If you regard a place as a dump, and tell folks it's a dump, it becomes a dump. Especially when you take affirmative steps to dumpify it. Gotta give kudos to a top notch thread title here.
  2. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I have to wonder how guys like Walter Johnson or Christy Mathewson would fare today. 1. If they were born in 1995 and came through the same system that today's pitchers did. - OR - 2. If they emerged from a time machine and got assigned to the rosters of the Nationals and the Mets, respectively. Time Machine: They'd stand no chance. They'd get lit up every outing and eventually quit. Born in 1995: I'm not sure how you calculate the odds here, but a few nuggets to consider: Quick google search says the US Population in 1915 was about 97M ppl, 90% of whom were white. Take away the women, and you have Walter slotting in as the best pitcher in about $43.5M people. Today, the US population is about 334M people, and thankfully, all races are eligible. Since a woman has yet to crack the majors, we'll take away half the population again, leaving us 167M people. There were 24 teams in 1915, and there are 30 now, which means 6 more pitching staffs to fill out from the extra 123M eligible folks. Of course, today, Walter has to compete with folks from PR, the Dominican, Korea, Japan, Canada, Mexico, etc. Foreign born players comprise about 30% of MLB rosters. I mean, there's no way to know how Walter, specifically, would end up. But I'm sure people smarter than me could calculate the odds that he makes the majors, dominates, etc. I'd think his floor is pretty high still. Like as long as he doesn't get injured you'd think he'd at least be a high-level college player.
  3. Mine dreams are kinda strange. I mean, it starts out fine, but gets weird pretty fast 1. 1985 Gooden 2. 2013 pre-injury Harvey 3. Nuke Laloosh 4. my fourth grade teacher Mrs. Keefe 5. a penguin
  4. Definitely concerned. Last fall I thought he might be pitching hurt. But whatever it is should have healed by now. I dunno. I got a bad feeling about this season and I can't really figure out why. I feel like we are a little weaker in all aspects of our team. Plus we're not staying healthy.
  5. Yeah. The two syllable “Mets” is a dead giveaway.
  6. With the extra wild card we would never see 90 wins again. This playoff format was built for Wilpon
  7. 2023 hasn't even started yet, and I'm already starting to wonder if it's going to be one of those years.
  8. Have no issue with players wanting to represent their country. It's just idiotic that they would hold this tournament before the season. And I realize that there's no good time to have an injury that takes 8 months to heal, but at least you take out some of the risk if you have it in winter.
  9. =Fman99 post_id=89664 time=1650304327 user_id=86] I think it makes more sense to use the team name than it does the A or N for AL/NL. That's just me. CHC and CHW and NYM and LAD all make more sense than the AL/NL equivalents do, or would.
  10. Maybe if they didn't start immediately with the runner it would be ok. First two extra innings are played normally. Then two with a runner on 2nd. Then two with runners on 2nd and 3rd but start with one out.

  12. Can't blame Correa if the Mets insisted on yearly physicals following the 6 year guaranteed portion. The missing time clause makes sense. I think either we screwed up here, or Cohen had cold feet and tanked the deal.
  13. Mind boggling that Steve Cohen would make public comments before seeing the physical. Unless Boras held something back, it's inexplicable.

  16. According to this article https://www.businessinsider.com/billionaire-hedge-fund-manager-steve-cohen-sells-nyc-condo-photos-2019-5#the-homes-great-room-has-ceilings-that-are-more-than-12-feet-tall-7https://www.businessinsider.com/billionaire-hedge-fund-manager-steve-cohen-sells-nyc-condo-photos-2019-5#the-homes-great-room-has-ceilings-that-are-more-than-12-feet-tall-7 he had decorated the place with all this awful art, just big dull squares. It all looks the same, and all looks like a child could have painted it. Nice digs, though. I'm often struck by how grown up other people are. Like, if I was a bazillionaire, my mansion wouldn't look anything like that. I can't even imagine wasting space and money on a library. I mean, not before I get a giant two floor TV. A batting cage. Life-size replica of the Millennium Falcon. Laser Tag. An aquarium big enough to have sharks.
  17. Kinda wishing I came up with a better thread title than I did. Certainly doesn't hold up to the standard around here. But I also kinda like that I came immediately to CPF and posted my immediate reaction.
  18. This medical condition is so bizarre. There are bits of information floating around, but I have yet to see anything definitive. None of this makes sense to me. *The consensus seems to be that he "passed" his physical, but that the Giants took issue with something minor. *Speculation is that the minor injury was a broken ankle from Correa's pre-MLB days *Why schedule a press conference if you aren't happy with the medicals? I feel like you clear that hurdle before making arrangements with the press *If it's true that the Giants wanted to renegotiate the deal, the injury must have been minor enough that they weren't yet ready to walk away *The only real thing that makes sense is that the Giants got cold feet. And if that's the case, it's hard to understand how they will have any credibility in the marketplace again. Or with their fans.
  19. Guys. We got Correa.
  20. A healthy Conforto is a good get at the right price. I was wondering if he had a chronic bad shoulder, so I looked it up. In 2017, he dislocated his left shoulder swinging and missing. Last January, it was his right shoulder. So I guess these injuries are unrelated. Or, alternatively, he has two bad shoulders instead of one.

I wonder if Nomar and Mia Hamm had any athletic offspring? Twin daughters and a younger son. Probably got scholarship offers in pre-school.
  22. Frayed Knot wrote: I don't care where the payroll is and never have. That's not what I'm saying here. I'm talking about not finding yourself in a position where you need to replace and/or retain your #s 1, 3, & 4 starters plus your closer plus your starting CF, all just to get back to status quo (except that each is now older, more expensive, and more committed to potential down years) because they all hit 30 (or more) and hit the FA market at the same time. And this is all just one year after spending the previous winter scouring the open market to find a starting RF, LF, 3B plus several starters and several relievers because you had no in-house candidates to fill those spots or were too impatient to wait and see if you did. I understand why it's happening this way now and you can't argue with the short term results. But it's also not a trend I want to see happen each and every off-season. All good points. I would guess that Steve Cohen has no intention of spending to this degree year after year, and he's doing this out of necessity based upon (1) a bare farm system, and (2) his self-proclaimed 3-5 year window. I'm guessing that he's hoping his investment into scouting etc will allow him to develop some home-grown talent and eventually bring payroll down. It's a little ironic that the end of the Wilpon Era coincided with the "Everyone makes the playoffs" era. The Wilpons would have been thrilled to pump out 86 win teams with the hope that they would sneak into the playoffs.
  23. Wow. Not that much AAV. Worried about his walks and lack of strikeouts. But if he's anywhere near as good as advertised this is a great pickup.
  24. I can't imagine what Texas would force us to take in return if they took both these guys off our hands. Maybe Ted Cruz.
