  1. I have a hunch that Fred and Jeff, in a dickish Trumpian way, liked the idea that BVW might be armed with info on players that other GMs wouldn't have. I predict there will be some NYM FA signing that will be met with a grievance filed by another team or maybe the MLBPA on behalf of a player. Some wacky bullshit the league has never seen before cause we now have this conflicted dude running the show. BTW - this fangraphs article is excellent and might make you look like a SMDH gif in real life. --> https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-mets-brodie-van-wagenen-and-when-agents-join-front-offices/
  2. Every time I see that stupid red-faced mascot - and they love to trot him out more in the playoffs - I want Cleveland to get their asses kicked. I'm rooting for Houston and the continued curse of Wahoo.

Yup, I recalled this conversation with Gary and Keith, as well. After I heard him talk to those guys, it felt more "Weekend at Bernie (Madoff's)" where they just propped David up and rolled him out for a farewell ovation. He understood that and seemed very grateful the org let him do it. I don't think it had anything to do with money.
  4. Fun baseball game. Loved the bat flips on walks, great atmosphere tonight! I still have a bias against the Rockies I can't quite shake. I still think of them as that expansion team with shitty vest uniforms, where the elevation at the home park could turn Dante Bichette or Vinny Castilla into goddamn stars. But I will root for the AAAA Albuquerque Isotopes guys over the Brewers in the DS round.

He took his lumps last year (grabbing an abandoned team, IIRC), but he took full advantage of all the unspent money he had coming into this season. I'm running Pawnee like Leslie Knope.
  6. Congrats Rougned's Odor on the boat-race win! I think you moved into first a month or two ago and just kept steady pace. It was a spirited battle for the other 2 medal positions. Looks like a few more ABs/innings today to shore up 2nd and 3rd. Cool league, cool format. Thanks for letting me crash again this year.
  7. Yeah with the season this far over, I wonder if he found out in-person, or if he got a phone call? Imagine the one thing you've been working at since you were probably 5 years old now gone. Good luck to you, Dale! Go be the best slow-pitch softball player in the entire state of Tennessee!
  8. Damn, Dale. Good run, son.
  9. 5 seasons of professional baseball for Dale Burdick. Cut today by the Mets. Maybe he plays indie ball somewhere? Maybe he gets a real job like the rest of us stiffs. Either way, bravo, young man.

Jeez, they wouldn't even say that of Tebow. David Wright nowadays must be like Spring Training Garth Brooks. Cool to have around, but dear God, we can't actually play him.
  11. Centerfield wrote: I hope that hanging them up was his decision and no one else's. Who knows for sure, but David is nothing if not earnest, and him choking up, talking about how hard it was the day after playing 5 innings seemed it was his call. Wolfie, I was getting a little misty-eyed, too. I didn't think I'd see him step on Citi Field again, so I'm glad he's going to get a quick victory lap. For him and for a bunch of us.
  12. Back to Shapiro, the way he and the Jays handled Vlad Guerrerro Jr. makes me think he would fit in perfectly here. Vladdy destroyed AA (1.120 OPS) and AAA (.978 OPS), but the Jays wouldn't think of calling him up, even though Josh Donaldson (same position, since traded) could barely walk. The Union even put out a statement saying the Jays were manipulating service time to save $$ and Shapiro didn't bat an ey. Vladdy is young (19) but Ronald Acuna and Juan Soto have done alright for themselves at 19 and Guerrerro might be better than both. I fully get the service time argument from the team's side, but the financial motives to bury an elite player look pretty clear.
  13. Pretty much a lost season for my mini-David Wright adoptee. Broken hand pretty much wiped his season and he finished with a .708 OPS in only 73 PA (22 games) at AAA Vegas. Looks like he got a measly 3 games at Brooklyn before the season ended. Heal fast, my dude. Winter league action starting soon.
  14. Dale Burdick just completed his fifth season of professional baseball. He hit a Burdickian .170/.284/.284 (.568 OPS) in 205 PA at St. Lucie before going hitless in Vegas, putting up this uniquely awesome line at AAA: .000/.429/.000 (.429 OPS). He finished 11 PA shy of 1,000 for his professional career. His career batting line is now: .193/.306/.309 (.615). I don't know what the future holds for my dude. He turns 23 in October, a youngin' by any standard except single-A professional baseball prospect. Not sure what the team could reasonably expect from him at AA, but I hope he gets another shot next year, or just Crash Davises another year at St. Lucie. Something. Go, Dale, Go.
  15. I just checked my Grays Sports Almanac to get some end-of-season stats, and it looks like we may have a baller on our hands. First pro season complete, Tommy threw 22 innings in relief for Brooklyn, he gave up only 13 hits and K'd 27 (1.23 ERA, 11.0 K/9). Given his advanced age for A ball (22, 23 next May), I'm calling a St.Lucie/Binghamton double-feature next season for him. Have one last look at him in a Brooklyn uni:
  16. hey guys, why the crap is Nimmo hitting 8th?

  18. I had a strange heavy dude-crush on Chris Sabo. The sports goggles or something. He just looked like a nerd that made the leap to the big time. I loved him.
  19. Yeah, I agree with you, probably on both counts. Definitely the health one. It seems like he gets fooled a lot but still makes shitty contact. That's super anecdotal, I know, but even in that slow-mo gif, he's way out front, yet still manages to make contact while losing the bat with one hand. Like, he takes a lot of ugly-ass swings. Maybe that's the silver bullet.
  20. 5 ribeyes for Frazier today. Everybody in on the ass-kicking.
  21. His grand slam today got me thinking about him. He's got a really nice, level swing, my dudes. slooooooow moooooooooo His launch angles from 2015-2018 are 18.4, 20.3, 20.3, and 17.7 respectively, which fall solidly in the "line drive" category for batted balls (10-25 degrees). Even though he's got a "power hitter" rep, he doesn't have that upper-cut swing. That's good, I'd say. I thought that he K'd way too much, but his 22.3% this year is almost exactly major league average (22.1%), so that doesn't seem to be a make or break thing with him. Maybe he doesn't hit the ball hard enough when he hits it? His exit velocities from 2015-2018 are 89.2, 88.8, 87.5, and 89.4 respectively, which is slightly above league average (which I believe is 86.6). So, I guess that's not it. His BABIP is putridly low every year. Is he perennially unlucky? Very predicable with where he hits the ball? Why isn't this dude any better? Or is he just like a super average dude now? Smart people, what say you?
  22. This game is resuming in a half hour, yeah?
