  1. I haven't followed the Giants all that closely this year...has Miggy Tejada really fallen that far that he's hitting 8th or 7th? In their lineup???
  2. It took until 2 months before his 8th birthday, but Little Solo finally uttered the words I dreaded hearing: "The Mets suck." It took the Paulino, Harris, Pridie nightmare to finally push him over the edge.
  3. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Ashie62 wrote: Cause it ain't Shea? I haven't heard a good "Lets Go Mets" chant since Citifield opened. I'd like them to test Ashie's theory. Knock down Citi Field and rebuild Shea. Count me among those who hate the ridiculous "hooo" that the latest generation of Mets fans have added to the "Let's Go Mets" chant.
  4. I understand the Mets cannot tell jason Bay he can't go on paternity leave, which is his right. But I would like to think that Jason Bay, after sucking for a half-year, missing a half-year, then missing the first three weeks of this season, might want to just say, OK, I'll be there for the birth, maybe miss one game, then come right back. [At the very least we know Bay would not have been pinch-hit for in the 5th inning last night]
  5. Is it his fifth year already?
  6. Edgy DC wrote: I don't know whether to wake my wife. I never dreamed I spend this moment with Wayne Hagin. This made me laugh out loud.
  7. 2 seam v. 4 seam. Thanks for the visuals. Little Solo asked me the difference the other day and I had no idea.
  8. They didn't kill Schiraldi either. He nearly went three innings, and the hardest hit ball was Carter's SF in the 8th. The Mets benefited from defensive miscues to score in both the 8th and (obviously) the 10th. As a rebuttal to Buckner regarding Stapleton, I offer games 1, 2, and 5. All Red Sox wins, all finished by Stapleton at 1B.
  9. I call hijinks on Ojeda's story. NLCS game 3 was a 12 noon Saturday start. I know its a short flight, but are we really to believe he did all that in one morning? More likely he flew down and back on the off day.
  10. The studio portion of this was on in the background at my sister's for Easter afternoon. I get Greg's point about Bream above. What's funny is that Van Slyke and Lemke had pretty long and good careers, but when I looked at the screen, I thought, who are those two guys surrounding Sid Bream? I didn't re-watch the ninth inning, but I seem to recall two things, and I wonder if they talked about either: 1. Wasn't there a batter or two that either Drabek or Belinda-or both-thought they had struck out on a close pitch? I thought there may have been some bitterness from Leyland and the Pirates about that. 2. Didn't the Braves score their first run on an absolute cannon of a shot by Ron Gant? One of those "that's gone" when it hits off the bat? I think Bonds must have been playing him on the warning track, as he casually caught the hard-hit liner at the wall.

Willets Point wrote: Considering this I think that North American sports leagues should give an award to the teams with the best regular season record that would be considered an honor equivalent to winning the post-season tournament. In baseball, this would mean that the team with the best regular season record would win the Pennant rather than the team that qualifies for the World Series. (Retrospectively, the Mets would lose their 1973 & 2000 pennants, but gain pennants for 1988 & 2006 so it's all square). I think the NHL does this. Yet there's not a single NHL player who would ever cherish that more than the Stanley Cup.

  13. It was nice meeting GFafif and LWFS for the first time. The rest? blech. And I could not believe Collins in the postgame talking about how he thought Pelf showed improvement! It was torture watching that guy.
  14. Also no YES or MSG on Dish Network. You don't get your New York Sports there.
  15. Based on Irish's clues: Rick Aguilera debuted as a Met in 1985 (involved in the Tapani, Viola trade); Felix Heredia debuted as a Met in 2005 (Stanton NYY deal). I have no idea who they pitched together with in 1999. Nor do I have a clue on the first three answers.
  16. Major League Baseball announced the move in a statement on Friday. "Major League Baseball recently notified Manny Ramirez of an issue under Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program," the statement said. "Rather than continue with the process under the Program, Ramirez has informed MLB that he is retiring as an active player. If Ramirez seeks reinstatement in the future, the process under the Drug Program will be completed. MLB will not have any further comment on this matter."
  17. I already have tix up in the Promenade. I'll try and catch up with you.
  18. I'll believe a manager using the closer in a high leverage non-ninth inning situation when I see it.
  19. I'll add to the chorus and chime in. This is a fantastic idea.
  20. It was interesting to hear Verducci talking about that 8th inning. If you take away one intentional walk, the whole 7-run outburst took only 12 pitches. Props to Alex Gonzalez (the Cub) for joining Costas, Mike Lowell, and Trader Jack in the studio, and describing what was going on.
  21. Some of the victims I read were outraged not so much by the plea but by the no jail time. This is the first I've heard Allen Watson's name in connection to Oliva. I remember meeting Oliva in 1989 when CTK was in the city playoffs at Fordham and I covered the games for the school radio station. I guess you really never know people. That CTK team was stacked with I think four guys who went D1, including Derrick Phelps, who later helped UNC win a national championship.
  22. Great work. I think Francesa hijacked Halladay section: metirish wrote: Roy Halladay - (0-0 - 1.50 era) Great pitcher , not a good pitcher , a great pitcher

  24. Brandon Lyon quickly falling on my list of favorite relievers.
  25. oops. I'll accept my stoning now.
