  1. If that liner had gotten over the head of the IF this game would have suddenly become much more interesting. And, yes, that Marte AB was quite deflating.
  2. So let's at least make their closer, Shelby Miller, (assuming it's him who comes in for the 9th*) throw about a billionteen pitches in advance of the tomorrow's afternoon tilt. * And yes it is
  3. Not our best defensive game. Not our best starting pitching effort either. But at least we've got two hits and only one GiDP, so there's that.
  4. Evil twin Peter Davidson seems to be pitching this game.
  5. Naylor? I just met her!
  6. Yanx returned the favor on the Pads tonight. After giving up a run in top-7 to break a 2-2 tie, the Yanx hung up a 10-spot in the bottom half and wound up with a 12-3 win.
  7. Frayed Knot wrote: But there's no evidence that anyone DID extrapolate anything from [a HR streak]. I'll say it again, that was my point ... you CAN'T Extrapolate based on a few games. I was just giving an example. That was the ONLY reason for my post. No, that misrepresents what you initially said. What you said was: I recall that the Mets drafted Dave Magadan after he hit seven home runs in the college world series. They thought he would be a power hitter based on that small sample size. And my point is that there's no evidence (and little logic) to support that conclusion and plenty to suggest that he instead earned a high draft position (32nd overall) based on a HoF-worthy three year college career and Not from a short term power streak (whether it existed or not).
  8. But the topic of the thread is small sample size and my point is you can't look at 7 HR in the series and project or extrapolate anything accurate from it. But there's no evidence that anyone DID extrapolate anything from it. Or even that the seven HRs even happened* for that matter. Mags was drafted out of HS (12th round, Boston) but passed on signing to go to Bama where he had a Stellar college career: several time All American, Alabama Sports HoF, College Baseball HoF, Golden Spikes winner (at a time when Clemens and Bonds and others were playing). That he was drafted high following three great college seasons can hardly be seen as a surprise or a miscalculation and he went on to More than justify that pick. * The most I've found from the '83 CWS is "The Crimson Tide went to the College World Series that spring ... but lost to the University of Texas, which featured Roger Clemens and Calvin Schiraldi. Magadan hit safely in his first eight at-bats, including 5-for-5 in one game, and wound up hitting .550 in the CWS."
  9. =Fman99 post_id=191805 time=1746530286 user_id=86] Zac Gallen, who signed a big contract and now sucks big rocks.
  10. =MFS62 post_id=191847 time=1746558635 user_id=60] He hit 42 homers in 16 years. Not what is expected from a corner infielder. The seven homers in that series was more than any he hit in any entire major league season. Small sample size.
  11. I tried following Yanx/Padres before our game Monday night but they kept going into rain delays (at least two) and when I did catch some it was already 3-0 Yanx So it was fun to learn from Gary in the midst of our game that they later lost after coughing up four in the 8th to the Swinging Friars. The main culprit was Devin Williams ("Pete's old friend" as Gary called him last night) the former Brewers closer dealt to the Yanx in the off season. He lit the fuse in the 8th: K, BB, 1B, K, BB ... and then new closer Luke Weaver set it off: 2RBI-2B, 2-RBI 1B, BB, GO The season in da Bronx for the now former closer Williams has been a disaster so far: 14 G, 11.2 IP, 15 RA (13 ER), on 13 hits, 13 K, 10 BB (plus 1 HBP & 1 WP) That all adds up to a 10.03 ERA and 1.97 WHIP vs career marks of 1.83 / 1.02 over his first six seasons for the 30 y/o who can be a FA after this season. It's starting to look like Pete's HR off of him in Game 3 of that playoff series radically reordered the fortunes of both parties.
  12. THE LONG LOST KARDASHIAN BROTHER WOWS 'EM AT THE METS GALA While eagle-eyed fans see the jewelry on his hand and wonder if the the rumors about him and Vanna White are true as the former star 1st baseman gets ready to leave his longtime Florida digs for the Palmetto State
  13. =metirish post_id=191804 time=1746526654 user_id=72] Just saw the bomb from Pete , wow

If they had held Taylor at 3rd then Soto would have walked and Pete's HR would have been a 3R HR ... Proof Positive!!!!
  15. I thought that was a bad send in most circumstances, but particularly so with Soto coming up. We hit into enough DPs as it is. No sense in running into even more.
  16. =kcmets post_id=191675 time=1746404949 user_id=53] Hey Gary and Keith, I always thought 'get that guy a tin cup' jokingly implied that the ump is blind. It's an outdated cultural image of a blind guy selling perhaps pencils on a street corner and looking for a coin in his 'tin cup.'
  17. So that's 4 - 6 following the seven game winning streak. Overall you'd take 11 - 6, but it kinda suxx after that start. In the Mets 13 losses this season, 11 are by one or two runs. (4 - 8 to MIA, 3 - 6 to MIN] Other than those it's losses by 2, 1, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1 runs By contrast, 12 of our 22 wins have been by three runs or more: 6, 5, 5, 8, 3. 3, 3, 3, 4, 14, 5, 6 Not sure that those stats are entirely relevant this early in the season, but at least we've been in every game.
  18. I always assumed that it meant the ump's strike zone was too small, like it was the size of a tin cup. Keith's explanation was way off. The tin cup reference in the movie 'Tin Cup' was a baseball reference, not the other way around. Costner's character, 'Tin Cup', got the name from being a HS baseball catcher and taking too many foul balls in his metal cup.
  19. Frayed Knot wrote: There's a limit to how often you can make those moves these days. And also a limit on the number of times any one player can go up and down in a single season. Yes, that's what I was referring to.
  20. StL starter Pallante faced 21 NYM hitters and retired just eight of them! Couple that with all the hard-hit balls that became some of those outs and he's lucky not to have given up 14 runs
  21. It's <5 minutes to first pitch and we need an IGT so I'm putting up my first one of the year. Tylor Megill faces some other dude. And May the 4th be with us!
  22. Has anyone here ever used that? As with many "free" things, there doesn't appear to be an easy way to use the "free" thing without signing up to some site that makes you pay to register. Those games designated as the freebie should be just that. Click on the game -- via your computer/laptop, TV, whatever -- and on the 'Watch' button and it should allow you into the game even if you're not a current subscriber to MLB.TV. Also, the game that is designated as Free that day is often also the game that MLBN is showing so you can often get it that way if you have access to the channel via cable/satellite.
  23. Soto taking called third strikes in consecutive ABs: in the 4th (Acuna on 2nd - scored tied 2-2) and again in the 6th (Lindor on 2nd, Mets down 6-3) were both bad ABs Cuz while he's known for his good eye and both were borderline strikes, he's got to be more aggressive in those situations and I think that's part of why he's not been himself so far this year, he seems too passive. It's like he's early career Nimmo-ish, looking to NOT swing and hoping to get the call, an approach which is fine in some circumstances but I'd like to see him take a few more pokes at those with two outs/RiSP on rather than passively passing the buck to the next guy, even when the next guy is the hottest batter in the NL.
  24. Ours was the only game postponed (at least as of now) but it seems like it was raining about everywhere today. Games were, or are, delayed in Pittsburgh, Cincy, Atlanta, Baltimore, and it was raining during at least part of the game in Philly. Both FOX regional prime time games, Twins @ Orioles (after 1 inning), and Dodgers @ Braves (has yet to start), are currently in delay. Bet the network brass is loving that! There were two, two-out, 9th inning, come-from-behind Grand Slams today. - Cleveland's Daniel Schneemann (??) put the Guards up 5-3 with a Slam in top 9 vs Toronto. He had also HR'd in the 8th for all 5 RBIs - and with the Marlins down 6-5 to the A's and down to their last out, Kyle Stowers turned around a 102 mph fastball for a walk-off Granny. Kody Clemens, now with Minnesota, HR'd at Fenway with pops and other family members in attendance. Oh, and the Yanx lost 3-2 to the Rays despite another Judge HR
  25. Memories? One, and it ain't good.
