  1. I got to agree with Vic here, Alderson made some comment about there "being value in staying competitive the rest of the way", to whom?, value to whom I wonder? Alderson in a Q&A What is the value in making the most out of these last two months? I think theres a lot of value in, for example, making a run, even if its unrealistic. I think theres a lot of value in finishing well over .500. I think theres a lot of value in finishing over .500. I think that those things create a perception. What happened or didnt happen on the deadline may be largely forgotten if a team is able to create a positive impression the second half of the season. I thought we would talk on this call about the fact that we didnt add anything. And now were talking about why we didnt subtract. Which is interesting to me. But as I said, were about changing impressions, changing perceptions. And you do that with wins and losses, primarily. And I understand our fans are disappointed with whats happened the last three weeks or so. But its not the end of the season. There are a lot of impressions to be made over the remaining two months. And I happen to think that those impressions can be more valuable than a Low-A prospect below the top 30 from some organization in the American League. http://www.nj.com/mets/index.ssf/2012/07/mets_general_manager_sandy_ald_10.html
  2. I'm there too......this is supposed to be a strength of this FO , finding nuggets of gold among the trash. Or is that just a myth?

  6. Certainly got me.......this "doc" does look like he should be on the ballot.

Although there may not be enough time left in his career for him to catch up. Well, that probably has something to do about it. But we're way beyond the excuses part. The Mets are doing their due diligence. They're going to get play him regularly and give him a reasonable shot to actually hit he ball across a meaningful* sample. But he might not make it back to New York. You think the Mets will cut him?
  8. Thole says he can't wait to get out of arizona.
  9. the white sox traded for francisco liriano.
  10. This is cool Inside Matt Harvey's Mets debut By Cody Derespina Before the season began, the 2012 Minor League Baseball Analyst gave this description of then-Mets prospect Matt Harvey: Strong, athletic righty was the seventh pick in the '10 draft. He has a plus 92-95 mph FB that tops out at 98 with good life. He also throws a plus 82-84 mph SL, a CU, and a CB. He has worked hard to develop a more consistent release point and the command improved. Continued progress could mean top-of-the-rotation stuff. The Analyst pegged his potential as a No. 1 starter and gave him a 9D designation, meaning he had a 30 percent chance to become an elite player. Harvey's start against the Diamondbacks on Thursday did nothing to calm those expectations. Harvey struck out 11, gave up three hits and three walks in 5.1 scoreless innings. His fastball reached 98 mph three times and was still hitting 95 mph in the sixth inning. Here's the inning-by-inning breakdown of his average fastball velocity: 1 95.81 (11 thrown) 2 95.58 (12 thrown) 3 95.53 (15 thrown) 4 95.30 (13 thrown) 5 93.25 (8 thrown) 6 93.53 (13 thrown) He threw six different pitches according to MLB.com's pitch/FX data: Four-seam fastball: Harvey threw 72 of these, by far the most of any pitch on Thursday. Of the 44 strikes he threw with his fastball, 10 were called strikes, 13 were swinging strikes, 18 were foul balls and three came on balls in play. He struck out eight batters with the fastball, two looking. Only one batter managed to get a hit off the heater, Aaron Hill's line drive single with one out in the third. Two-seam fastball: Harvey threw two of these, one went for a ball and the other was lined for a double. Cutter: Just one cutter was thrown, an 89-mph pitch that Paul Goldschmidt pulled foul in the sixth. Harvey came back with a 91-mph fastball on the next pitch to strike Goldschmidt out. Slider: Harvey threw 23 sliders, 14 for strikes. Only two were put in playa fly out and a pop outand he struck out three batters with sliders, all swinging. Change-up: Harvey threw five change-ups, the only strikes were balls put in play: an infield hit in the first inning, a pop out and a ground out. After the game, manager Terry Collins said he'd like to see Harvey throw more change-ups in his next start. Curveball: Harvey threw three curves, two for strikes, both of which were called. http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/on-base-perception-1.3631854/inside-matt-harvey-s-mets-debut-1.3863847

  12. Great stuff from Harvey , the CF camera angle is disconcerting to say the least, hard to see those strikes .
  13. Per Metsblog: I dont think anything can get any worse than this right now, Thole later told reporters. We cant wait to get out of here right now, he said, as his team packed up around him before leaving for an 11-game, West Coast road trip that starts tonight. IMO, players wanting to leave for a west coast road trip in order to get away from home is a sign of just how lost this team is. yeah, Thole apparently amended this statement less it came out the wrong way.....west coast trips IIRC usually are not good for the Mets .
  14. This is all very reminiscent of the Howe era....
  15. That settles it, if Seawolf , one of phone games great hitters can't hit Choate then he must be brilliant.
  16. "Oh and the ancient mariner sends that one all the way to the far east"
  17. If Boston could have pulled that kind of deal off it would have been a stunner. Loria better not say this wasn't a salary dump.....LA Times The Dodgers will be paying all of what remains on Ramirez's contract. Ramirez, 28, is still owed about $6 million of his $15-million salary this year. He will earn $15.5 million next year and $16 million in 2014, the final year of his contract.
  18. Yeah, I'd do it.....get Sabean on the phone damn it.....
  19. And for whatever reason fans are not showing up to a brand new stadium. Did they get good pieces for Ramirez? I guess I am wondering if they shopped around and if they could have gotten more, hefty salary though.
  20. Wow, the Marlins dismantling already , what a joke franchise they are .

Another St Johns alum, and one that the writers around this town were desperate for one of the locals to draft back in 2005 (as if they actually knew enough about any of the other candidates to make a legit comparison). This one is a real hail mary. Looks like he's only pitched a handful of innings since like 2008, most of it in the minors, and most of that lousy. I remember that well. Can't believe that was 2005, lived out in Long Island IIRC and the local hacks were out there talking to the family.
  22. Craig Hansen signed to a minor league deal.
  23. Ha! , looks like we were all straining our necks looking at the movies The Last Samurai , very enjoyable movie....underrated perhaps.

  25. Mets should be sellers , 5.5 back in the WC( 56 teams above them)......9.5 in the NL East.......it's not happening.Of course trading the likes of those mentioned won't yield much like you said.
