  1. The next good throw that anyone in this outfield makes will be the first one this year.

Another St Johns alum, and one that the writers around this town were desperate for one of the locals to draft back in 2005 (as if they actually knew enough about any of the other candidates to make a legit comparison). This one is a real hail mary. Looks like he's only pitched a handful of innings since like 2008, most of it in the minors, and most of that lousy.
  3. Duda's official replacement is Harvey So today's shuffling sees Beato & Duda gone with Acosta & Harvey up and active for today. It's getting hard to tell the players around this team even with a scorecard. Maybe the fact that Harvey is up two days prior to his start means the Buffalo shuttle will be passenger free for a while. Or at least until Friday.
  4. It was a bazooki, from Suzuki
  5. It is high ... it is far ... it is ... oh, it's a grounder to 3rd I tell you Suzyn we just don't have the greatest vantage point from here in the Lowe's Home Improvement booth and ...

With the Mets' pen they should start serving beer in the 7th inning. If they had 'F-Troop Night' I'd be there quicker than Wrangler Jane could draw her gun.
  7. Ceetar wrote: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back Manny Acosta! shoot me now. I'll be at this one as well. Y'see, this is the problem with demanding that we throw everyone in the current pen off the deck ... THEN WHAT? Well, the answer to 'Then What?', especially after several of the youngsters (Edgin, E. Ramirez, Hefner) are already up, becomes something like -- Manny Acosta! And, FWIW, he's been pretty decent at Buffalo: 7 ER over 28 IP (2.25 ERA) with a WHiP of 1.00 even including just 4 BBs and 1 HR

The 1995 Griffey Jr/Randy Johnson/Edgar Martinez team which featured a crazy September run (winning 14 of 17 at one point) culminating in the one-game play-in win vs the Angels followed by the 1st round playoff comeback from 0-2 against the Yanx is the season that really woke up that franchise. That city had no idea what pennant race baseball was all about until they were suddenly immersed in it on a daily basis and suddenly discovered that baseball was a fun sport. That year was the drive that got them out of the horrid Kingdome ("like watching a game in a Price Club" was my friend's comment) and the one which gave them the status to sign Ichiro. He was a huge phenomenon no doubt, but they were already several years removed from being the invisible franchise by the time he got there. And to show up at the park only to see their hero suited up in the colors of the hated adversary had to have been a real kick in the gut on top of that. In some ways, yeah. Turns out he had asked to be traded and doing so to the team that is coming into town that very night is kind of weird. But, if I'm a Mariners' fan, I'm looking at it like this: he's 38, barely productive, and was gone in two months whether he was dealt or not, so if this helps out the bullpen over the next year or three then better now than later. The only thing this really crushes is the 'one and only one' franchise thing if it turns out that he never plays again, but of course that ignores the entire first half of his career thing and even Yanqui fans aren't going to think of him as a Yanqui once this is all over (until they claim him as one of "their" HoF players years from now and wonder why he's wearing a Seattle cap on his plaque).
  9. Wright - 4.0 Dickey 3.0 Davis - 1.0 Turner - 0.5 Tejada - 0.5 Torres - 0.5 Thole - 0.5
  10. I didn't realize that past references to Carpenter rants (see what I did there ... carpenter [r]ants?!?) only counted when they came via KTEs. In fact I didn't mention KTEs at all until you brought them up. But, you know what, I'm willing to drop this all right now. So I'll state out loud that I profusely apologize for ever inferring that were are an anti-Carpenter-ite ... and not just Bob either, we're talking also about pitcher Chris, the late singer Karen, plus Jesus of Nazareth since he was trained as a carpenter. I realize now that it's quite possible some of your best friends are Carpenters and that there's nothing worse than labeling someone a Carpenter bigot so I vow never to do so again. At this very moment Penn State is contemplating the removal of my statue from their campus over this issue and I can't say as how I blame them. And, furthermore, I resolve never to reference anything you say ever again as I see now that such actions are merely "vitriol" in disguise and "a shot" at someone's character.
  11. Single and SB in his first NYY AB Batting 8th.
  12. WTF did I say that's "not nice"? That you've bashed Bob Carpenter a bunch of times in the past? ... BFD! Shit, it's like saying that BagsMags has an anti-Willie Randolph streak that's approaching Ripken's record, but I bet if I brought that up to him he'd wear that title loud and proud. And I'll say it again since you seemed to have skipped over it the first time: I didn't have any problem with what you said, I merely noted that your reference to Carpenter, which you do at least once during virtually every Met/Wash series, served as a trigger for my curiosity to look up where he had been before. Honestly, you're looking at two harmless words in a parenthetical thought and are getting all bent out of shape over them and I have no freakin' idea why. And if you're simply pissed off that you "had to" do a KTE when you didn't want to then don't volunteer to do three Washington KTEs and then act like you're being brow-beat into them when they come around. I merely said that since you and Edgy were splitting the six Nats series and him taking your turn last time that I didn't know who wanted to do this one so you two should "work it out on your own". So if you felt somehow bullied into doing it then take it up with him. And if you changed your mind and don't want to do them anymore then simply say so. We concocted these things for shits and giggles not because we actually think we're going to lose the series without them.
  13. Young - 3.1 Wright - 1.3 Davis - 1.3 Murphy - 1.3 Edgin - 0.3 Rauch - 0.15 Parnell - 0.3 ERamirez - 0.15 Byrdak - 0.1

Now if he hung around for two more years and got his 3,000th MLB hit with them ... well then that's a different story! That the first 2,500 came elsewhere would conveniently be ignored. Exactly what I was thinking. He should definitely a Yanqui cap when he goes into the Hall of Fame though. You're not really a HoF-er if you don't.
  15. The other problem is figuring out who's a good reliever. Y'know who were reasonably good relievers last year? Pedro Beato, Ramon Ramirez, Frank Francisco, and Manny Acosta
  16. metsguyinmichigan wrote: Just awful. Starting think some of this is on Sandy. Other teams are trading for relievers. We knew this pen was horrible. It makes no sense to fall out of contention THEN make a deal. He should have brought someone in when they still had a chance. Realistically, what are you willing to give up for "good" relievers in mid-season when who the hell knows if the guy who was good last month will be good next month too?
  17. Losint back to back extra inning games by a combined 25 runs is a tough thing to do. Not for this team though. And special credit needs to be given to the middle of the order who, when presented with a chance to win the game outright without having ANY reliever throw a pitch, failed once again to get a ball to leave the infield.
  18. Every night it's just a different reliever's turn to suck.
  19. This team just leaves itself no room for error. Two of their three (so far) runs were preventable via balls that hit guys right in the glove.
  20. HOW MANY FUCKING TIMES HAVE WE FUCKED ONE OF THESE PLAYS UP THIS FUCKING YEAR??!?!?!!?????
  21. Every time Bay comes it seems like I see good stats flashed up on the screen against that particular pitcher. Then I remember that those numbers were from at least one Jason Bay lifetime ago and therefore that history no longer apply to the pod version of Jason Bay that we acquired three years back.
  22. Hey Davey, how'd the last lefty/lefty match-up against Ike work out?
  23. Thank the almighty for the GiDP. Lately whenever I see a cheesy single I automatically assume that something bad is going to follow it. And tonight, three of the Nats' hit haven't left the infield.

  25. Marlins leading Braves 2-0 in the 9th - and continuing their recent trend of seemingly using everyone except Heath Bell to try and close it out.
