Speakng of shots that hit something and stayed in the park brings to mind a game at Ebbets Field - Bums against the Reds. If you never saw Ebbets, it was a flip-flopped Fenway, with the high wall in right. (Remember, Mole?) There was a high scoreboard amidst that wall, with a clock on top. Muscular first baseman Ted Kluszewski of the Reds hit a shot that hit the middle of the wire mesh in front of the clock. The ball went through the protective mesh and hit the clock in the center where the hands met. The hands started going around and around. It was very impressive. It was one of the few times I remember the Brooklyn fans being quiet. The final score for balls hit that day was: Clock 1 Abe Stark Suits 0. Later

From the Seattle Paper: Mariners club attorney Bart Waldman leaves today for the 55-and-over Roy Hobbs World Series in Ft. Myers, Fla. Waldman, 57, will pitch Sunday for the Puget Sound-area Washington Titans. Waldman's batterymate is none other than John Olerud Sr. ... Hey, I wonder if he can hit like his kid? A source said Friday that the Mariners are close to signing Jojima to a two-year contract worth about $8 million with an option for a third season. The 29-year-old Jojima was in Seattle on Friday, although he wasn�t accompanied by his agent, Alan Nero." Its not a done deal. In another thread, several CPF-ers mentioned that they were at the game when Piazza hit a long game winning home run against the Yankees. What was the longest home run you've seen in person? What were some of the details you remember from the game? The longest I ever saw was one Frank Howard hit over the left centerfield light tower at the Polo Grounds. IIRC he he hit it off Craig Anderson. It was in 1962. The longest one I saw actually land was hit by Tim Harkness of lefty reliever Jim Brewer of LA. It was a game winner (they didn't call them "walk off" homers in those days) in the 14th inning, and went into the upper deck in right center field at the Polo Grounds. Later

from espn: TOKYO -- Bobby Valentine is so popular in Japan that he now has a beer named after him. To commemorate Valentine guiding the Chiba Lotte Marines to their first Japan Series title in 31 years last month, Sapporo Breweries Ltd. has come out with BoBeer, a special version of its popular Black Label lager that's available only in Chiba. The can features a cartoon likeness of Valentine giving a thumbs-up and saying "We're No. 1." Valentine's Pacific League champion Marines swept the Central League champion Hanshin Tigers in the Japan Series last month. The Marines have offered Valentine a new three-year contract. While he has yet to sign, Valentine said Thursday he was very pleased with the terms offered. Good point about the non-English speaking pitchers. And I just remembered reading that English is a mandatory subject in schools in Japan. Maybe the classes he's been taking the past two years are just a refresher. He's supposely a good catch and throw guy, with some pop in his bat. And he's 3 or 4 years younger than Molina. IMO he's worth a good hard looksie. Later

A week ago or so, it was announced that Detroit sent Toronto an undisclosed amount of cash to complete the trade of "future considerations" for John MacDonald earlier this year. Today on the transaction wire: "Toronto acquired infielder John MacDonald from the Detroit Tigers for cash considerations" A "player traded (actually sold) for himself" kind of deal first accomplished by the Mets for Harry Chitti. Mets were years ahead of the rest of the league. Later

That standard clause allowing a player to opt for free agency if traded mid-contract bothers me. What if the Mets give up the store for Manny, and at the end of next year, he decides he wants out? His volatile personality makes that a possibility. So if they get him, I hope they don't give up too much for him. LAter -
But this may be a unique situation. His suspension doesn't stsrt until the first 10 games of next season, so he's no "oficially" suspended until then. It could have roster implications when the Mets have to protect some youngsters from the Rule V Draft. That's why I asked. Later

Does a player on drug suspension qualify for the Grant Roberts Memorial Roster Spot? Nahhh, maybe not. But seriously, does that player count against the 40 man roster? Can they release the player while on suspension? I have no answers to those questions. Anybody know? Later

He may be more of a LOOGY, but the Mets signed Matt Pershio. ] Former Marlin Matt Perisho agreed to terms with the New York Mets on a split minor league, major-league contract that includes an invitation to big-league spring training in February.
