  1. In the big picture this game doesn't mean much. But after Saturday's mess--one which is destined to be 'Exhibit A' in the 'Worst Baseball Games Ever' category (15 hits allowed, 4 errors plus about 5 more mistakes/goofs and just plain fuck-ups, walks, HBPs, high pitch-counts, bad weather, slow pace, yadda, yadda]--a win today means a split in this series against what is probably the league's best team. So at least give it a good try, OK boys?
  2. When was the last runner d'Arnaud threw out? Has there been one?
  3. How often do you suppose NYM pitchers have turned come-backers to the mound into outs this season? 20% of the time, maybe 30%? It was the one fucking time this week that they kept Rendon in the infield and they still don't get an out of it.
  4. This game is simply absurd. Wheeler's needed more than twice as many pitches to get through 3 innings as compared to Fister (and the 4th isn't going any better). On top of that, virtually everything the Nats have hit, including most of their outs and foul balls, have been hard while NYM bats have one single plus a bunch of soft grounders and easy FOs. If this game ever does end it's going to be about 4 hours from now and the score isn't going to be pretty.
  5. Matsuzaka - 1.2 Goeddel - 0.8 Alvarez - 0.1 Germen - 0.4 Recker - 1.8 Young - 1.2 Duda - 0.5 Herrera - 0.5
  6. Gee - 1.2 Torres - 1.4 Familia - 0.8 Mejia - 0.8 d'Arnaud - 2.0 Lagares - 1.5 EYoung - 1.5 Duda - 0.6 Herrera - 0.2
  7. So about 5 PM this afternoon the Yanx looked to be on the verge of their 2nd straight late-inning win, both of them courtesy of a Chris Young HR. But now some five hours and 9-1/2 innings of ball later, theyre headed back to their Baltimore hotel after getting swept, scoring just 2 runs in 20 innings, and find themselves losing two full games to the Os (although the division boat had sailed a while ago). But on top of that, they also lose a half game each to Cleveland, Toronto, and KC, plus 1-1/2 games to Detroit. Theyll also concede 1/2 game to the loser and 1-1/2 to the winner of the Oakland/Seattle tilt just getting started. Aaaaaah, life is good tonight.
  8. Eh, we've got Mejia in against the top of their order ... we don't need any insurance runs.

  10. Desmond's been out at both bases he's stood on this inning.
  11. Gee has faced 17 hitters so far tonight and has retired 8 of them. He's lucky to have only allowed two runs to this point.
  12. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: And Lucky-ass Duda makes three. Lucky, yes, but the feet-first slide does have its advantages every now and then. Maybe Los Mets can beat the Nationals cuz god knows The Mets can't.
  13. I think that's a bit far-fetched. The AAA season just ended a few days ago and this type of bring up the minor league managers as a reward or just as a taste is not exactly unknown across MLB.
  14. Aaaaaannnnnnd Chris Young HRs again Now 8/16 as a Yank w/6 XBHs
  15. On to the 11th Brandon McCarthy is another one of those short-term MFY projects that immediately improve out of nowhere upon landing in the Bronx 7 innings of 4-hit ball today just improved upon his sub-3.00 ERA (4.00+ over eight seasons w/4 teams elsewhere) as his H/9, WHiP, K-rate, BB-rate, and HR-rate have all improved.

I am though wary of the idea that he's the favorite simply because of being an '86er -- not necessarily the holy grail on this board but is among at least a certain pct of NYM fans who have convinced themselves that only an '86 hero can succeed here (Keith becomes the hitting coach and Ronnie the PC under this scenario). Also, if there are those who's objection to Terry is excessive bunting (even though I think it's been shown that he calls for them less often than the norm) or that he's over-using the young arms (rumored to be mgmt's objection) I suspect that one or both of those would get worse not better in the small-ball/tough-guy Wally-world.

Lefty Specialist wrote: It's the 'Aaron Small Syndrome', where players who previously sucked or had no real career to speak of don the pinstripes and hit or pitch like Reggie Jackson or Whitey Ford. They inevitably regress to the mean, but they have a brief period of POOTA (Playing Out Of Their Ass), which is highly irritating and highly helpful to the Yankees. Lyle Overbay and Alfonso Soriano are two other recent examples of this phenomenon. Glenallen Hill is the one I remember. Acquired by the Yanx in late July 2000 for two nobodies, GAH, at the age of 35, went on to hit .333 in 132 ABs (.262 prior to the trade) with 16 HRs (a rate of nearly 70 HRs for a full season). Dumped during spring training the following March, the remainder of Hill's career consisted of 9 hits w/1 HR
  18. I heard that Roger Goodell suspended Fiers for just two games after the incident saying that while he saw the result of Stanton being carted off the field he was unable to secure the video of the actual pitch and therefore couldn't be sure how Stanton came to be on the ground. What ... too soon?!?
  19. And just in time for the Yanx four-game series w/the O's. One thing about this series is that you know Buck isn't about to take his foot off the pedal until the O's clinch, and against the Yanx maybe even not then. Davis was also in contention for most RBIs in a season w/a sub-.200 BA (or something like that) but this might blow that chase too. Several other match ups to follow in the AL this weekend: - Cleveland at Detroit - Oakland at Seattle The A's could be out of the playoff picture and in 3rd place in the AL West as early as tomorrow. Considering both the size of their lead and the buffer that the dual WC system gave them, this has the makings of an historic collapse.
  20. Pitching like shit? - Check Hitting like shit? - Check Fielding like shit? = Check And now Eric Young add running the bases like shit onto the pile. Actually, d'Arnaud already broke that cherry earlier tonight. On the plus side, the Yanx are getting no-hit thru 7

  22. Considering we may not score six runs this series (hell, we only scored 7 vs the Rox in 3 games) this one isn't looking too good.
  23. Well, so far we're trailing in runs 4-0, in hits 6-2, and in XBH 2-1. But we are leading in mistakes 3-0 so there is that.
  24. 12 hits by LRoche off the Mets this year -- 10 of them for extra bases.
  25. The Nats pretty much clinched the division and ridded themselves of some demons by taking 2 of 3 this week from Atlanta. They've been the better team all year long (Nats = +106 RS/RA, Braves = +8) but were 4-9 against the Atlantas prior to this recent series and had at least the remnants of a lingering inferiority complex over it. Rafael Soriano has been demoted as closer. Drew Storen filling in has racked up three straight saves (twice in one-run games, once in a two-run) and turned in 1-2-3 innings in all of them w/6 K's total Soriano was allowed back on the mound yesterday in the 8th inning but only because the Nats were already up 6-1. He gave up a double, a single, and a SB and got out of the inning unscored-upon only with a line-out w/runners on 2nd & 3rd With this being a four-game series, we'll see all their starters except for Strasburg
