  1. I said before he got called up that he might be the lucky break the team desperately needs. I'm sticking with that.
  2. I guess the Dodgers chose not to offer Washington more than the draft pick was worth. But they made sure nobody else could trade for Harper either. Matt Adams is not a bad player to get for nothing. I should probably enjoy this less than I do.
  3. The shift is playing the odds. There is sufficient evidence that it lowers BABIP, at least with certain hitters. But just because it will work more often than not doesn’t mean it will always work, and it didn’t last night. I realize Smith is not an experienced outfielder, but it would be nice to get the sense that he has a clue out there.
  4. I had already assumed Nimmo was on the DL. Hopefully it’s just a ten-day thing.
  5. It's still too early to tell, but he seems to know what he's doing at the plate and he's already handled some adjustments that were made against him. As of now, I'm looking at upgrading center and catcher before second base.
  6. That totally rocked.
  7. There shouldn't be a problem with the analytics per se, but you can make the argument that Alderson was married to Moneyball 1.0 and the analytics have evolved (particularly in regard to how to pitch and defend against all-or-nothing swingers).
  8. It would be funny if Zamora winds up being a better reliever than any of the pen prospects we've picked up in deadline deals the last two seasons. So where's the thread on SUNY Brockport players?
  9. The current MLB.com headline is "Mets putting up runs in bunches." Who was expecting to see that one any time soon?
  10. So CF, can you get started on Bruce while he is still rehabbing?
  11. Not sure if there was an injury that lingered, if getting plunked like that took away his edge for a bit, or if he simply slumped. But it's moot now.
  12. Happy to see a deluge of runs. Also happy to see Sean Gilmartin is still alive.
  13. Kershaw's case is interesting. He could get five or six years, but you'd be insane to offer him anything close to the $32M per year he's currently owed over the next two seasons at this stage of his career. Not sure which way he'll go. Corbin intrigues me a lot, but this might be a bit of an obstacle: https://www.pinstripealley.com/2018/4/24/17273550/yakees-patrick-corbin-rumors-diamondbacks-free-agent-trade-pitching The defense is a concern if you go for Keuchel or Gio Gonzalez.
  14. We could use quite a few things more than we could use a left-handed corner outfielder, which is why dealing Bruce for an equivalent contract at a position of more need makes sense. Cobb has been pitching much better lately, in one of the worst places in all of baseball to pitch (i.e., a hitter's park where you regularly face the Yankees and Red Sox). We certainly wouldn't rather have Vargas. Plus, I trust Callaway to handle starting pitchers. Anything more than one year and $5M for Harvey would be insanity. Melancon is recovering from an injury that shelved him for a full year. He's not all the way back. But 20 innings is far too small a sample size to write him off.
  15. The worst-case scenario is nothing. The best case scenario is that we add a good player who is already paid for. So what if the worst-case scenario is much more likely? We've already been dealing with it for the past two years.
  16. OK thanks. I saw the boxscore line show one pitch and nothing else, and I was worried about a blown elbow.
  17. What happened to Blevins?
  18. The Phillies get Justin Bour from the Marlins for a C-grade prospect. The Phillies get bench depth for approximately nothing. The Marlins trade a guy who had a .902 OPS last year, and would probably cost less than $6M after arbitration next season, for approximately nothing. Hell, I'd have made this deal (the Mets would have had waiver priority over the Phillies but didn't put in a claim). If Alonso is ready in the spring, we could simply move Bour along for a profit (which would not be hard). The good news is we are not the worst-run organization in baseball.
  19. Things are looking up. MLB.com's mid-season list has four Mets in the top 100, with a fifth (Kilome) who was on the list in the offseason. That's at least average. A few guys have gotten hurt and/or taken steps backward, but every organization has them. Most teams don't have a Jeff McNeil going from completely overlooked prospect to major league starter in half a season. It's a lot more positive than people realize.
  20. But I bet they have an insurance policy on Ellsbury, too.
  21. Nimmo hasn't been right since the game the Dodgers kept plunking him. It could have affected his approach, or he could be dealing with a lingering injury. Or both. But it would be nice to see him snap out of it.
  22. Is Jackson under our control for next year? The Giants signed him for two years, but then traded him to the Rangers who released him. We picked him up for the minimum, but doesn't that only apply for the rest of the season? OK, so if Blevins was available to pitch the ninth, why didn't he face Votto and Gennett with the bases loaded in the seventh? Blevins is (finally) pitching well enough to be dealable.
  23. On the mildly annoying front, after not finishing seven innings once for the Twins, Lance Lynn goes 7.1 shutout innings in his first Yankee start. Yankees pitching coach: "You see Lance, they key is to throw more strikes." Lance Lynn: "Wow, strikes? Why didn't I think of that before?"

And it'll be fun. They'll be playing great, doing all the things great teams do. It might not be a true representation of their 162 game talent, but who cares? that's arbitrary. The 1973 Mets mostly did just that.
