Turns out they're both small-ish (5' 9" & 6' 0") right-handers and both from the 10th round of the 2008 draft (one by Yanx, one by Toronto) who John Sickels describes as "not stars but possible useful bullpen types". For a 38 y/o, sub-.300 OBA guy who you weren't going to re-sign anyway you probably couldn't expect much more - especially seeing as how the deal will save you some $6mil (assuming no money changed hands). Of course that money is couch cushion change for the Yanx.
  2. Jeez it would be nice if we could win one of these tight games every now and then. Now would be particularly nice.
  3. Davey pulling Zimermannnn after six good innings just like he did last week in Washington. Can't say I'm disappointed.
  4. Doesn't Michael Morse look like a guy from one of those Natural History Museum displays that's holding a club above his head ready to finish off the Mastodon he and his clan have just brought down?
  5. The difference in this game so far can be summed up as Young's inability to globe Lombardozzi's lead-off batter come-backer and/or Valdespin's sudden GiDP-itis.
  6. He's still just 28 but has been around for a while now (how many years ago was it he threw that sloppy-ass no-hitter?) and will be a FA after this year - so he's just a partial year rental for Detroit too. The Tigers have been looking for a 2B for a while so Infante was probably the bigger key to the deal for them and he'll at least be under their control for one more year.

Haul includes a pair of arms who will no doubt be a pain in Mets' sides for years. One of the prospects - Jacob Turner - is a big-time prospect both in the Tiger system and MLB overall. Acc to Jonathan Mayo at MLB.com -- The key to the deal, Turner was No. 10 on MLB's Top 100 Prospects list and No. 1 on the Tigers' Top 20 at the time of the trade. He's made a total of six big league starts, with mixed results, but he still has the stuff and size of a future frontline starter. Still only 21, he was slowed this year by shoulder problems. He has a plus sinking fastball he can throw into the mid-90s that gets many a groundball out. His secondary stuff -- a curve and changeup -- is behind the heater, but it has improved. He has a good feel for pitching, especially for his age.

He never walked much even in his prime, so now that his BA is down in the mid-.200s instead of mid-.300s, you're right, he's not nearly the player he used to be. On the other hand he doesn't really have to be on that team. They wanted speed in the absence of Gardner; a glove that's better than Swisher (who is on the shelf for a couple of days at least); and it'll allow them to switch up the DH spot between Jones, Ibanez and whichever infielder they're resting that day. Plus it's a lefty bat and we know what that means in that stadium especially when compared to Seattle. He has 4 HRs to date this year and I'll bet he trumps that in his first 15 home games with the MFYs. Don't know much about the pitchers. Ichiro, like Dempster, is signed just through this season so this is strictly a 60 game rental for the Yanx.
  10. 1) You've been complaining about Carpenter for years around here. I didn't say there was anything wrong with that but let's not pretend it hasn't been the case. 2) That his name was brought up today (by you) merely made me wonder what & where he had worked before seeing as how the Nats have only been in existence for a few years and he seemed like the type who's been around a while. That made me notice the NYM reference. 3) If you don't want to do KTEs then DON'T DO THEM! Nothing around here is mandatory. 4) I'm not the arbiter of KTEs, I just am keeping the chart based on what folks said they wanted to do at the beginning of the year.
  11. So, inspired by bmfc's (now standard) rant about Nationals' broadcaster Bob Carpenter -- "Bob Carpenter might be the worst TV play-by-play guy in baseball and that includes Ken Harrelson." -- I did some looking about him just to see what else he had done prior to landing in Washington. And what I discovered was that in both Wikipedia and on the Nats 'MASN' page, it mentions that, among his various other jobs, he worked for the Mets sometime in the 1980s or '90s. I have no memory of this (not that I'm the best measure of these things) but neither apparently does UMDB. Anybody else care to weigh in?
  12. OK, that's going to make things interesting. One thing to consider is that one of the stipulations of the last CBA is that teams can NOT get draft picks next year for losing a player they trade for in mid-season, meaning that these kinds of deals aren't quite as valuable as they used to be. But seeing as how Dempster is in the midst of the best season of his career, it's a good gamble for the Braves and the position they're in right now even though he's a 35 y/o who's unsigned beyond this year and the reported player heading Chicago way, Randall Delgado, is 22 and promising. Now all the Braves have to avoid is (heh, heh) another collapse like last year.
  13. And is Delgado being included here for his Toronto-era comments about 'GBA' being installed as the 7th inning stretch song during the post-9/11 era and all the attached side issues there? Carlos might have meant a lot of things by his comments but I'm not sure anti-white was one of them.

  15. Also, is the implication that Delgado and LoDuco were the specific antagonists during that period or are they just being used as examples to set the era?

I tend to also - that's why I like to pick out a few events that I do know about just to keep my mind on the sport but off the local mess. Like: Miggy Cabrera hitting his 300th yesterday as part of the Detroit Tiger sweep of the Chicago Venturas which vaulted them into 1st place AL Central There were actually lots of sweeps this past weekend, including Boston losing three to Toronto and crashing back into last place.
  17. The A's didn't go with a rookie pitcher today (just the opposite actually - Bartolo Colon), and they didn't totally shut the Yanx down like the first three games (MFY jumped out to a 4-0 lead), but that didn't stop them from completing the four-game sweep!! They even flipped the tables on the Yanx by chipping away at the Yanx early lead with three runs against Sabathia including 2 HRs. After 6.2 IPs by Colon, three Oakland relievers held the Yanx scoreless on 3 hits over 5.1 IPs. Then a Seth Smith one-out HR in the 9th off Soriano tied it. Then a Coco Crisp two-out single in the 12th won it. Hey, if I'm going to be miserable over our sweep then I'm going to balance that by reveling in the agony of someone else's.

Either isn't THAT good and loading the bases is suspect, you can too easily end up behind in the count with no place to put him Andre Ethier is two skips, a hop, and a well-struck 4-iron ahead of Matt Treanor as a hitter not to mention that that move gets you to Righty/righty instead of Righty-v-lefty and sets up the all-around force. It was the right move, it simply didn't work. And then it was the 14 consecutive two-outs that followed which made it look even worse.
  20. Don't you just smell a four run inning coming right here?
  21. 15 hits and only 3 runs. I didn't have a problem with the SB attempt.
  22. So it's Valdy - Wright - then Ike against a pitcher making his ML debut: Josh (somebody take him over the) Wall
  23. The thing about the Nickeas bunt was that the play at 3rd was closer than the one at 1st
  24. Somebody on this team needs to get a ball out of the infield !!!!!!!!!
  25. I think we just got the make-up call at 1st
