  1. I remember liking Outside Providence , calling your son "dildo" is a nice touch.
  2. sharpie wrote: . A bad film based on a bad book, there was none of the emotional resonance of the first picture. Exactly how I felt about both ,and don't even think about reading Hanibal Risisng.
  3. I liked "There Will Be Blood" a whole lot but it arguably wasn't even the best movie of 07 , I enjoyed " Michael Clayton " just as much. The performance of DDL would probably edge "There Will Be Blood" for me but " Michael Clayton" had excellent acting as well.
  4. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: This was pretty good, maybe I shoulda added Got it on your recommendation , was well worth it and very real for England at that time.
  5. Yeah another list , but I bet this one will surprise you and perhaps have you shaking your head. No Citizen Cane Times article. Take your seats for the top 100 films Another film list? The same old Citizen Kane? No this ones different, says The Timess chief film critic James Christopher You may be suffering from list exhaustion. There are so many about, and especially on film. But this one is different. Yes, of course wed say that. But having read endless Top 100 film lists, we felt short-changed. Sure, theyre definitive in their way, but they dont have many surprises. This one aims to be all-encompassing, certainly, and authoritative. But it is also intended to cause debate and maybe consternation. None of us myself, my fellow critics at The Times and my editor Tim Teeman realised how contentious this list would be to compile. We didnt want simply to rearrange the furniture as other lists do. Nor to kow-tow to monolithic critical masterpieces routinely crowned year on year. There are some spectacular casualties. Citizen Kane (1941) failed to cut the mustard. The genius of Orson Welles was not to be denied. But it was felt that his sour and seedy thriller Touch of Evil (1958) was not only equally audacious in terms of pure film-making, but also had greater resonance than Kane. Some omissions are too painful to talk about: Groundhog Day, The Servant, The Lives of Others, Psycho, The English Patient. (All my choices naturally.) Tastes vary dramatically, and you would be amazed how few critics will fall on their swords when it comes to such a fraught subject. That said, the list looks far fresher and younger than any of us dared hope. The number of recent releases vying for places near the summit is a surprise. I shall be horrified if anyone agrees with every one of our choices. The point of The Times Top 100 Films of All Time is to stimulate argument, and sharpen your own thoughts about the ingredients that make great movies. Now, if youd like to take your seats for the main presentation . . .
  6. This was deplorable , don't waste your money.
  7. Vic that was brilliant , thanks for that and for the reminder as to why I love this movie. I didn't grow up in the seventies but no matter because this movie works for any generation I think , not old enough for the seventies but old enough that I had records and old enough for when " Hot Press" was my bible. I'm going to rent " Almost Famous " for the holiday weekend , thanks again.
  8. Liked the movie a lot , liked how it ended , love the soundtrack.
  9. Saw it Saturday night , Daniel Day Lewis is riveting and Paul Dano is quite good as well , as much as the last scene gets talked about my favorite scene was when Eli Sunday humiliates Plainview in front of his church congregation , both actors were brilliant in that scene , DDL right there was worth the price for his exchange with Sunday. The final scene ties into this scene nicely. Glad I have the big screen TV , helps to appreciate the cinematography all the more and the score by the guy from Radiohead was brilliant.
  10. Family patriarch dies and as family and friends gather at his home for the funeral high jinks ensue in this dark Brit comedy. I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard during a movie , this is a riot.
  11. WOW , very cool.
  12. Sorry , I just refused to watch any movie with Renee Zellweger in it , I hate all those pouty faces she makes...very annoying.
  13. Is it fair to say that it's one of those movies that the critics love but the movie going public care little for?
  14. I suck , as usual. Not drafting your own team blows.
  15. I liked it when I first saw it, a bit of a cult classic I think now.
  16. WOW, what a movie, the ending was what exactly?, was Ed Tom Bell in reflecting on his life and dreams basically saying that he is ready to join his Dad in death and accepting that some evil will never be defeated? The scene with Barry Corbin is key to the whole thing I feel, or at least how I read it. What are your thoughts Ted? Vic have you seen this movie, thoughts.
  17. I enjoyed this movie up to and through the scene where Neville follows Sam into the dark building , thought that scene was intense, one thing, were the Zombies have a circle jerk right there? After that it was terrible, imagining NYC like that was probably the best part of the movie for me.
  18. Watched it yesterday, excellent movie with brilliant performances . I'll go with Vic's take on the horse scene.
  19. Weird, was talking about it yesterday while out for dinner , loved it and the soundtrack beat all. I didn't know that about the Coors girl or the U2 cover boy....interesting. Andrew Strong had an amazing voice, saw he had a Greatest Hits out when I was home a few years back....I thought ,really.
  20. I'm avoiding the Irish Voice and Irish Echo this week.
  21. Vagtastic has gotta be Seo.
  22. Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova will be preforming at the Academy Awards Sunday.
  23. Yet another movie me and the missus need to see, nanny is coming tomorrow so now we can catch up, Bardem is definitely her favorite actor. The Sea Inside is an excellent movie I saw of his.
