro and not Chris Berman or some other ESPN in-house hypemeister.
  23. Miller still has his SF Giants gig and it would be great if TBS went after him as their lead p-b-p guy for their playoff telecasts. Ernie Johnson wasn't terrible but was mistake-prone at times and clearly is NOT a baseball-first guy. Not to be greedy but I tend to think that a baseball-first guy on baseball playoff games is kind of a good thing. Morgan was what he was and, while his act didn't bother me as much as it seemed to for most of the rest of the baseball-watching population, I'm certainly not sorry to see him go.

The ranking system overemphasizes team performance at the expense of the player's performance Aren't those two sentences at odds with each other? - In the first you say that the team outcome should trump what the individuals did - and do so twice, and apparently do so automatically regardless of the accomplishments in question. - while in the next you claim that team performance is overemphasized at the expense of the player.
  25. Hitting as a 2nd baseman isn't going to be Murphy's problem.
