  1. AFAIK the Mets have worn the specific year's BP jerseys as their ST garb since around that time (84-87) So then what are you referring to when you write about Seaver wearing the '87 roads during ST ''87? Curious here. EXTENDED! I.e. during the summer I thought was where Seaver was doing his attempt. Not in the actual March camp. Oh I see. Summer Spring training. When is extended Spring Training usually then? I know that is a genuine thing, still to this day. And FWIW, Seaver ended the attempt literally on the second day of summer! https://www.amazinavenue.com/2013/6/22/4455088/this-date-mets-history-june-22-tom-seaver-retireshttps://www.amazinavenue.com/2013/6/22/4455088/this-date-mets-history-june-22-tom-seaver-retires I dunno. ST, to me, is what happens down south before the start of the regular season.
  2. Jeez, I missed this whole game -- totally oblivious to the gaydame thing. So did the announcers talk about 1-0 complete games where the winning pitcher drives in the only run with a homer? Hah. I remember the Pizarro game, which I apparently had since forgotten but now remember again.

  6. You can even find a card released by one of the major companies of Seaver in the aformentioned uniform styles! https://www.tradingcarddb.com/Images/Cards/Baseball/1512/1512-78Fr.jpg> https://www.tradingcarddb.com/Images/Cards/Baseball/13211/13211-DE6Fr.jpg> Seaver posed for a whole slew of things in the discontinued two button Mets home pullover jerseys prior to the start of the '83 regular season. The most prominent was for Sportschannel's ad campaigns, featuring Seaver on large posters that hung in NYC's subways for many months, well into the regular season. If I remember correctly that ad campaign had three different posters --- the Seaver, one with Darryl Dawkins and the third with a core member of the dynasty era Islanders.

Cooperative of him to pose.
  9. This is a death bracket. So many awesome covers in this one. I went with the Daily News magazine, which celebrates the team, rather than an individual player -- probably the Mets greatest achievement. The Mets finest hour, indeed! I own a mint condition copy of this mag and had even considered framing it to hang on a wall. It looks beautiful up close. The cover shot has sort of a painterly effect. I wish some of our experienced photographers could explain this effect. Is that simply the film used to take that sweeping shot of Shea as Kooz and Grote embrace and Ed Charles does that dance of sheer joy? I like the way the red ushers' uniforms pop out. The relatively tiny picture of the mag doesn't do it the justice it deserves because the details are so fine. I love this cover. It had to be shot on Kodachrome (for a full explanation, see Simon, Paul ;-) ) Thanks. I thought it was Kodachrome, but not being a photographer, I wasn't sure. I love that "Kodachrome" look. When I fool around with photo manipulation software when I make custom baseball cards, I sometimes try to recreate that look, but with only middling success.

I certainly want to vote for the Frisella/McGraw shot, but how can that compare to the rich saturation Darling gets? Even if the composition was on a par (which it's not), the print can never be. You should check out TSN from about mid-1969, when they transitioned from b&w to color covers, through the late 70s - '76 or '77. TSN put out some of the best sports covers in the business: minimalist uncluttered shots on as large a canvas as there was -- maybe even bigger than the NYT footprint. And that Daily News mag is way more saturated than the Darling SI cover. It's not even a close call. But it might not be so obvious from this thread because the image used in the derby might be a little faded. I suppose glossy stock holds up better with age than newsprint paper stock.
  11. =Centerfield post_id=8656 time=1556632001 user_id=65] I'm blaming: 1. Wilpons. It's always the Wilpons. An extra $30 million spent wisely and we'd be comfortably in first place.

  13. =G-Fafif post_id=8553 time=1556546209 user_id=55] I learned from the Athletic's Tim Britton that the Reds have never had a Cy Young winner, which makes sense if you stop to think about it, but still. Closest to hardware? No. 41 in strike-sundered 1981.
  14. It'd be hard to resist the urge to say "No shit, Glenn Sherlock" any time he gave me advice that I already knew as someone who had played baseball my entire life. Or, you know, if he's ever constipated.
  15. It's outrageous that they started the game at all -- no matter who was scheduled to pitch. The game started at about 10:30. That's when the game should be ending. Sounds like Jon Matlack wouldnt have sent deGrom out to pitch that game. https://omny.fm/shows/880-apple-bites/april-26-player-interview-jon-matlackhttps://omny.fm/shows/880-apple-bites/april-26-player-interview-jon-matlack

I was able to find some covers with Fernandez, presumably upcoming in the derby, so that leads next to ... Leiter? Number one Met of 1998, but ... was he a cover boy? That TV Guide (set of four) that already appeared in the derby.

  19. This is where this gets very subjective. I'm a huge Sid Fernandez fan, but I'd never in a million years figure Sid to be one of the top 10 all time Mets. By that list, Sid was a greater Met than Piazza. But I love that Gary Carter didn't even make that top 24 list. Confirms a lot of my thoughts on Carter the Met.
  20. =MFS62 post_id=8217 time=1556211854 user_id=60] I went with Sport World for the interesting (and wrong) premise. It reminded me of the days when the Mets were still trying to sell their fans on nostalgia (old guys/ old NY teams) when there weren't any exciting young guys (except Ron Hunt) emerging. Speaking of that, were there any voting-worthy covers of Ron Hunt? Later

If that story wasn't clouded in a haze of smoke and tuchuses then I don't know what. How 'bout Denny McClain?
  22. Because the Polo Grounds Mets were the first thing America thought of when the topic of "the greatest moments in sports" came up. True to form, with a national magazine cover on the line, Frank Thomas, hitting star of those bumbling but lovable Mets mishits a squibber that probably needed at least four and a half bounces just to get past the pitcher's mound. Classic.
  23. The Daily News Sunday magazine is something I forgot existed. For years I had a cover from 1979 on my bedroom wall, exclaiming that "If this team has a future, its name is MAZZILLI," which I'd be tickled to see pop up in this competition. I've spent about half an hour last week trying to score an internet image of this Daily News Magazine for the derby, without any luck. I have this mag in my collection. It's somewhere.
  24. Three of the top 10 NL'ers in Adjusted OPS+ are Mets. And Cory Bellinger is off to some start.
