  2. The Astros are having themselves a bit of fun playing spoiler out west. They just took two of three from Seattle, which follows on the heels of them taking two of three from Oakland and before that two straight from Anaheim. Be nice if we could do the same with Washington (7 games), Miami (3) & Atlanta (3) coming up. Oakland lost again to the ChiSox shaving their WC #1 lead down to 1.5 games over Seattle and just 2.0 games ahead of Detroit. After that comes being out of it altogether. Funny how their deadline moves for Samardzija & Lester were seen as purely October-based trades since their hold on the division and/or WC spots were a virtual lock. Now 15-23 since July 31 Royals salvaged the final game from Tigers to move head by a game in the Central battle.
  3. Eric Young: Hittin' machine.
  4. Dario Alvarez will now at least HAVE rate stats on his sheet as he records his first ever out as an ML pitcher.
  5. Not changing the rule just clearing it up a bit - or something along those lines. Major League Baseball issued an illustrated memorandum to all teams Tuesday in an attempt to clear up any potential confusion about the rules governing collisions at home plate. The key point, according to managers who saw the letter, is that common sense must prevail. Specifically, even though catchers are required by the letter of Rule 7.13 to allow a part of the plate to slide to, a runner who is clearly beaten by the throw should not be called safe on a technicality. ESPN.com reported that the letter instructs umpires not to call a runner safe if there is no evidence that the catcher has "hindered or impeded" the runner's path to the plate. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/93914144/mlb-clarifies-home-plate-collision-rule Supposedly this "new" version of the rule dicked the Yanquis last night, although I didn't see what happened there specifically.
  6. Colon - 2.5 Wright - 1.5 Herrera - 1.0 d'Arnaud - 1.5 Granderson - 1.5 Flores - 1.0 Duda - 1.0
  7. deGrom - 5.3 Edgin - 0.75 Familia - 0.75 Granderson - 0.8 Lagares - 0.8 den Dekker - 0.8 d'Arnaud - 0.8
  8. Edgy MD wrote: And Miami takes another chunk out of Milwaukee. That game was tied heading into the 9th when Frankie Rodriguez came in and, after getting the first two outs (Yelich and Solano), went: Walk, SB, HR, HR (Stanton, McGehee & Ozuna). Bad, Frankie, bad. Brews got two on in the bottom half off Cishek but couldn't cash any in. That's now 1-13 over the last two weeks for the Brews and just 3 games over .500

  10. btw, Mets now = 5.5 games out of playoffs -- Yanx = 5.5 games out of playoffs This comes two days after there was no obvious article on the Met game in the Daily News on-line edition. Only after clicking on to general purpose article about speculation for next year was there an 'oh yeah, and they won last night' link to a game summary. Today they at least slipped deGrom's performance last night into a shared headline with the Wright news. I mean I know they've essentially marketed themselves as the MFY pr house organ but maybe keeping the ratio of articles down below about 6-1 might not be a bad idea with the two local teams about even in their chances these days.
  11. Even if there's suspicion of something more serious, though, I see no reason to not keep him active, even if he doesn't appear again. Well, I guess technically he's not INactive as in on the DL or anything. 'Shut down' in this case is more akin to not intending to play him as opposed to can't. BUT ... "doctors told [Wright] it is likely he can avoid surgery and he is confident he can return to his usual form next season ... but doctors emphasized that playing further could risk structural damage to the shoulder." http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/jacob-degrom-sensational-david-wright-season-mets-shut-rockies-2-0-article-1.1934222#ixzz3CufJNNYP
  12. Tigers re-tie the AL Central by taking the first two games in this series from KC. Odd ending tonight. KC, down by 2 in the 9th, gets the first two hitters on against Joe Nathan (two infield singles) then, after one out, send in a pinch-runner for the guy on 2nd which is a bit odd in that he's not the tying run. Then he's running on the pitch (why? ... I don't know) - and in the process gets picked off!! Nathan then strikes out the next batter to end the game. Weird strategy by KC Elsewhere: Yanx lose (and there was much rejoicing), Jays win, Indians lose, A's up 5-2 in the 8th vs the ChiSox, Mariners just under way
  13. Ben Grimm from another thread wrote: One of my pet peeves is how "closers" don't get removed from a game until after they've blown a save Fortunately, it did happen tonight.
  14. Sept 9, 9:54 pm: David Wright will not play for the remainder of the 2014 season, the team announced late Tuesday. He will, instead, rest to abate the inflammation in the rotator cuff, and then begin a rehabilitation program to strengthen the entire shoulder, the statement said. Wright was seen today by doctors at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan on Tuesday. He underwent an MRI, which showed persistent inflammation in the rotator cuff in the left shoulder. Wright may undergo additional testing later this week.

  16. If Familia can hold onto this one Edgin just may wind up setting a CPF Schaefer PotG record for most beer per pitch thrown.

  20. Two infield hits thus far. Not what you want to see against a Colorado pitching staff on the road.
  21. Moving from 11th place to fourth place and now to first place in the span of three years, the Mets have overtaken the Astros to record the highest organizational winning percentage in baseball, considering the performance domestic minor league clubs only. Houston had finished at the top of the heap in both 2012 and 2013. All seven of the Mets affiliates finished at .500 or better, headed by low Class A Savannah (.625) and footed by Rookie-level Kingsport (.500). Despite the organizations overall success, just three of its farm clubs qualified for the playoffs, and among those qualifiers, both Savannah and Triple-A Las Vegas (.563) made first-round exits. Only Double-A Binghamton (.585) remains, and the they will play for the Eastern League championship this week. http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/2014-organization-standings/
  22. Niese - 3.5 Carlyle - 0.2 Torres - 0.6 Granderson - 1.3 d'Arnaud - 1.3 Wright - 1.3 Duda - 0.7 Lagares - 0.6 Flores - 0.5
  23. deGrom - 3.1 Torres - 0.3 Mejia - 0.7 Nieuwenhuis - 2.0 den Dekker - 1.2 Lagares - 0.7 Duda - 0.5 d'Arnaud - 1.0 Tejada - 0.5
  24. d'Arnaud as a hitter is starting to remind me a bit of Washington's Anthony Rendon -- and that's a really good thing. He's not as good as Rendon at the moment (and is older and quite possibly never will be as good) but the two are similar sized, use the field virtually line to line, and both have better power than they look like they ought to. Or maybe it's just the dark hair and I don't know what I'm talking about. Either conclusion is equally possible.
  25. Surprised they sent Grandy ... awful throw. A single-less win!!
