  2. Am I the only one thinks the guy on the left of the Carter card does not look like Gary?
  3. metirish wrote: You know, I'm not going to hold something against Collins that happened over ten years ago , it looks like Collins or Melvin.....I can be happy with either. This shouldn't be construed as an endorsement of Backman, however, aren't Wally's actions from a long time ago being held against him?* (*I do realize losing a clubhouse and beating up a wife are two entirely different situations) Edgy DC wrote: A few tweets from Bob Klapish are stating outright that DePodesta has steered the search away from inexperience (Backman) toward experience (Collins). Interesting, coming from a guy who was given the reins of a franchise at age 31 without prior GM experience.
  4. Prepared, too. Or so I hear.
  5. I think you might be thinking of Mrs. Santana.
  6. Those are my predictions on what the Yanks will do (I agree with your take on Jeter's worth). Santana and Sabathia were both at least a couple of years younger than Lee when they signed their respective contracts...that's why I see them not going to a seventh year.
  7. Edgy DC wrote: I mean the following numbers aren't that crazy: Jeter: Four years, $70 million. Rivera: Three years, $50 mIllion. Pettitte: Two years, $25 million. Lee: Seven years, $150 million. Werth: Three years, $45 million. Four years for Jeter sounds about right, but I go lower 4/$50m. I think they will go 2 years on Rivera, something like 2/$28m, and 1 year on Pettitte for about 10M. They'll chase Lee, but I don't think they will go to 7 years. How about 6 at $125m? As to Werth, I have thought they were doing a stealth recruitment of either Werth or Crawford, despite proclamations that they really like the Gardner, Granderson, Swisher combo and were not looking to upgrade the OF. I think they will pull a Teixeira, and swoop in at the last minute to grab Crawford, since he's a bit younger. They'll be willing to give him 6 years and more than $100m, because they can. Semi-bold prediction: in addition to Mo, they grab Soriano in a 2 or 3 year deal. $8-$10 m per.
  8. http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/11929/carlos-talks-rf-trade-health-academy On the upcoming weekend meeting with Alderson: "I talked to him by phone yesterday. He gave me a call. I called him back. But, at the same time, I also talked to Jeff [Wilpon] when they acquired him. Honestly, what I'm looking forward to is to meeting and talking to him. Probably we're going to talk about baseball, for sure. We're going to talk about the Mets. We're going to talk about the team. I just can't tell you what we're going to [specifically] talk about because, first of all, I need to hear it from him." On his no-trade clause: "First of all, the process will be, when they approach me, I have to call my agent, call Scott [boras]. I have to listen. I know that I have the no-trade clause, but if the team is searching or looking to trade a guy, I have to listen. I want to be a Met. I want to finish my career with the Mets. Right now, my mentality is just to come back next year 100 percent to help this team win a championship. But, at the same time, if the organization is looking at different options, I have to be aware. I'm a professional. I know the organization, they're professionals. So if the situation comes between them and us, we're going to handle it in a very professional way." More good stuff at the link.
  9. The one name that I really find odd as a finalist is Wakamatsu. His tenure in Seattle (one successful year followed by a terrible year) was not overwhelming.
  10. Wonder if he and Doc got that beer.
  11. metirish wrote: Backman called back for second interview says Heyman, his take, Alderson appeasing fans and the Wilpon's. Who are these fans and how many are there?, nothing more than a media myth. I don't know. I think you appease the fans and owner by bringing him in once. Wally must have done something to have left an impression.
  12. I know, shame on me for even listening. But I was hoping someone, anyone, would call in and confront them.
  13. Boomer and Carton on WFAN absolutely embarassing themselves this morning with their ignorant defense of Jeter's win. "He had the best fielding percentage and the fewest errors." That's an exact quote from Carton. They also threw in a complaint about the "bloggers" who worry about range, etc.
  14. You were ok with the other three, stretching a bit on the Thole one.
  15. No Berman, please.
  16. I like the team of Dan Schulman and Orel Hershiser. I actually think Schulman is the best PBP guy ESPN has (on NBA, College hoops and baseball).
  17. Farmer Ted wrote: I'm still stuck on Billy Beane and his Moneyball theory about stolen bases, essentially the SB is too risky and should never be attempted. If Sandy is also an advocate of this style, it doesn't bode well for Wally who would likely implore an aggressive style on the basepaths. Sandy's best Oakland teams had Ricky Henderson, so he can't totally be against the SB.
  18. Concepcion's candidacy would seem to be strengthened by the presence of former teammates Bench and Perez, and fellow good-glove SS Smith.
  19. Edgy DC wrote: Jeff's brother in Tokyo is Bruce. Their sister is Robin. They reside in Stately Wilpon Manor.

  22. Hate to say it, but you could make a decent argument for Martin as a manager (I assume he's on the ballot as a manager and not player).
  23. 1. Who will manage? COLLINS 2. Who will be replaced on the coaching staff? Everybody? HOJO and NIEMANN reassigned in organization; HALE sticks around in some capacity; ALL OTHERS GONE 3. Will the secondbaseman be an internal guy or will they look outside? INTERNAL 4. Beltran in center or right on opening day?CENTER 5. Will Reyes be extended or traded or will they allow him to play out his walk year. EXTENDED 6. Will Oliver Perez be shed? YES 7. Will this jet set scene continue, or will he be a regular in Flushing? REGULAR 8. Francisco Rodriguez? OPENING DAY CLOSER 9. Which of these semi-ripe guys gets a big opportunity out of camp: a) Lucas Duda? LF in Buffalo Fernando Martinez? Offered in trades, starts in Buffalo c) Dillon Gee CAPTURES 5TH STARTER SPOT IN CAMP d) Jenrry Mejia BUFFS e) Tejada? YES 10. Who plays Santa? BAY
  24. It is bad...but could be worse. What if he's not the only one...and he starts implicating players? Because at some point he is gonna talk.
  25. From "Infield Errors Are A Cardinal Sin", Sports Illustrated, June 13, 1983: Good thing the writer filed that story when he did. If he missed deadline, then there's no story.
