Cubs led the DBacks 2-1 heading into the bottom of the 7th at Wrigley this afternoon ... and held on to win 13 - 11 - first the Cubs tacked on 5 in bottom 7th to lead 7 -1 - Snakes came back with TEN in top 8 for an 11 - 7 lead - Cubs then counter with six in the bottom half HRs ARZ: E. Arizona became only the fourth team to lose a game in which they scored ten or more runs in one inning. This thread reminds me of the movie 'Grosse Point Blank' where Martin Blank/Jon Cusack finds out that the site of his childhood home is now a Quickie-Mart ... at least it is until it gets blown up.
So Lopez throws gloves, throws at hitters, and tries to get guys to throw punches. He's just not throwing a baseball very well at the moment: 10.57 ERA; 1.696 WHIP Apparently a couple of Nats had been hit the previous game so he took it upon himself to retaliate. The HBP of Bryan Reynolds might have been OK/call it even. But that one he sailed over McCutcheon's head, not so much. The only guy who seemed to be looking to mix things up on either side was, perhaps not surprisingly, Tommy Pham who's with the Pirates this year (so far anyway).

Pitchers train too much and throw too hard and have too many elbow injuries to have sufficient durability to go 9 innings much less 10. Yeah. There was a mini-discussion here last week as to whether the permanent ghost runner was a GM-driven plan ['We can't keep churning through pitchers like this'] or an owner-driven one [don't want to pay the stadium staff overtime]. Certainly both can be true.
Problem was, he did it in shorter minor league seasons and with only about half the power (he topped out at 23 HRs) of the likes of Rob Deer and some of his later disciples. Baseball America put Shirley in their Top-100 Prospects list (#74) after two partial low minors seasons, mainly off his .313/.457/.576 in 29 games at Kingsport despite his 35% K rates. And while it is, of course, much easier to judge all this in hindsight, I'd still like to think that ML teams and amateur/minors followers have learned to pay more attention to the red flags that go along with slash stats and small sample sizes to the point where they've gotten better over the years at scouting, touting, and drafting. Shirley barely even put up a BA above .200 after that month or so in Kingsport and never got as high as AAA.
Not the worst series of the year just because it was the first losing series of the year but because they played like shit the entire series. Not that there wasn't also some bad baseball in most of the series they've won this year.
