  1. Nats beat Braves reducing their magic number to 2 - which considering they play each other for the next two games, the number is essentially one. That's 7 losses in 8 games for Atlanta - which especially isn't good when a 3-game series w/Texas is included in that stretch. Only down note for the Nats is that Rafael Soriano still ain't right. Brought in to protect a 4 run lead he gave up 2 doubles and a walk before being pulled w/2 outs in favor of Storen who gave up a 2nd run but closed out the game with the tying runs on.
  2. Well that certainly sucked. For the record (like this place is a record or anything) I would have left Edgin in. He got the one righty out, why not another? I know the hit off Mejia was a bloopy P.O.S. which doesn't 'prove' it was the wrong move, I just thought it was an unnecessary one. And can someone explain to me how the Yanx/Rays have taken 3:20 (and counting) to play 8-1/2 innings of a scoreless tie ? What the hell have they been doing for the last 200 minutes? Only 10 hits and 5 walks [u:2cigfboq]combined[/u:2cigfboq]!! oe: Rays win, Rays win on a bases-loaded single in the bottom 9th. 3:30 for a 1-0 games with 11 hits total.
  3. Can I help you with something Mr. Ozuna? No, just looking (3x)
  4. I'll say this for Flores, his throws from SS are very true. He may not have the strongest arm in the world but he gets them over there and they're almost always straight as a string.
  5. Steven Matz had a very nice set of legs behind him during his interview. Wifey Watch needs to get on that.
  6. Falcone Deshaies

A little memo to d'Arnaud, there. Why Kirk isn't starting is a thread unto itself.
  8. I tell ya you just can explain this game Suzyn. [Cosart singles]
  9. Edgy MD wrote: YEAAAAAAAA. Ks first 6 batters! Didn't hear for sure but the MLB record might be 8. I remember Pete Falcone once whiffing the first eight. Nope, six. It's the NYM record from the start of the game. Seaver, of course, has the overall consecutive record of ten, and it had to stop there because the game was over. From the start of the game eight is the ML record: Jim Deshaises - Houston 1986 ... and that was the guy the 'stros didn't want to pitch against us.
  10. The odd thing about that incident is that Ump Joe West took offense at it (even though it was clearly NOT directed at him) and both threw Papelbon out of a game he was clearly not coming back to anyway (seeing as how he had already coughed up 4 runs trying to protect a 3 run lead) and then physically restrained him when he came back on the field to argue about it. Both parties offered up lame excuses in the immediate aftermath. Papelbon played the 'I was merely adjusting myself' card, while West says he was trying to get back out to his position for the next half inning and that Papelbon was blocking him from doing so, which I guess means the only remaining choice was to grab the reliever by the shirt and shove him aside. I think both may be a bit lighter in the wallet by the time the dust settles on this one.

Who will take up the banner to represent all that is Yankees about the Yankees? Gardner? Tanaka? I imagine Yankee fans aren't feeling it. There's a feeling out there that MLB has spent so long proclaiming Jeter the one pure lamb in a forest of evil wolves that the whole sport is primed for a post-Jeter letdown. I'm not ready to buy it, but... The national media is certainly buying it. They already think that baseball is virtually dead and that Jeter is its sole remaining attribute. From a strictly MFY POV, the dirty little secret in the Bronx is that they packed the house MUCH more in the ARod years then they ever did before or since. Only those "loser" teams from the first decade this century drew 4+ million (2005-2008 - a span which included ARod's two MVP years) far outdrawing those 'beloved' 1990s squads which averaged in the high-twos (96-98) to low threes beginning in '99. From ARod's arrival until his downfall they never drew under 3.7

That's about a 95% guaranteed loss that isn't showing up on the ledger yet. 95%, unless we should suddenly trade Mejia to the Indians ... amIrite folks!?
  13. - Oakland took 2 of 3 from Seattle to at least temporarily halt their lengthy slide towards one of the biggest collapses of all time. They also may be saved by having 7 remaining games w/Texas - Tigers swept Cleveland virtually killing any chances for the seriously, I just used a racist word when I really meant "Guardians" - KC's gotta be kicking themselves for losing 3 of 4 to Boston AL Central: Detroit +1.5 over KC. One remaining series between the two WC: OAK +1.5 KC -- SEA -1.0 TOR -4.0 CLE -5.0 MFY -5.0
  14. Yanx go up by one in the top of the 9th via a McAnn HR - but then 3 doubles off Robertson in the bottom half equals a walk-off win for the O's and a 3-of-4 win in the series.
  15. So Jeter is now 0 for his last 24 ABs (and 5 for September) How cool would it be if this streak continued for all or most of his remaining games?
  16. It was October 1968, and the country was fighting in Vietnam and had already lived through the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. that year. Protests were boiling over in the streets at home, and the Detroit Tigers were hosting the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. Jose Feliciano was a 23-year-old blind folk singer from Puerto Rico who had scored a hit on the U.S. charts with a cover of The Doors' "Light My Fire," and Tigers radio legend Ernie Harwell invited him to sing the national anthem at Tiger Stadium prior to Game 5. Feliciano was accompanied in left field by his acoustic guitar and his guide dog, Trudy, and he launched into an emotional, heartfelt, and, well, different version of "The Star-Spangled Banner." He strummed the guitar in a slightly syncopated, Latin-influenced rhythm, careened back and forth from the traditional vocal melody to something more adventurous, and offered the finishing flourish of "Yeah, yeah." It was bold and innovative and fresh, but it was also many years ahead of its time. Feliciano was booed heartily by the crowd and caused a public uproar that took years to live down. "Back then, when the anthem was done at ballgames, people couldn't wait for it to be over," Feliciano told The Guardian last month. "And I wanted to make them sit up and take notice and respect the song. I was shocked when I was booed. I felt, 'God, what have I done wrong?' All I was trying to do was create a soulful rendition. I never in my wildest dreams thought I was going to have the country against me, radio stations stop playing me. "But in part, it was good -- because I ended up meeting my wife. She couldn't understand the injustice and started a fan club, even though we'd never met. We fell in love and the rest is history." On Oct. 14, 2012, prior to Game 1 of the National League Championship Series at AT&T Park in San Francisco, the same stylized, heartfelt version of the national anthem was performed by Feliciano on his acoustic guitar. This time the crowd roared. Baseball and the Anthem
  17. Niese being late in covering 1st and later Wilmer not holding onto the ball in the rundown (at least that was a physical mistake and not a mental one) cost two runs. The infield actually executed two run-down plays quite nicely today and we even got an out via a come-backer (for like the 2nd or 3rd time this season). Other than that, that they hit HRs and we don't 'bout sums things up.
  18. Whoever had Wilmer Flores in the first to hit a triple pool please come up to collect your winnings. Oh wait, that was none of you. WF has also has another hit, a diving catch, and went 1st to 3rd on a single.
  19. Yeah, I caught an inning or two of him last night. Sounds like a natural.
  20. In Saturday night's SFG/LAD game, Brett Bochy, pitching in relief for the Giants, gave up a HR to Scott Van Slyke which drove in Dee Gordon It was Bochy's ML debut and, I believe, he became the first pitcher to be handed the ball by his father/manager

  22. smg58 wrote: I haven't been following the posts here so much since school started so sorry if this has been discussed, but when is Niewenhuis going to get another start? I would have thought that an .859 OPS would get noticed on this team. My guess is that Nieuwenhuis gets the start today. I don't think it's any more complicated than, with den Dekker banged up a bit, Young was given a rare start (he had had five since the end of July). He responded with a 3 hit night and so was given another; he then got 2 more and with an LHP going was given another; got 2 more and was given a 4th.
  23. I'd give the old 'check up from the neck up' to everyone who played in Saturday's game.
  24. It seems like no matter whether the Yanx win or lose they remain right about at 5 games out of a WC spot. They were 4 out when I started this thread and, after a week and a half totally indifferent play they're now 5 out, a fact which I guess gets chalked up to the other WC contenders have been mostly indifferent as well. The good news, of course, is that 10 days have been wiped off the schedule as they've been running in place. - LAA have now won ten straight and have gone from trailing by 6 games in late July to now leading their division by the biggest gap in baseball at 11.0 games.
  25. Lagares - 1.5 Granderson - 1.3 Flores - 1.5 Edgin - 0.2
