  3. that I just threw together, at least thanks to a bunch of stuff Ive stolen from the web. (I'll happily step aside if someone else is doing this) The Mets open 2011 against their division rivals the Florida Marlins. Good things are expected of the Marlins by many (SI: 88 wins!). Florida had great success against the Mets at home in 2010, winning all six bouts between the teams in South Florida. The Marlins were victorious in 12 of their 18 overall encounters with New York last season as well. This will probably be their final season at Joe Robbie Stadium/Pro Player Stadium/Pro Player Park/that Jimmy Buffet Beer Stadium/Sun Life Stadium. Fish Pitching for the weekend: Fri: Josh Johnson the staff ace, pitched to a 2.30 ERA as he won 11 games in 28 starts last year, with 186 Ks in 183 IP. One of the guys counted on to lead this Marlins resurgence (well see; I keep hearing every year about how this is the year! for Florida. Never happens). Sat: Ricky Nolasco Averaged 14 wins for the Marlins the last 3 years. So hes got that going for him. Sun: Javier Vazquez After heroically sucking for the Yanks last year (his second stint of suckiness in the Bronx), hes back in the NL where he has experienced his best success. Please note I have no proof that he was really bad for the Yankees beyond hysterical callers to sports radio telling me such. Had a great 2009 for the Braves. Lineup: 1B Gaby Sanchez. Had a pretty good year in 2010 as a rookie. Which, if you know your Marlins history, means that within 2 years he will either flame out or be traded. 2B Omar Infante. Picked up from the Braves in the off season. Did he actually make the All-Star Game last year (.321 with an OPS of .775)? First year in many that Dan Uggla will not start at 2B for the Fish. SS Hanley Ramirez. We all know Hanley. Great bat, not so great glove. 3B Donnie Murphy. But you may also see old NL East warhorses Wes Helms and Greg Dobbs get time there. LF Logan Morrison. Has a name that sounds like a douchey lacrosse player at an East coast prep school. Hit .283 in 62 games with the Fish last year. CF Chris Coghlan. Miscast as a CF (at least according to SI), the one-time ROY looks to bounce back from a disappointing 2010. RF Mike Stanton. Near the top of the great NL East Rookie Class of 2010 with Strasburg, Hayward, Davis, and I am sure I am forgetting others. Stanton had 22 bombs and an .833 OPS in close to 400 PAs last year. C John Buck. Came over from the Blue Jays in the offseason. 20 HRs and an .802 OPS (something in the water in Skydome last year?). Threw out 18 out of 65 guys attempting to steal. John Buck is a real mans name, this offsets the douchiness of Logan Morrisons name. Other guys you might need to know: Leo Nunez Should be used as the Marlins closer. Thats all you need to know, because I dont expect theyll need him this weekend. Emilio Bonifacio He fast. Had an opening day inside the park HR against the Nationals, over the head of old friend Lastings Milledge a couple years ago.

  5. Oh, Dusty, one inning into the season and you are killing me, if Gametracker on ESPN is acccurate. Down 3-0 in the bottom of the first, Stubbs leads off with a double. With Votto on deck, he has Brandon Phillips bunt Stubbs to third. A Votto SF makes it 3-1. But then Rolen walked and Bruce singled, and the inning ended with Gomes grounding out. How on earth do you bunt in the first inning with a guy already in scoring position????
  6. Werth hitting second for the Nats. Did not follow them in the spring, so this kind of surprises me.
  7. Two of my friends and I have gone in on a 15-game plan for the second year in a row. We each get "family" games and there are a few that we take in as "guy's nights." I will probably be there for 6 or 7 of those games, not sure which, though. Our "draft" is this weekend while watching the final four. My first likely game will be April 11 against Colorado.
  8. a spot in the rotation for Jon Niese, maybe?
  9. Edgy DC wrote: Big chin. Like Dudley Doo-Right-big. I would have him on the mound for any games involving the Mets All-Chin Team, with Mackey Sasser behind the plate and Jeromy Burnitz in right. Keith Miller at 2B. So, my memory of Eddie Kunz is that Keith Miller had a fantastic chin.
  10. I'm worried that Bay will have a repeat of last year, and that Dickey will NOT have a repeat of last year.
  11. I have not been following the case closely, for those that are, any thoughts on the outcome? To me, from the little I've gleaned from the coverage, the government's case doesn't seem so open and shut. I imagine that Anderson not testifying for the prosecution hurt their case, but really Kimberly Bell? Yeah, her testimony was kind of embarassing to Bonds, but helping to prove a case of perjury?

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I got it: May 10: Nats 3, Mets 2 METS 7TH: Francoeur singled to first; Barajas singled to right [Francoeur to third]; MATTHEWS BATTED FOR TAKAHASHI; Matthews struck out; Pagan reached on a fielder's choice [Francoeur out at home (pitcher to catcher to third), Barajas to second]; Castillo singled to left [barajas scored, Pagan to second]; WALKER REPLACED SLATEN (PITCHING); Reyes was called out on strikes; Mets shortstop Jose Reyes and manager Jerry Manuel ejected by HP umpire Laz Diaz; 1 R, 3 H, 0 E, 2 LOB. Nationals 2, Mets 1. That makes me the winner (I had May 12, Hahn Solo May 1) Did I forget to type 0 at the end of May 1? Damn.

  14. Third 83-79 No meaningful games in October
  15. And, Ed, they didn't boo Mark Sanchez.

  17. seawolf17 wrote: Pitched HUGE in big spots, otherwise largely worthless. One of the great Met enigmas. I look forward to him winning a Cy Young Award with Cleveland in 2016. Some not-huge moments in big spots too: 2007 final start, the first of the season-ending 3-game series with the Marlins. The division heading into the game is tied. Ollie's line: 3.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB 2008, next to last start against the Cubs at Shea (the game mostly remembered for Wright not getting Murphy in from 3rd base with nobody out): 4.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 6 BB This one infuriated me, as after Delgado hits a GS to give Mets a 5-1 lead, Ollie gave it right back. He also pitched the finale that year, and went 5.1 IP with 2 ER. Not terrible, but not huge.
  18. Willets Point wrote: I'd love to watch it end to end. Seconded. Come on SNY, there's only so many times I can watch a Damian Easley home run to win an April game against the Rockies as a "Mets Classic".
  19. Even better at the end of the piece he came up with: "One person somewhat familiar with the Mets' thinking"
  20. Did Benitez not save any games for Bobby Jones? [sorry, hte chart is for 10 or more.]
  21. Time to unfollow (or whatever you tweeters call it) manhattanmini.
  22. Just started another thread about a Harper article that suggest Luis Hernandez(!) has a shot.
  23. A typical Harper piece Lead with sky-is-falling panic (Willie Harris to second?) - check Obligatory implication that Castillo is a mopey malcontent - check Obligatory questions about Muffy's defense - check Almost entirely ignore Emaus and Turner because it might not fit the story - check I haven't really been following the "competition". Has Hernandez been suggested as a viable option anywhere else? http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/2011/03/10/2011-03-10_still_secondguessing.html?page=1
  24. I blame the other teams. How dare they make the great Yankees travel? Can these piddling teams not make a sojourn to the great Steinbrenner Field?
  25. Edgy DC wrote: HahnSolo wrote: Almost as devastating as what Jim Leyritz did to Wohlers. Denny Neagle pulled from that game after 97 pitches. A factor in why Wohlers was in there in the 8th for sure. As was the outfield ump who got in Jermaine Dye's way on the Jeter popup. But can't you let me try and make a funny without bringing reason into it?
