Good article in The Times on the history of Mets-MFY games (also reminding us what an ass George Steinbrenner was): http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/03/sports/baseball/yankees-and-mets-resuming-rivalry-in-florida.html?_r=1&ref=baseball And there's another in the WSJ: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304023504577320120714793382.html?mod=WSJ_NY_Sports_LEFT_LEADNewsCollection#articleTabs%3Darticle
Ceetar correctly said: "Supposedly you can hit a day and a night game in the same day if you want. constant baseball" Yes, that's true on the "other side" of Florida and in AZ, not so where the Mets are unless the Marlins or Cardinals have a night game while the Mets have a day game (and there are very few night games). Some office friends who are Yankee fans (sigh) went to see their team play a day game and then went to see the Jays that same night. I would think that if the Mets were in an area with more teams, their attendance would rise because of fans from other teams doing that same thing.
I could care less about the night life at PSL. Good line Ceetar: "PSL might as well be NYC compared to those places in terms of stuff to do." It's not supposed to be Vegas. They need to have a greater variety of opponents, especially more non-NL East opponents, and shorter travel times.
The Nationals maybe moving to the old Red Sox camp in Ft. Meyers. That would be another team leaving the east coast of Florida. The Wilpons went "all in" for PSL but nobody followed, the Orioles and Dodgers left, and now they are part of a lonely group of teams (Astros, Marlins, Cardinals). "Guys!" said that the Mets are trying to get an AL team to share their facility but with so few teams in the area, I wonder if this will happen.
Fman99 wrote: I watched the game... progress on CBS gameday ticker. Not the same. Fuck Bud Selig in his tele-hole. Verducci wrote a column citing all of the problems with opening in Japan including numbers which show that teams that play in these games start the season poorly. Nevertheless, Torre's boy said it was worth it because it sells the game. No Tom, it sucks. Today's game started at 2 AM for fans of those teams. How is that fair to them? How is the greater good of the game served by games starting so early? Bud should have listened to Mariners play-by-play guy Dave Sims--he is usually excitable but he (sitting in Seattle, calling the game from a monitor) sounded bored. The A's and M's now resume their exhibition season before really starting the season. Once again, Bud's "vision" for the game contradicts what is best for the fans of the teams but of course, we're irrelevant.
Ugh. Selig is friends with Fred Wilpon so he props him up with a loan and doesn't force him out. Selig isn't friends with McCourt so no loan which helped force him out. We still have Fred and no hope for the near future, while the Dodgers have new ownership, including smart guy Stan Kasten, and lots of new money to help the team.
Just the Mets: 1. Where they will finish in the NL East 2. What the final record will be 3. If you predict a wild card spot, say so 4. If you predict a playoff appearance, how far will they go? Last year's winner was Transmonk. Please don't be a J.J. Putz and predict "162-0" or "0-162".
Nicely done A Boy Named Seo. Almost as sad as how much Pelfrey stinks is the fact that the only backup starter is Batista. Given the fact that Johan isn't a sure thing, you wish that the Wilpons would have allowed Sandy to spend a some money on backup starters.
I hope that TransMonk's assessment is correct. If Josh Johnson is healthy, this could be a 1st place team. Gaby Sanchez had a bad 2d half (he's a superstar against the Mets) so we'll see which half was accurate; Giancarlo Stanton is great; we know how good the SS is; the 3B could implode if he has fielding problems at his new position; I like Bonafacio but I don't know if he's an everyday CF; the 'pen is weak after Heath Bell.
A decent team but I have them 4th. We'll see if the bullpen can be as good as last season after being used so often. SS is a big question; Larry Jones will undoubtedly miss some time moving the excellent Prado to 3B but creating a hole in the OF; not much pitching depth.
If they didn't have those three great starters, it would be hard to take them seriously as a contender. Their star 1B is out for at least a month; the 2B, SS and 3B are all over 30; the hot-headed closer could implode under the weight of the big contract and the scrutiny of the MFP fans; one OF spot is up in the air. I can see them winning because of Halladay, Lee and Hamels but I can also see (and hope for) a disappointing season.
I've seen more Nationals hats this year than ever before. Frigging front runners. I wonder see if they have enough hitting. They are weak at CF and we'll see if Zimmerman's back holds up. Werth is a key and we'll see if Morse can repeat his first successful season. They have a great manager, as we know. The bullpen is strong with an excellent closer (Storen) and set-up man (Clippard). And they have this guy:
Good news for New York baseball writers, one of their favorite MFY-mancrushes is back: Andy (PED) Pettitte is making a comeback. Look for Sherman, Lupica, Madden... well, all of them, to write loving, fawning, articles in the next few days.
