  1. The link seems to go to Lucas Duda, in 2015, against lefties only. I can't seem to get it to switch to other years, and against all pitchers. Anyway, DJ is right. Lucas hits fly balls the other way, but all of his ground balls are hit to the right side. Which is why the shift is effective against him. If he learned to go the other way on the ground, consistently, there are a lot of holes on that side of the field to find base hits. And if you do that enough, they have to stop shifting.
  2. I like Duda a lot too. And loved Olerud during his time here. I'm also a big fan of Jacob deGrom and his "aw shucks" demeanor. All of these make sense. But I also love Cespedes who is as far from Duda as one can be. And Rickey Henderson is one of my all-time favorites. I think I like the humble guys, and the comically outlandish.
  3. I guess you keep him through spring training if nothing comes up. Guys get hurt. If not on our team, then on others. Having an extra 30 HR guy is a good thing.
  4. I think with that leg kick, he is always going to be a streaky hitter. I just hope that one day he can learn to be a bit more productive during his valleys. Like if he doesn't hit HR's but can put the ball in play, take a few walks. Not be a complete black hole.
  5. I went with Ces. The headline pun isn't that great, but otherwise lots of good things about the cover. First off, a great moment in the season. I didn't think for a second they would pitch to him. But then they left one out over the plate and it was over. Jumped out of my seat for that one. Love the bat flip. Reminds me of the one he hit against the Dodgers in Game 3 that nearly brought Citi down. Also, the picture is great. He just looks so cool. And I love how the headline sets up against (and behind) the picture. Wil Power is fun too, but if Wilmer is the star of the photo, it should be about him exulting, not crouched down as Cabrera takes the helmet.

  7. This question requires you to put on a shirt.
  8. Which suggests that it is being abused. And the downside there, is that a ballplayer who really needs those meds will suffer in their non-baseball life because of it. I don't know that there is a solution, but the poor kids shouldn't have to make a choice.
  9. I went with Seeds. It's an imperfect cover, but it was a terrific moment. Final Four material for me. I really don't like the orange "SUNDAY SPORTS" headline. It's unnecessary and only serves to take away from the picture.
  10. I like landslide. Action shot, a fun game, the headline fits nicely with the picture of Ces. Yanks failing in the clutch. The picture is nothing special, and I don't think there is anything particularly creative about the headline. I think you could have done a number of things with six HR's. But it's solidly good.
  11. That back view is better. The cover makes it look like no one is there. The back view celebrates the moment for what it is.
  12. You're...Ben Grimm right? This is your poll? Sure is. I'm Diamond Dad. I break ties. Good. We got one. So I've heard. May I come in?
  13. That's what a tiebreaking vote should look like. Swoop in wearing a tux and fix the situation like Winston Wolf.
  14. This one is closer than I thought it would be. Exit polls had Asdrubal in a landslide beating Terry 3-1. How could they be so wrong? Are people embarrassed to admit they like Wet and Wild?
  15. Now if only I could figure out BG's connection to Beyonce.
  16. Hey, sorry about the obscure reference. Beltran's walk up music as a Met was "El Esta Aqui". BG commented that he heard it as "Vanis Takee". Since then, it's become Carlos's unofficial nickname. It's a favorite here at CPF. I heard that BG is trying to get someone to perform the song at this year's Cover Derby celebration but so far A-List performers have been shunning him.
  17. I'm guessing it wasn't really a protracted negotiation for the agent. I'm guessing he doesn't get paid if Mejia is banned. If he does, I need to start representing banned MLB players.
  18. Reyes getting hitting advice from the 'Los. Still love the guy. One of my favorite Mets of all time. You're never too old to take advice, nevertheless from one of the greatest to ever do it. Bro 4 life!! @cbeltran3 🙏". Any admin that knows how to imbed instagram please be my guest.
  19. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: GAME SET MATCH a much better headline and I like how its composed such that Lugo isn't just on top of the mastead but reaching right through the page at you thanks to his glove obscuring the headline. I hadn't noticed this the first time, and it ended up being the tie-breaker for me.
  20. This really is a tough one! I'm going to give it more thought. Picking Gsellman versus Lugo is tough enough as it is. But these covers are also so evenly matched! *Both are wins against the Nats. Gsellman gets us on the board. Lugo takes the rubber game. Both were great games. PUSH *The Lugo pic is an action shot, but the Gsellman reaction shot is still better. ADVANTAGE GSELLMAN *Gsellman has the regular uniform, Lugo is wearing the tacky throwback. ADVANTAGE GSELLMAN *GAME SETH MATCH is the much better headline. ADVANTAGE LUGO *Lugo's subheadline is direct and to the point. Gsellman's is too wordy and clutters the cover. ADVANTAGE LUGO *Gsellman has the Yankees losing. Lugo has them salvage one game. ADVANTAGE GSELLMAN *But Gsellman also references the Mets losing the game before. ADVANTAGE LUGO
  21. I worry that the NL East is better as a whole, making it more likely that we have to take the division to make the playoffs.
  22. Loser of this Deathmatch gets traded for middle relief!
  23. Cespedes re-signed January 22 last year. Maybe shit just doesn't happen in early January. I think the holdup here is Bruce. Sandy's on record saying he wants to move him first. Also, aren't we out of room on the 40?
  24. Lots of us here act like jackasses. I'm front and center. It's a family. Families fight, act like assholes, and then bond together because whether we like it or not, we're all stuck with each other and in the end, we all want the same thing. Plus, we make each other laugh and feel sane.
  25. Edgy MD wrote: Benjamin Grimm wrote: I voted for SIGH OF RELIEF. It's a rather ordinary cover, but SULTAN OF SWAAT is too cluttered. I don't like when the headline obscures the player as it does in this cover. Yeah, there's not as much to work with on SIGH OF RELIEF, but the layout artist stays within him- or herself and totally outcomposes SULTAN OF SWAAT. Give me 10 minutes, and I can think of a half dozen cleverer headlines, half of them shorter, of Noah Syndergaard hitting two homers. You can take the Thor's hammer angle, you can talk about Thor's thunder striking twice, something about Noah taking two of everything ... OK, those all suck, but still. Wait, I got this. TWO HAMMERS AND THOR[/bigpurple]
