  1. Was with Atlanta by 1985 and was double-switched out of the July 4th game in the 17th inning when ... Rick Camp came in to pitch. Prior to that he had been 3 for 6 with 2 BBs and 2 RBIs
  2. Years: no more than two - and if there's an option for a third thrown in it should be in the club's hands not the players or via some sort of vesting deal Dollars: I'm usually less concerned about this but, if for two seasons, shouldn't exceed $10mil total and I'd prefer it under 8
  3. So we've got: Heyman -- "heard Tak wants 3 years for $4-5 per, ... Mets offering 1 year and Coleman -- Mets offering 1 at $1.5 plus an option year, Hisanori asking for 2 yrs at $2 -- meaning that by listening to these guys we can figure on him for anywhere between a mil and a half and $15 mils .... glad we got that nailed down.
  4. On the plus side I bet the guy was getting senior citizen discounts for shit when he was like 50 years old - without being asked to even prove it.
  5. According to Joe Morgan, the entire team deserved induction.
  6. soupcan wrote: Yowzers! From the article Edgy linked: Samuels, who has not been arrested, is believed to have told Major League Baseball that he bet on baseball games, a strict violation of baseball rules. Samuels, the Mets' clubhouse manager for 27 seasons, was described by a source as a "spider who sat in the middle of a money web," a man who earned about $80,000 a year from the Mets but whose tax returns showed about $600,000 to $700,000 in income. He has homes in Huntington, L.I., and Port St. Lucie. Ballplayers are sure good tippers.
  7. NY Post -- In addition to losing Arias through waivers, the Mets also sent five players to Triple-A Buffalo after they cleared waivers: RHP Eddie Kunz, LHP Raul Valdes, INF Mike Hessman, OF Jesus Feliciano and C Omir Santos. The club now has 34 players on its 40-man roster.
  8. From being traded for Alex Rodriguez, to being traded for Jeff Francoeur, to being claimed on waivers. Not exactly an upward trending career path.

  11. Sawx pick up $12.5 option on Papi -- I wasn't so sure they were going to do that for a while.

  13. Sparky hair wasn't just going 'salt & pepper' before he was 40 but was virtually snow white. That plus some too much time in the Florida sun lines on his face always screwed up the age perception thing as he was only slightly older than the Rose/Morgan/Perez bunch he was managing.
  14. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Perhaps he's been a prime leak source (with his tenure/relationships making him privy to a lot of information to which someone in his station normally wouldn't be)? If front office decisions are getting to the clubhouse guy in order for him to then leak them then they've got bigger problems than the clubhouse guy leaking info. He's been there like forever, right?
  15. soupcan wrote: Wow - that was quick. Well, quick from yesterday's news anyway. Can't think of the last time I saw/heard from or even about Sparky prior to yesterday so this may be the end of a lengthy process.
  16. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Well, this timing is close to optimal, isn't it? Next year certainly better timing for us than this year.
  17. 'Moneyball' continues to be both the most oft-cited and the most mis-cited book in sports history. The idea that the club didn't want a manager with a separate and distinct philosophy from that of mgmt is quite different from the concept what they wanted was a soul-less and idea-less automaton. As far as Bobby's parting with Fred, what I recall from the time was that he was upset that he was the lone one getting the ax and not Phillips instead/also. Whether he expressed that to Fred in some kind of screaming, cursing, 'a pox on you and all your ancestors' fashion on the way out the door is certainly possible although I don't remember such a rant becoming public. But, clearly, the main source of friction there was between Bobby & Stevie.
  18. I honestly don't know at this point. Originally I thought he'd be underpaid by the time this option rolled around but that's not so clear right now. What's good is that at his age you'd be less worried about the years of the contract than the dollars. Usually I'm the other way around on that. And speaking of short-stops and contracts, the Yanx let it leak today that the Jeter negotiations "could get messy". Don't know if that's just before-the-fact public relations or if it means that the sides have exchanged preliminary figures and they discovered that they're several football fields apart.
  19. Jose turns 28 next season and is currently coming off an OK season preceded by a missed/injured one. He'd almost be a fool not to think that he stands a pretty good chance at being in a better contract position a year from now.
  20. - Reds pick up options on P Bronson Arroyo and OF Johnny Gomes - Padres pick up their option on Adrian Gonzalez - Boston's Adrian Beltre [u:3rhocb9i]declines his player option[/u:3rhocb9i] for $10mil and opts, instead, for FA-gency

  22. M.I. probably doesn't get the significance of the Alston inference. In the mid-'50s when then Brooklyn Dodger manager Charlie Dressen was coming off two consecutive pennants and asked for a multi-year contract he was told that the team did not give multi-year deals. When he insisted they told him to walk and, in his place, hired the relatively unknown Walter Alston who then proceeded to manage the Dodgers for 20-some very fruitful years all by way of 20-some consecutive 1-year deals. Granted that would never be done today but that was the reference. Speaking of HoF managers, word is out that Sparky Anderson has been placed by his family in hospice care due to complications from dementia. He is 76.
  23. So figuring that the Rangers will re-up Ron Washington, that leaves the entire planet of candidates up to us and the presumably budget-conscious Pirates. 24. String of bland field managers? Compensate with colorful spitfire (Wally, Bobby)?????
  25. World Series factoids: - The non-hitting Giants scored a total of 29 runs over the 5 games. The high-scoring Rangers totaled 29 hits. - A total of just 14 runs were scored during the three games in Arlington. 13 of them came via HRs
