  1. The misery will continue for Reds fans. He is a horrible manager.

    Best Day

Luis Castillo: On August 5th, the Mets were the Sunday Night Game of the Week as Tom Glavine attempted to get his 300th win. The team lost a bad game the previous day against the Cubs and were trying to get the win to avoid having Glavine's attempt at baseball history hanging over their collective head for another five days. Luis Castillo was a mere 4 for 20 in his first days as a Met and some fans were grumbling as Castillo was popping up time after time (a preview of Jose Reyes' September). Before the biggest audience in ESPN history for a Sunday night game, Castillo showed why Minaya traded for him. Castillo went 4 for 5, including a double, a steal, and two runs scored. His fielding was eye opening in support of Glavine and Mets. Final score, Mets 8 Cubs 3. On deck: Ramon "Bucket Head" Castro.

    NLCS IGT

If Marlon was guilty, so was Upton. If my biased memory serves correct, Marlon raised his arms while crossing the bag. It appeared that Upton raised his afterwards. Either way, the application of the rule seems to be that you can't raise your arms too high while sliding if a fielder is at or near the bag. It seems like you can slide a foot to either side of the bag but you can't raise your arm(s).
  4. Too late--the Mets released Ledee today, according to [u:dc63077f49]Baseball America[/u:dc63077f49]. (I'm sure that Omar is getting ready to re-sign him next summer). http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/?p=620
  5. SI Metman--your work on this, year after year, is indispensable. The Mets are always one of the last teams to release their schedule so I really appreciate this effort. You should be given a Nobel Prize.
  6. After a record-setting collapse which saw the stunned New York Mets squander a seven-game lead with only 17 games left to play in the season and allowed themselves to be eliminated from the playoffs by a single game, manager Willie Randolph vowed that the Mets would in fact win "one more game" in 2008. "Our problem was clearly that we won only 88 games while the Phillies won 89," said the visibly agitated Randolph moments after a season-ending 7-1 loss to the lowly Florida Marlins. "Next year, we'll just win 89 games, not 88, which is not enough wins. Or maybe we will win one of our games against the Phillies, ideally at Shea, in September, when we have a six-and-a-half game lead. Instead of getting swept. That way we'd just barely win the division outright. Yes. Yes. That's what we'll do. That's exactly what we'll do." When asked to comment on his manager's decision, third baseman David Wright remained crouched in a corner, rocking back and forth and humming tunelessly to himself.
  7. This is a tough one. These comments are mostly irrelevant to baseball and probably, you... Pro-Indians/Anti-Boston: The Indians beat the MFYs more contemporaneously than the Red Sox. From Cleveland: Eric Carmen and The Raspberries. The Indians have gone without longer than the Red Sox. Red Sox fans have gone from "lovable losers" to smug. After Pedro was shelled in Boston in '06, Theo Epstein said something like "Computers 1, Humans 0" to show how smart he was for not re-signing Pedro. That was obnoxious. I have nothing anti-Cleveland. Pro Boston: Boy would it piss off Yankees fans! It might make Suzyn Waldman cry! Youkilis is one of my favorite non-Mets. My son is in school in Cambridge. A Red Sox WS might be fun for him (don't worry--he's a loyal Mets fan).
  8. "Goodness, gracious", Suzyn Waldman cried during the post-game show! http://binny13.googlepages.com/greatmomentinbroadcasting1.mp3

  10. "Some Vitamin D from the Milk Man!" ARGH! I wish you were kidding. Neil Best, in [u:0a4abae4e3]Newsday[/u:0a4abae4e3], called Chip Carey a "mostly reliable pro." No, he is only a horrible announcer... and he's doing the NLCS, too!
  11. Below are the current standings with surviving picks in parentheses. Second round scoring is 10 for the winner and 5 bonus points if you also get the right number of games. WS scoring is 20 and 10. 1. BMFC1 25 (Col 7, Cle 6) METS MARATHON 25 (Bos 6) 3. ELSTER88 20 (Col 6, Bos 7) G-FAFIF 20 (AZ 6, Cle 5) VLADIUS 20 (Cle 6) YANCY STREET GANG 20 (Col 6, Cle 5) 7. 12. I'm surprised to find that the TBS Hot Corner, available from mlb.com, is a worthwhile supplement to the TV. If the Mets were playing, it would be unnecessary and distracting but not so with the MFYs playing. There are four screens, two are from cameras used in the telecast, one has the score and pitch anaimation, and the fourth has the online studio crew (one of which is a woman with long legs).
  13. The play-by-play guy is Chip Carey who is horrendous. Former Braves announcer, son of moron Skip Carey. Chip knows little about the game, spews cliches and thinks that he's so clever.
  14. This isn't funny. Not because they are supposed to be making fun of the Mets--Letterman had some funny Mets jokes this week--but because it just isn't funny. http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/#mea=164347
  15. I left my consensus sheet "elsewhere" so I won't have standings until Tuesday. Sorry.
  16. Verducci wrote SI's articles that accompanied the excerpts from Game of Shadows. He's never been shy about saying that Bonds cheated. He can do better than the stupid YS comment. (Perhaps the Yankees should play all 162 games at home to truly honor YS. Perhaps they should receive a bye into the '08 playoffs so that they will have more home games.)
  17. I am neither devastated or disappointed that Glavine has declined his option.
  18. Any telecast with a Carey involved is a lousy telecast.
  19. Since the window is closed, here is a summary of the picks of the 15 participants: DS: COL 9, PHI 6 CHI 9, AZ 6 CLE 12, NYY 3 BOS 11, LAA 4 NL CHAMP: CHI 7 COL 4 AZ 2 PHI 2 AL CHAMP: CLE 8 BOS 6 LAA 1 WORLD CHAMP: CLE 7 BOS 4 COL 2 CHI 1 LAA 1 (which breaks down to AL 12 NL 3)
  20. Join the fun! This means you, Edgy and Vlad! We have 13 so far, including two that missed some of the information.
  21. A reminder that the deadline for this exciting contest is first pitch this afternoon.

  23. Pick the winner of each round and the number of games. Division Series: 5 points if you get the right team and a bonus 5 points if you also get the right number of games. Championship Series: 10 points with a 5 points bonus. WS round: 20 points with a 10 points bonus. You don't get the bonus points unless you've picked the right team. I'll keep track and announce the results after each round is over. Maybe this will give some of us a reason to give a darn! Division Series: A. Rockies v. Phillies: B. Cubs v. Diamondbacks: C. 24. Bill Simmons revised his Levels of Losing to include you know what. It's the 2d most painful in his tier: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/071001
