But I'm almost certain it isn't Montreal. 4 million in the Montreal area, and I think Paris is larger than that. But I don't think it's Paris, either. Dakar, Senegal.

  3. Supplemental picks that teams are given at the end of the first round are variously described as first-rounders, 1a picks, or sandwich-round picks. For the purposes of this quiz, we will treat these as legit first-rounders. Just noticed this rule. Cap'n David Wright.
  4. While we're waiting, one more hotshot catching prospect that we got in return for a popular pitcher - Travis d'Arnaud.

Beltran actually bitched about the fans quite a bit his first season, IIRC. Then he became the Beltran we paid for and more, and all was forgotten. Hopefully the same will happen with Lindor.

  7. Lindor was OK for the second half, though still not the guy we paid $341M for.
  8. Too many injuries. Only Alonso among the everyday players had a fully healthy season. And of the others, only Nimmo played to realistic expectations when he did suit up. Funny thing is that other than JdG, the team was pretty healthy in August and September. The Mets did much better when they were being carried by the _illar brothers and a bunch of guys named Joneshwy. For the whole summer, it was "hold on until Lindor starts hitting and the team gets healthy". Then Lindor started hitting, the team got healthy, and we sucked. I'm completely stumped. Rojas made some questionable decisions, but we would have been a .500ish team with the ghosts of Connie Mack, John McGraw, and Gil in the dugout. A bunch of great hitters - looking at Conforto, Smitty, and McNeil - weren't just off this year. They were abysmal. McCann, too, though he wasn't there for his bat. If they'd even been just OK, the team would have been competitive.
  9. Edgy MD wrote: Absolutely they could, but they probably want to make it part of the next CBA. If they're holding X amount of jobs just out of reach, they want to see what they can get the union to concede in exchange. Does the union have an interest in creating more jobs, or just looking out for the people they currently represent? I guess there's some marginal benefit to current players in that there will be that many more places for them to catch on when they're just in the top 832 players in the world instead of the top 780. Whatever happens, if Montreal gets a team, I hope they go all-out in keeping their history. Call them the Expos. Retire all the numbers the Nationals unretired, especially Rusty's. Bring back Youppi. And keep the logo that nobody realizes is an M until they've looked at it for four or five years.
  10. Yeah. I have to figure that the Rays are trying to leverage a new ballpark in the Tampa Bay area and the city of Montreal is trying to showcase itself in case the major leagues ever expand to 32 teams.
  11. The only article I could find in the Montreal press is in French. https://www.journaldemontreal.com/2021/09/25/une-banniere-pour-promouvoir-la-garde-partagee-des-rayshttps://www.journaldemontreal.com/2021/09/25/une-banniere-pour-promouvoir-la-garde-partagee-des-rays Announcement not likely to be made until after Montreal's mayoral election on November 7, but the team is planning to put up a banner promoting the plan in foul territory near right field during the playoffs (which sounds like a bit of an FU to the Tampa Bay region, but whatever). Tampa is on board with building a new ballpark to accommodate the club for part of a season to entice them to move from St. Petersburg, so this whole thing may just be a way to put the screws to St. Pete. Plan is to have spring training in the Tampa Bay area and have the team play regular season home games there until early June, and then move to Montreal for the remainder of the season. Does this mean Montreal gets 2/3 of the home games, or that the schedule will be written to pack half the home games in the first third of the season? Playoff home games would alternate. I can't see this happening until 2023, though. I think the only place the Expos could play until a real stadium is completed is Olympic Stadium. The Jays play a couple of spring training games there every year, but t don't know if it's in shape to host regular season games. And the street where it's located is completely torn up and closed to cars through the end of 2022, though there can be work-arounds to that problem. It's possible to access the parking areas from the street that runs behind the stadium, though that could get ugly. I wonder if anyone has asked the union what they think. I gotta believe players don't want to be splitting their home games between two cities.

  13. But, wow, did that suck. That ball was hit way too hard and way too shallow to send Villar.
  14. 2 hours and we're in the 9th. Can't remember the last time I've seen that happen.
  15. Win this one, and five years from now I might even remember that Rich Hill was a Met.
  16. So, he was dozing in his car? Parked, I assume? I've read that, legally, sleeping off a drunk inside a parked car is considered DUI, but it's always struck me as ridiculous.
  17. =G-Fafif post_id=73404 time=1628083418 user_id=55] All suspended games officially revert back to whence they begun.
  18. =bmfc1 post_id=74516 time=1628974284 user_id=73] The last name of one pitcher is the first name of the other pitcher. Call Elias!
  19. Frayed Knot wrote: Which brings a question to mind: which states have hosted ML* games despite never having a home franchise? * limiting this to NL/AL games since 1901 Not exactly a state (yet) but Puerto Rico hosted a whole lot of Expos "home" games in 2004.
  20. I'm certainly not. Without checking the numbers, Diaz has always seemed much better on a day's rest. May needed to get it done, and Familia (and McNeil) needed to bail him out when he couldn't.
