  1. As bad as he's looked at times, Alonso's OPS is .808, and there are two Met regulars with an OPS under .600 -- one of whom also recently made a defensive gaffe that turned a sure out into a game-ending run. Alonso has not hurt the Mets more than any of our other batters. As a firm believer in selling high, I'd be curious to see if anybody is interested in Cano and his contract. The last time he played close to a full season with an OPS over .800 was 2016, and he's not getting younger. It's not clear at all that he can still hit at an elite level for long stretches. But I'm also OK with riding the hot hand in the meantime.
  2. Hamilton should not be on the roster tomorrow. He does not have the luxury of running into bad outs, because his speed is his only skill.
  3. I'm really starting to like Luis Guillorme.
  4. I was going to say Lockett faced one batter too many, but he's still out there. Don't we have ten relievers?
  5. The shift keeps the Phillies from turning two.
  6. Like seeing Dom work a walk against a lefty.
  7. Jay Bruce's double helps my ottoneu team. And his boneheaded baserunning helps the Mets.
  8. So I see I would be the fifth person to think that. (Six if we include Gary.)
  9. How about Jesse Orosco at #8?
  10. Bobby Ojeda is #10.
  11. As much as I agree that the rotation is the bigger mess right now, I'm with ashie on this. I'd say re-recall Franklyn Kilome and milk the ten relievers for all they're worth.
  12. No point in bailing on the season when you're half a game out of the last wildcard spot. I thought Stroman was worth the gamble; he had a good resumé in the toughest division in baseball, and he did help the Mets get back in it last year. But circumstances conspired against it working out. I don't fault Brodie for that, although thinking that they didn't need to at least break even on Wheeler was a huge mistake. Stroman said all the right things, but of course he'll go to the team that opens their wallet the widest.
  13. He was hitting .161, with 15 Ks in 31 ABs. There are reasons to give a guy hitting .161 the day off that have nothing to do with money, especially when the guy just returned from a two-year injury holiday and is clearly not all the way back. But hey, if his attitude was getting in the way, it's addition by subtraction.
  14. What replay did the replay booth watch?
  15. I hope Chasen Shreve has a few more innings like that to give us this season.
  16. That is my anniversary, alas. But is sounds like a super idea.
  17. Pedro's 291 ERA+ is, well, ridiculous (Gooden's 85 was 229, and Gibson's 68 was 258). But starting pitchers were being asked to do less in 2000 compared to the 80s (when starters were doing less than in Gibson's era -- Gibson's 1.12 ERA came over 304 innings). I think you have to take the demands placed on starting pitchers into account. Here's some interesting number play, multiplying IP by ERA+ and dividing by 100: Gooden 632 Martinez 631
  18. You do have to take Doc's 276 innings to Pedro's 217 into consideration.
  19. =MFS62 post_id=39531 time=1593454745 user_id=60] The Melk Man delivers (ducking) Later
  20. You can't have too much bullpen depth. Strickland has been wildly inconsistent, but he's had some very good stretches too. I got no problem taking a flyer and seeing what happens.
  21. Of course, the presence or absence of a DH will have zero bearing on a team's overall payroll. So you give up the DH in exchange for 20 more games, and baseball is saved from Manfred for another year.
  22. In other words, the owners won't bargain with the players unless the players toss out all of their bargaining leverage.
  23. The article seems to focus on him not being welcomed with open arms, while overlooking that he was at least as hyped a prospect as Strawberry (who was not resented, to the best of my knowledge) and more hyped than Gooden (who was also not resented). People would have forgiven him for being a jerk -- Jesus, look at his Mets' teammates -- if he had been the star we had all been assured he would be. But he was an underachieving jerk, and they're the worst kind.
  24. I watched Breaking Away but don't remember it. I was just the right age for The Bad News Bears, much like I was just the right age for Star Wars. It's always been a favorite of mine. It got even better as I played Little League.
  25. Howe was put in a situation where success was impossible. Compare that to Randolph, who was put in a situation where success was almost unavoidable, but he still managed to avoid it in 07 and 08. I've always felt bad for Howe, and I'm sorry that he's sick now.
