  1. When you say, "a year's supply of Rice-A-Roni", do you mean: A. Enough Rice-A-Roni to last you a year, if Rice-A-Roni were the only thing you ate or B. As much Rice-A-Roni as one would reasonably expect to eat in a year? Big difference.
  2. If you're going to suspend for drunk and disorderly conduct you are going to end up suspending half the league. And most of the fans. Some tipsy guy was even rumored to have run into Fran Healy while walking out of Shea Stadium and telling him, despite years of complaining about him, that he was the best announcer in the world.
  3. I think this is a very tricky subject for MLB. I understand that MLB is not bound by the burden of proof necessary for a criminal conviction (beyond a reasonable doubt). I'm fine with that. But they cannot be allowed to suspend a player and deprive them of income simply because they suspect that something happened without sufficient evidence. The DV laws are designed to encourage arrests and be overbroad. There are many reasons behind this, all of which I support. But then a further investigation must be done. The results of that further investigation are critical to whether MLB should be allowed to suspend. In my opinion, MLB should at least find, by a preponderance of the evidence (the non-criminal burden of proof in most cases), that DV has occurred before they can punish. I think that in both the Chapman and Reyes cases, this was the case. If they are invoking punishments without even meeting this level then I think their punishments are arbitrary. For Familia, if the reports are true, it appeared that the Judge and prosecution came to the affirmative conclusion that no domestic violence occurred. That is a big, big difference than charges being dropped because there wasn't enough evidence to prosecute. I don't know if MLB is able to access the Court files. But an affirmative ruling by the Court would seem to indicate that no suspension should be warranted. I would fight like hell if I were Familia. (Unless the reports are wrong, and he did actually hit his wife. Then MLB should suspend him and he should accept it.)
  4. Endy Chavez' family probably approves of the naming scheme.
  5. Son of a Yankee fan. Although I make fun of them a lot here, I don't really hate the Yankees (some of their fans are another story). I remember my dad buying me a Dave Winfield shirt when I was 6. During the early '80's I wondered why the Mets were so bad, and I felt bad that they were always the butt of jokes. I remember watching the Jeffersons and hearing George make a crack about them. Then, in second grade, a couple of guys in my class were talking about how the Mets were on the verge of being good. I didn't think that was possible. I had been told my whole life that the Mets were terrible. So I started reading about them out of curiosity. They had a player named Mookie, which I thought was cool, and some new guy named Strawberry. When Dwight Gooden arrived, I was hooked for life. 1985 was the first time I watched baseball avidly. To this day I have not seen a better pitcher.

I think they feel that this suggests that baseball is in some way easier or inferior to football. Which is, of course, really stupid logic. Michael Jordan failing at baseball while being maybe the best ever at basketball proves nothing more than the fact that Jordan was less suited to (and less practiced at) baseball than he was at hoops. But it's not like the sport of baseball gained anything by his brief failure. The argument some of these baseball defenders get behind is that some poor baseball lifer is being denied a spot on a roster, an argument which actually fit Jordan better as he was promoted directly to AA where he held down a spot all year despite being a .200 hitting corner OF without power. Tebow hasn't even gotten to the point where that kind of decision has come up yet. All fair. But I imagine there is some sort of "Who's *$#! is bigger" type of competition between guys who cover football and guys who cover baseball. Or any sport for that matter. And they would be mortified if an athlete failed at another sport, then came on and succeeded at their's. Again, all really stupid logic, but I imagine there is some of that out there.
  7. It's interesting to compare the Tebow experience to that of Rick Ankiel. Now, of course Ankiel was successful in that he made it back to the majors as a position player, but was never really good. When Ankiel started over again, he was painted as heroic. A story in perseverance. A feel good story that made you want to root for him. Tebow, is lambasted. Some, it seems, are actively rooting against him. Like I said, I don't know enough about Tebow to know if he is generally unlikeable, but to me he seems a decent enough guy, no scandals, no wife beating, no drugs. Why not give him a chance?
  8. I feel like Terry Collins would have been an armed services guy.
  9. Hits like one too. Only 2 HR's says the article. But the kid is only 19.
  10. Oh crap. Wrong forum. Can one of you Russian-Sympathists move to the Baseball Forum?
  11. Yoelkis Cespedes, that is, Yo's younger brother. [youtube:21h0bozu]_5KN4r0IomQ[/youtube:21h0bozu] A couple notes: *Swing kinda looks like his brother *Strong throwing arm *Doesn't slide This article says he's not as good as his big brother, but only 19. http://nypost.com/2017/01/30/yoenis-cespedes-brother-is-an-intriguing-mystery-about-to-be-revealed/

Frayed Knot wrote: Gee Keith, do you think that might have something to do with Tebow being essentially a beginner thrown into his first game action in a league which is often used as a showcase for teams to put their up and coming hopeful stars? Look, the odds of Tebow ever appearing in a ML game are a thousand to one if not longer. But I'm not sure who's worse, the football press who's pissed off at him for committing the sin of choosing to do something with his life other than football, or the baseball purists who act all offended by someone who doesn't come up through the normal channels even one willing to subject himself to the tough road of back fields and bus rides. I think what offends the baseball guys are the idea that a football player can fail at that sport, then just jump over and play baseball. I think they feel that this suggests that baseball is in some way easier or inferior to football. I think this is why they go out of their way to insult Tebow and say things like he's the worst guy in the universe, bla bla bla. I'm not a football guy. I really don't get the attention given to Tebow.
  13. Man. Poor guy. Here's to hoping he gets the B. Far more important than any W's.
  14. Are we deleting threads that are unfavorable to the admins here? Are posters mysteriously disappearing? Why has the Russian been deleted from our member list? I've always felt that there was some serious corruption here at the CPF. Anthony Recker is far more popular than he has any business being. And in case anything should happen to me, I think all of you should know that I've left some pretty interesting pictures and screenshots with my attorneys...
  15. Yes, definitely bring it back. It's a great way to re-live the season. I tend to vote on a number of factors, the story involved, the picture, the headline, the sidebar, everything. I like that the rules are open-ended. But I'm fine if you guys want to tailor those next year. Not really about the competition but in just re-living all the great moments of the season.
  16. Thank god for this Cover Derby. I can't imagine how boring this winter would have been without it. I don't know what we will talk about once this ends. I guess by that time Yoenis Cespedes will be driving his cars to spring training. Or Matt Harvey will start peeing again.
  17. That's pretty exciting. When was the last time we had a prospect ranked that high? I don't remember Conforto or Syndegaard reaching that sort of level.
  18. I was just thinking I could wear it to Jimmy Buffet concerts!
  19. I kinda like the hat too. Without the Florida outline, it might be a favorite of mine.
  20. Sorry. I was talking about a Rosario. From what I remember, this was the first year he put up any offensive numbers.
  21. That seems way high. The kid has hit for one season.
  22. Ok. So no more opening this thread at work. It's bad enough I have to look over my shoulder every time Maja's picture comes up.
  23. But seriously, 1 year, $7 million. You roll the dice on something like that no? Come on Mets.

The Rockies probably aren't looking to move folks, but... coming-off-a-down-year Jake McGee, anyone? Man. I need to show the world I am healthy so I can get that long-term deal. One year where I can put up great numbers to show I'm back at full-strength. Cindy? Get my agent on the phone...tell him I want to go to Colorado.
  25. Sorry, I think I am being careless with words here. I really don't know much about the lefties we have. I fear that aren't well stocked there and we are going to pine for someone to attack the big lefty hitters. If these guys are prospects, meaning young guys in our organization who have shown promise who we can reasonably expect to succeed, I'm all for that. If these guys are older, from other organizations, but our scouts see something new that they feel will be a difference maker, and we can reasonably expect them to succeed, then that's fine too. If we are taking a bunch of guys who suck and just playing a numbers game, then I think this is leaving too much to chance.
