  1. Stroman replaced Jason Vargas. We still have one more slot to fill. Wheeler is the kind of player who should take the QO if he's offered it. If I were in on Cole (which I would be), I wouldn't risk spending $19M where I don't want to spend it (and maintain a status quo that isn't good enough).

Mickey I feel was sorta left to twist a bit by the administration, tried to carry out the directives but never really found a comfortable footing. And the Diaz-Familia failures really doomed him. Beyond that both his teams really underachieved in the early going, I think partially because they were underprepared, and he couldn't pull either one out nearly in time, and that's on him. My feeling is its such now that you can't craft a Diaz-Familia comeback that includes Mickey, or a complete picture of the Brodie Era Mets without him naming his own field general. I think its possible that a club like Pittsburgh or Kansas City could get a chastened and more wisdom-infused Mickey to be their manager and be successful. That's a very reasonable assessment. Personally I was willing to defend Callaway until he threatened a reporter.
  3. Super Joe had a couple of good months with the bat in the summer of 2001, but was otherwise the poster boy for why a guy who plays multiple positions isn't all that valuable if he also hits worse than your pitchers. Plus he made the Mets think that Melvin Mora was expendable. I'd be curious to know how Maddon and Chili Davis got along. At this point I'm inclined to think that they both were scapegoated for the troubles of a team that passed its peak.
  4. I think we're all in agreement that there is no point in simply dumping him. You have to hope he can fix his slider, and I agree with those of you who said that a third pitch wouldn't hurt. So hold on to him, but be proactive and don't just hope his issues go away on their own.
  5. Replacing Wheeler with Gerrit Cole would be a nice start. It's tough to tell what to do with the lineup, when the position most in need of help (second base) already has $30M committed to two players. Real centerfielders are very hard to come by right now, unfortunately, but I would be willing to part with Conforto to get one. Rosario improved with bat and glove as the season moved on; simply picking up where he left off would bounce our defense up quite a bit. I guess the hardest question is do you trade offense for defense behind the plate. As for the pen? Well we've already seen that going all-in on relief pitchers is high risk, low reward. I think you have to hope that Diaz and Familia remember how to pitch, because there is no point getting pennies on the dollar for them. And then, you try to find the guy who's being undervalued.
  6. At this point I'm holding on until the math makes it official.
  7. So you're saying we've still got a shot?
  8. McNeil hasn't really been right since he came back from the injury. Hopefully he'll get his groove back quickly.
  9. Diaz and Familia are running the falafel cart outside.
  10. Was McNeil not hot enough that he's sitting today?
  11. It was a different era. But a 1.12 ERA in over 300 innings is ridiculous in any era.
  12. My wife is already in bed. And my friend who's into Nordic heavy metal is attending a Nordic heavy metal concert.
  13. There was a thread here a couple of months ago about an article stating how Citi was killing the Mets with no obvious explanation for it -- even though the article itself said that the Mets were putting the ball in the air more than any other team in the NL (mostly by design), and playing home games in the park that was least likely to reward putting the ball in the air (also mostly by design). We haven't cured all of our offensive woes, but at least we seem to have taken "comically self-defeating philosophy" out of the equation.
  14. That looks like fun.
  15. Of course not; he'd have to pay for them.

  17. Just watched the error on replay. Isn't the catcher supposed to follow up the line on a play like that? (And isn't he supposed to catch the ball to prevent the third run from scoring?)
  18. I don't know if he is an improvement over Hech, but I don't think he makes the team worse either. Guillorme had a .412 OBP at Syracuse; I bet he could turn things around at this level if given more of a chance.
  19. So sad that he'll be denied by a squirrel.
  20. Holland was super the first two and a half months of the season. I would definitely check if it's an injury issue or if it's just a fixable mechanical issue.
  21. Edgy MD wrote: But now, they look like a more-or-less complete lineup out there despite missing Céspedes, Nimmo, Canó, Lowrie, McNeil, and Smitty. Obviously not Cespedes (and not counting McNeil), but do you think we'll see any of the rest of those guys before the end of the season? They're running out of opportunities for rehab games. Smitty and Nimmo had ETAs within August at last check, but I'm not promising anything. Cano I think is done, which is a blessing in disguise if you look at the whole season and a bad thing if you look post-ASB. Anything we get from Lowrie at this point is a bonus.
  22. =Centerfield post_id=17818 time=1565098451 user_id=65] *Justin Wilson pitching better than he is over this stretch
  23. Agreed on Rosario. But the starting pitchers have all dialed it up a notch, and it starts with that.
  24. He's getting pitched to more carefully, which is a natural consequence of his performance in the first half (and, to some degree, the weakness of the Mets' hitters behind him). He's a rookie who needs to adjust as the league adjusts to him. I'm not concerned long-term. It was perfectly reasonable to expect stretches like this one, well before he started exceeding reasonable expectations with his first-half hitting.
  25. And they haven't gotten better with the rest of the staff, either.
