  1. That would be Pitcher of the month. Does Reyes have enough defensive value to compensate for Gonzalez's June offensive superiority? Discuss..........

But there's a reason why some of the smarter naysayers will point to things like the 80% strand rate and BaseRuns*-- because they're a pretty strong indicator of luck-as-contributing-factor, and most of the time, prove stronger predictors of future success/failure than recent win-loss record.... *- Kinda like Bill James' Runs Created-- a remarkably accurate run-estimator based on hits, walks, and homers. Think Pythagorean Record for runs, based on primary offensive stats. On the other hand, the odds are pretty slim for a non-playoff contender winning nine out of ten. Bump.
  3. The Mets widened their wild card lead to 1.5 games.

The decision regarding what to do when Beltran is ready to play is not a difficult one, and shouldn't be made into one. I am and have been of SMG's mind about this. But I would bet three fingers on my right hand that this won't be the way they end up going. I am and have been of SMG and LWFS's minds. Mitigating factor that might portend the right move: Jerry's willingness to at times, bat Francoeur eighth.
  5. Is this the Oliver Perez is an Asshole thread?
  6. I hope that Lee and Oswalt get to throw many shutouts for the Mets. I'm a zip-rooter.
  7. Well, OF COURSE they're going to say that: I'll betcha John Maine didn't say that. Same for Ollie. And if they did say it, they only said it to say it, not to mean it.

What's there to slam? You shouldn't have to walk on eggshells or apologize seventeen times before you wonder if Santana is declining. Ballplayers get old. They lose their skills. And in the end, they all suck. That's the facts. Otherwise, Seaver would still be pitching for the Mets and Keith would be manning first base. Is Santana declining? I dunno. He definitely doesn't throw as consistently hard as he used to in Minnesota, though.
  10. The Wild Card standings: NL East standings:

  13. Chris Carter is one of several Met feel-good stories that have developed over the last month or so. But I've got a hunch that if the Mets make any significant trade during this season, especially with an AL team, Carter's gone.
  14. R.A. Dickey has become my favorite Met pitcher over his last three or four starts. That knuckle-ball of his is ridiculous. And I say that endearingly. OE. I guess I should say Radickylous.
  15. bmfc1 wrote: With the NL East playing the AL Central this year, I wondered why the Mets were playing the Orioles. Given that they swept and now the MFP play the MFY, the schedule maker may have helped the Mets. The downside is hoping that the MFY win (really that the MFP lose). I thought this was an odd bit of scheduling too, mainly because the Orioles hosted the Mets last year, as well. I didn't look this up, but I'd bet that the Mets never traveled to the same inter-league city in consecutive seasons, The Bronx notwithstanding.
  16. Seaver was brilliant in '77 -- even better than his last Cy Young season of '75. Sometimes, I try and rationalize the trade --unsuccessfully-- on grounds that keeping Seaver wouldn't of made any damn difference as far as the Mets went. I embraced Hendu, but not the other three. I still fondly remember Hendu's rookie season as magical. Other than Gooden, I can't remember any other Met rookie providing as many thrills as Hendu did, especially given that deteriorating context that was the '77 Mets. Like many others, (I assume) I mistakenly thought that Hendu was headed for super-stardom.
  17. Gwreck wrote: It occurred to me that the current starters for the Mets infield are all players who came out of the Mets organization and have only played for the Mets: Davis, Tejada, Reyes, and Wright. Has this happened before? The closest I can come up with was the '69 Mets, who had Kranepool (platooned), Boswell, and Harrelson. This was discussed on SNY or WFAN recently I think. The most recent time this happened (prior to this year) was 1996 when the Mets had an infield of Huskey, Bogar, Ordonez and Alfonzo. That infield was later disqualified because Ordonez had played a few games in an Independent League. If I remember correctly, the last all homegrown Mets infield took the field in 1991.
  18. Jonathon Niese game scores a 91. Only four 2010 game scores surpass Niese's one-hitter. Niese even outscores Ubaldo's (6 BB's) no-no (88 GSC) and Galarraga's imperfect perfecto (88 GSC).
