  1. Yes, Willie got a vote. This just in: That voter is now under a Doctor's care and is being heavily sedated. We fervently hope that by next year, the voter will be well enough to actually watch a Mets game that Willie manages. Later
  2. AL- Guillen NL - Cox No surprises. No disagreement here. Considering what Cox had to work with - an injury depleted team - he did a masterful job. Later
  3. Looks like he found better control. Later
  4. Edgy DC wrote: Somewhere on the internet, I'm sure there's a calculator to convert Japan League production into its Major League equivelent. . I saw one a few years ago. It may have been a Baseball Prospectus premium piece. IIRC the factor they mentioned for projecting major league performance from Japanses league data was either 83 or 86%. It may be adequate for projecting batting average. But after seeing what some imports have done, especially Hidecki Matsui, I wouldn't trust it in projecting home run numbers. Later

  8. Edgy DC wrote:So, Kaz can veto deals?I believe I've read that his contract contains a list of three cities to which he would accept a trade. Two were Seattle and SF. Don't recall the third, but from the first two I'd guess LA, another city with a large Japanese-American population. But I'd guess clauses like that can be overcome if some additional money were offered. No examples immediately come to mind.Later
  9. The Many rumor came up again this morning, along with my breakfast, when I was listening to the 20-20 update on ESPN Radio. The announcer said there is talk about a "3 team deal that would bring Manny to the Mets". But then he gave no details. Has anyone else heard or read the details of this rumored deal? Later
  10. Detroit apparently has their own version of John Heyman and Joel Sherman when it comes to talkin' trades.http://www.detnews.com/2005/tigers/0511/09/D01-376808.htmPudge for Kaz?I can just see Kaz approving a trade to the Motor City. and Pudge has a no-trade clause in his contract. Then why bother writing it?Later
  11. My wife went to James Monroe High School with Ed. I'll let her know. She may want to have a special celebration in his honor. Later

  13. So he's learning English? So what if he doesn't speak it well? Neither did Casey Stengel and Yogi Berra. How many words does he have to learn? one -fastball two - curve three - slider four - change brushback cut (the ball off on a throw coming home) mine (on a bunt or popup) and get the ball over the #%&% plate. He should be able to get those down by spring training I'm more concerned on reports in some recent stories about him that he was injured last year. I haven't been able to find out the nature of those injuries. If they were the kind that indicate "wear and tear" on a catcher I'd be wary. But if they were accident related (plate collision or off field) that can heal well, he's worth a shot. Later

  18. Zvon wrote: You guys can use all the math and strut all the stats you want. What Im saying is we need a 'pitchers' catcher as opposed to a slugging catcher, and that Jacobs should play first base. I agree with your last statement. And I find it refreshing that you consider me a "numbers guy" because I usually am not. But I provided some numbers I remembered to the discussion just because I happened to recall them. Later
  19. ="Edgy DC"]The Mets could just dig up some corpse parts out at Calvary Cemetary and build their own Joey Eischen. Igor just informed me that even he wouldn't want to dig up something that looks like that. Later

B'sides, I'm not sure the MLBPA would be too thrilled about it, considering the way those international sports governing bodies impose tough testing and penalties for substance abuse. Later
  21. I remember when the incident was first reported. I also remember when there were stories about the Mets being interested in acquiring UUU. They said he was a flamethrower, but I don't think this was what they meant. Later
  22. Edgy DC wrote: 1) It's not important. Just worthy of note in passing. Because much is publicized about the changing demographics of the league and it's stars. This is one unscientific way of observing which way the league is going demographically. I won year one on the considerable high heels of Donna Summer, and the flat heels of Suzanne Vega and Patty Smith. 1) That's what I thought. The change in demographics is interesting, isn't it? 2) Nice imagery. Thanks, Later
  23. Edgy, why do you think the number (or percentage) of Latin American players was important? Is this from the other thread where it was brought out that 9% of major leaguers are African-American? Or is it just an observation? On quick inspection, it seems that most of the songs parodied in our contests over the years were based on songs originally recorded by White Males. Do you think it make a difference in the way the CPF-ers voted when those songs were up against songs originally recorded by African-Americans or women? Later
