Offseason MLB power rankings: Which team won the winter? Excerpt: The last major domino of free agency fell on Saturday night, when Justin Turner announced his reunion with the Dodgers. The deal effectively placed a bow on major offseason maneuvers. This winter unfolded at a sluggish pace, as teams formulated how to come back from 2020, and the pandemic-shortened season led to reductions in spending. Only five players received more than $64 million in guaranteed salary on the open market; a year earlier, 10 players received that much or more. With his $150 million contract, George Springer was 2021's top earner — and he netted less than half of what his former teammate, Gerrit Cole, got last winter. [***] Still, most of the work is now done. It is time to take stock. Which teams improved the most? Which teams went backward? And which teams are running to stand still? With spring training upon us this week, The Athletic presents a power ranking of the winter just passed. The Disasterpiece 30. Colorado Rockies What can be said about the Rockies' offseason, owner Dick Monfort and general manager Jeff Bridich that wasn't already said by The Athletic's Marc Carig in the days after the Nolan Arenado trade was finalized? The trade, as Carig put it, was “a clear signal of total and complete organizational failure, one that should be studied, analyzed and mined for insights, in hopes that such foolishness is never again repeated.” That sums up the consensus of executives and scouts throughout the industry, not just journalists. Arenado is now gone. So is David Dahl, an All-Star in 2019 and a non-tender after 2020. So is Daniel Murphy, one of the last of Bridich's free-agent misfires, paid a $6 million buyout, a nice gift before retirement. The owner and the GM, though, will remain. [***] Going for it [***] 2. New York Mets It all comes down to expectations. Did the Mets sign J.T. Realmuto, Trevor Bauer and George Springer? No, no and no. And the good feeling departed from the new era of Steve Cohen after disturbing stories emerged about Jared Porter and Mickey Callaway. The Mets have work to do when it comes to reshaping their hiring practices, as does the entire industry. The on-field baseball club did get better this winter, though: Francisco Lindor, Carlos Carrasco, James McCann, Trevor May, Aaron Loup, Joey Lucchesi, Albert Almora Jr., Jonathan Villar. Even if the process fell short of expectations, there is a lot to like, especially if a long-term agreement with Lindor can be reached. 1. San Diego Padres A championship contender blossomed at Petco Park in 2020. Only two teams won more games than the Padres. But the club sputtered in the National League Division Series, outmatched by the Dodgers after injuries felled pitchers Mike Clevinger and Dinelson Lamet. So general manager AJ Preller aimed to augment his rotation this winter. He aimed high, and he succeeded. In a single week, he acquired All-Star starters Yu Darvish and Blake Snell. Preller could have stopped there, and that might have been enough to declare the Padres the kings of the offseason. But he kept pushing to improve the margins of the roster, locking up utility players like Ha-seong Kim and Jurickson Profar while adding Joe Musgrove to the pitching staff. Preller did this while protecting the top end of the farm system. It may not be enough to overtake the Dodgers. But San Diego is going for it. You can't ask for much more from a winter. https://theathletic.com/2387819/2021/02/15/offseason-mlb-power-rankings-which-team-won-the-winter/https://theathletic.com/2387819/2021/02/15/offseason-mlb-power-rankings-which-team-won-the-winter/ __________ I agree with the Mets write-up for the most part. But I would change the word "especially" to "only".

The game celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Rockies debut game, which took place at Shea Stadium in 1993, with the Rockies, naturally, being the road team. Both teams wore 1993 throwbacks. However, there was a two-year period in which the home "Mets" underwent a relatively significant change -- the addition of a tail under the lettering. The Mets will wear those distinctive uniforms on Tuesday against the Rockies, who are turning back the clock to their inaugural season in 1993. The Mets hosted the Rockies 20 years ago for the first-ever game in franchise history, which is why the Rockies will wear their old road grays while the Mets will wear home whites even though the game is being played at Coors Field. The Mets only wore the uniforms in 1993 and 1994 before returning to a more traditional script in 1995. Meanwhile, the Rockies' road uniforms featured the word "Rockies" until the club changed it to "Colorado" beginning in the 2000 season. https://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/mets-to-wear-throwback-uniforms-against-rockies-1.5058711https://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/mets-to-wear-throwback-uniforms-against-rockies-1.5058711

Remember when Sewald won the Schaefer Reliever of the Year award when he might not have even been the Mets third best reliever that year? What a gang-up-on-me clusterfuck that was. It turned out to be my fucking fault that Sewald won an award he didn't deserve to win. http://www.thecranepool.net/phpBB32/posting.php?mode=reply&f=1&t=30092http://www.thecranepool.net/phpBB32/posting.php?mode=reply&f=1&t=30092 Fixed. http://archives.thecranepool.net/26100/f9_t26127.shtmlhttp://archives.thecranepool.net/26100/f9_t26127.shtml

Tyson's so ubiquitous that I forgot all about his past rape rap. I even forgot the details* -- whether I once thought he was truly guilty or railroaded. I do remember the ear-biting incident against Evander Holyfield, though -- very well. Plus, I'm a fan of the Mike Tyson Mysteries cartoon. And it took me a few hours, having to return to the OP, to realize that was even Pete Alonso. So this opening post hardly resonates with me. Did anybody know that the Mets were one of a handful of teams that were already using a humidor? I didn't.
-
Both. Disturbing because the 162 game season tells me that this rule might have some legs beyond this year. Whatever because what the hell can I do about it if I don't like it? Write a letter to the editor?
-
No DH or expanded playoffs. This second base rule is disturbing given that MLB intends to play a 162 game season. Whatever. Fans'll get used to it with time. If this rule was invented at the dawn of baseball, nobody would give it a second thought.

Let's talk about Trevor Bauer

Frayed Knot wrote: I think Cohen's pulling punches either to not annihilate his competitors or to send a signal that he won't be "had". Or, after spending, what?, somewhere around 1/5 of his wealth buying the team, he's opting to spend based on the revenue the club creates rather than spending at a pace that might require him to dump even more cash into it in the very first year, especially when you consider that the club's revenue was limited last year by a shortened season played without fans and conditions are uncertain heading into this season. Give me a break already. Cohen's like no other owner and in a category all by himself. You could steal $30M from him every single month and he wouldn't even notice. Do you also think that the Mets are worth what Cohen paid for based upon strict accounting principles? Jeez, I guess it woulda bankrupted him to offer Springer another $20M or $25M. Spread out over six years. -

I think Cohen's pulling punches either to not annihilate his competitors or to send a signal that he won't be "had". And the upshot is that he whiffed on Realmuto, Springer and Bauer for a collective total amount of money that's pennies to him. -
Let's talk about Trevor Bauer

The guy actually posted a https://twitter.com/BauerOutage/status/1358618486348500993multi-tweet apology to Mets fans for inadvertently leaking promotional materials that he wanted to have ready to go. I'm not really sure what his angle is on this, aside from potentially trying to keep the door open for another FA flirtation next winter if he has a good 2021 and opts out of his LA deal. I don't buy it and that tweet was no mistake. He's a fucking idiot. (And a great pitcher). I can't quite put my finger on it but that tweet and his agent's tweet -- "Down to 2" -- annoy me more than anything else Bauer did. He played the Mets as far as I'm concerned. -
“All right, H.B. If you'll play ball with me, I'll play ball with you.” —Darrin Stephens (Dick Sargent), “The Phrase is Familiar,” Bewitched, January 15,1970 (S. 6, E. 17) — as soon as he spouts this cliché (per Endora's spell), Darrin and the client to whom he's speaking are suddenly wearing Mets uniforms. Darrin's is No. 9, with the MLB patch from the 1969 season, à la J.C. Martin. That looks like a real-deal authentic uniform, too. Edgy MD wrote: There's a pain point for everybody. The only guy I want to overpay for is Lyle Overbay. Whose "pain point" are you talking about? Yours? Or the Mets? Because if it's your "pain point", why should we care? (Make your case). And if it's the Mets "pain point", well the Mets offered Bauer more money than the Dodgers did. I can't complain about the Mets pursuit of Bauer. They did all they could. It appears that Bauer wanted to play for his home town team all along and migtht've been using the Mets as a bargaining chip against the Dodgers. I don't have a gripe with the posters here who didn't want the Mets to sign Bauer for personality reasons. Even though Syndergaard never had a 60 game stretch as good as Bauer's 2020. And even though Bauer was better than Syndergaard over the last three seasons even if Bauer was mediocre in 2019. And Bauer's not coming off of Tommy John surgery. Whatever. I thought Gary Carter was an enormous dick, too, but I tolerated him. A different sort of dick. A manipulative dick. But a dick. Still, Bauer comes with performance risks. His Cy Young came in a 60 game season where he pitched almost exclusively against his division. He's using a substance to enhance his spin rate and should baseball suddenly crack down on the use of that substance, well then who knows how good Bauer will be, then. Maybe another 2019? Who knows? My beef is with these posts about how now the Mets can afford to extend Conforto and Syndergaard, having not signed Bauer. I mean, $30M is like pizza-pie money to Steve Cohen but I guess this hasn't sunk in. And yes, Syndergaard will come a lot cheaper than Bauer. That's because Syndergaard's not as good. -

Dodgers overpaid in every way. So what? You give a shit? This bothers you? It's your money? And how much more money was the Dodgers offer compared to the Mets, anyway? Because the Mets didn't offer to "overpay"? The Mets offered more money and would've made Bauer the highest paid player over the first two years of the contract. -
