  1. Maybe not. https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2002-02-13-0202130284-story.htmlhttps://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2002-02-13-0202130284-story.html Also, made famous in song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qb2SBKaTIwIhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qb2SBKaTIwI

  3. Edgy MD wrote: https://snyted.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/mo-vaughn.jpg?w=640> I can tell by the sandwich, the table and by the background that that's gotta be the vanished Carnegie Deli.
  4. Baseball Prospectus 2020 commentary on Trevor Bauer heading into the 2020 season (player comments are typically at least one paragraph long): "For all the coverage concerning Bauer, we now have a lot of data - 1,117 innings worth - suggesting he's a mid-rotation starter. "
  5. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: The Rays needed to make room on their 40 for the trade haul, so traded LH reliever Jose Alvarado to the Philles in 3-way action with the Dodgers, who get Garrett Cleavinger from the Phils and sent over a minor league infielder and PTBNL to Tampa. Alvarado has been pretty OK. Trade action between two of baseball's smartest teams. Maybe the Mets'll join their ranks now that BVW (how pathetic) got the axe and Sandy isn't under Jeff's thumbs anymore. How humiliating that must've been. It's like when the CDC had to answer to that scumbag fraud Ivanka.
  6. Edgy MD wrote: An important part of the Hodges argument is combining the managing and playing careers into one legacy. I don't know if Posnanski is doing that. I think it's playing career only. Three more: Albert Pujols, Mark McGwire and Joey Votto.
  7. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=52842 time=1609131613 user_id=68] 1st basemen on Po's Outsiders list (so far): 93 - Darrell Evans (mainly a third baseman) 92 - Steve Garvey 89 - Al Oliver (but he played 1b mainly at the tail end of his career) 87 - Lance Berkman (see Al Oliver comment) 80 - Will Clark 72 - John Olerud 53 - Don Mattingly 32 - Rafael Palmeiro 23 - Fred McGriff 22 - Keith Hernandez (Po sez Keith's career was better than modern 1st basemen HOF'ers Tony Perez and Orlando Cepeda). MIA (for now) Dick Allen Gil Hodges

  9. He was part of the answer to the trivia question I used to stump Bill Mazur. The question was: "Who are the only two pitchers in major league history to have led their league in all of the following: GS, CG, IP, H, ER, BB, K, ERA, W and L (not all in the same season)". Later Steve Carlton.
  10. What in the name of Tony the tuttsi fruttsi ice cream salesman is going on here with this thread? It hasn't blown up too much yet.... Tell me when it does blow up, whatever you're talking about. but a noted nostalgia based Met blogger noted that.... Do I need to buy the secret Met blogger decoder volume of books from Chico Marx to figure out who the noted nostalgia based Mets blogger is? How about a name? And a fucking link to the article? I'd argue that it could be deflecting some darker and private reasoning that [Cohen'd] rather not disclose.... I think Cohen was raping 10 nuns with a broomstick that he shoved up their counts. What else could it be? Nothing else. That's what. Uh, oh. I added the letter "o" to "that" word. Now I'm in trouble. Can't say count around Rogers. He hates it when I say count. In his blog piece this morning he also picks up on a thing in the same article where Cohen uses no specific moments when describing Darryl Strawberry's presence as a hitter, and gets on the author for not following up, or at least printing a retort. Who, Rogers, Who? Or maybe you prefer Whom, Rogers? Whom? Whom's blog piece? What's the secret? And a link? Thank you. Did it blow up yet?
  11. =DocTee post_id=52827 time=1609115653 user_id=85] For all the love Keith gets, he's not even the best first-baseman of his era to be overlooked by the HOF: check out Cecil Cooper.
  12. The MLB network is showing Niekro stuff.Met related stuff-- Ed Kranepool said Niekro' was the toughest pitcher to hit. Bob Boone said Seaver was the best he ever faced but Niekro was the toughest to hit. And poor John Milner -- shown fanning against Niekro as a Met and then some seconds later, as a Pirate.
  13. The MLB channel's got some Seaver programming this afternoon beginning at 1:30. Studio 42 with Bob Costas, then two games: Seaver's no-hitter and his 300th win. Hours and hours and hours of programming from his peak years as a Met.
  14. Gil Hodges isn't on the list. Will he be the highest ranked one-time Met?

  16. Edgy MD wrote: Jerry Koosman and Willie Randolph strike me as two guys who should be in the Hot 100 but don't belong in any Top 20. Rusty Staub, too, and maybe Tug McGraw. I think Randolph made the list. I'll check. Yep.

  18. Agreed. It's an upgrade and that's what should matter most. But how do you break Cohen's bank? It'd take a heck of a lot more than a baseball player. Or 200 baseball players.
  19. The Outsiders: No. 22, Keith Hernandez https://theathletic.com/2276406/2020/12/23/the-outsiders-no-22-keith-hernandez/https://theathletic.com/2276406/2020/12/23/the-outsiders-no-22-keith-hernandez/ Joe Posnanski counts down the best 100 MLB'ers not in the Hall of Fame. I suppose Barry Bonds will get the #1 spot. Anyways, Joe's up to #22 today and the featured non Hall-of-Famer is Keith Hernandez. Other Mets that made Joe's list: Dwight Gooden, Bret Saberhagen, Johan Santana and John Olerud.

  22. Wasn't there a thread here from a long, long time ago where youse spoke with or wrote to Frank Thomas and there was a DIY custom Thomas Mets basebal card involved?
