    The 5-1/3 scoreless (3 hits) innings in relief over two games vs Philly in the NLDS The return from the hip issue that seemed to cure his wildness (particularly high/arm-side) and led him to a 2025 All-Star nod and a 15-5 record with a low 3's ERA from the beginning of '24 thru mid-'25 ... and then it all fell apart with seemingly no cause or explanation.

    So with just nine days to go until the calendar turns to July, the Lindor/Soto in the same lineup total still has yet to hit double digits.

    With Mauricio up and Baty losing first dibs at 3B there's no reason to take Ewing out of CF ... not that there was reason anyway.

    Right now the Cubs have so many of their own pitchers on the IL that they're in need of Anyone, and I assume that's what triggered this deal. Peterson, who will turn 31 before the season is out, is going to be a FA at the end of the year and the combo of the age and a lousy season makes it unlikely that the Mets would try to sign him anyway. So maybe the Cubs' short term desperation enticed them to offer a better prospect than a guy in his Peterson's would normally command prompting Stearns to strike while the offer was on the table even as it puts the Mets short by one more arm themselves.

    Cole Mathis, 2024 2nd round draft pick out of College of Charleston (I think that's in Charleston), turns 23 y/o in a few weeks. 6' 2" / 210, R/R, listed in BB-Ref as 1B/DH/P though has played some 3B too. Hasn't pitched at all since turning pro so I suspect that's in his rearview. Only played 29 games in 2025 (not sure why) plus some AZ fall league action. Has split '26 between low and high A with combined stats of: .272/.396/..585 so, yeah, that's a lot of slug and a lot of walks. But again it's only 39 G/192 PAs so you'd like to know the story behind all that so if anyone is passing through South Bend, where he's currently plying his trade, drop by a game, snoop around a bit, and let us know what you find. https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=mathis000col

    Torrens for Baty is interesting, but Luis does tend to make contact and he can't hit into a GiDP ... and he takes a walk.

    I was just about to type 'and yet again another inning with two runners on despite nothing even resembling hard contact' when an inning-ending GiDP occurs.

    And yet another multi-run inning, this one on a bloop double followed by a misjudged fly and a non-turned DP

    In the previous eight games [CIN x 3, PHI x 3, CHC x 2, so not including this ongoing contest] the Mets have given up runs in 24 different innings. 8 of those were one run innings (not surprisingly, these all came in the two NYM wins). In the other 15 innings where the opposition scored they scored at least twice for a total of 60 runs. There were five 2 run innings, five 3 run innings, two 4 run innings, also one 5-spot, one 6-spot, and an eight run frame.

    It's gotten to the point where they can never make just ONE mistake, but instead wind up making two or three in a row. As a result there have been very few one run innings against and a while lotta crooked numbers. And here the Cubs have three in, have knocked out the pitcher, still have no one out, and haven't hit a ball solidly all inning.

    Nice shot by Ewing, btw, and he also drove two to the warning track in the early game. Just hope these aren't signs of him getting too HR happy.

    Two HRs/three RBIs in one inning!! The Mets haven't lost a game where that happened since .... ummm, shortly after lunchtime
