If the Mets do go out and get a premier closer, at least I am now much more comfortable that he will have more late inning leads to protect. Delgado will be a dynamic presence in the lineup. Later

Copied from my reply on this topic in the hot stove thread: Now I understand why my friend the Chisox fan told me they had interest in acquiring Juan Pierre. I couldn't see how they could have both Rowand AND Pierre in the same lineup. The GO-GO Sox were so forty-five years ago. Later

HappyRecap wrote: Shea is not a hitters ballpark. Um, nope. That's one of the things you hear often, but are not quite true. The last couple of years, Shea has been playing as an almost hitters neutral ballpark - overall (I think it was something like a .99, with average being 1.00). But that is on average. For lefty hitters, its had recently been a +1.20, because of the prevailing winds toward right field. The reason this hasn't been so obvious is because the Mets recently had a lefty power hitter to take advantage of it. Carlos should do just fine in Shea. Later

Speaking of Pete: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AiGTDLSmNXPPRaLOw4ZyB.wRvLYF?slug=ap-halloffame-rose&prov=ap&type=lgns the article indicates that he won't be going into the Hall under a Selig regime. But the "special election" for Minoso, et al, might start us down a slippery slope. A future Commissioner could have a similar, single purpose, special election with Pete as the sole candidate. Later

Manny to Mets Rumors Rear Their Hideous Heads . . . Again
MFS62 replied to a topic in New York Mets Talk
Here's a link to his comments from a Spanish newspaper. http://www.elheraldo.com.co/hoy051122/deportes/noti4.htm Looks like Fox did a direct translation. But there have been reports (can't find the specific link) that Manny recently told Ortiz that he wants to go to an American League team on the West coast (Angels?) where he could spend some time at DH. IMO, this has implications for the Mets. The Angels had been mentioned as a possible suitor, and the Mets major competition, for Delgado. If the Angels get Manny, the odds are they won't have money to pay Carlos. This could mean Delgado becomes a Met. Yes, its premature, and speculative, but its a slow day at work. Later -

If this thread is about possible bench players, did anyone else notice that old friend Todd Pratt is a free agent? Why spend big bucks on a free agent catcher when a lower cost alternative would be to give Castro most of the starts? Considering his fewer at bats, his numbers weren't significantly different than the two high priced spreads. And Todd could be a more than adequate fill in when Castro rests and a decent righty pinch hitter when he doesn't. Thoughts? Later

Edgy, You were 14 and could recognize a Bergman spoof? Impressive. When I read your post I did think you were joking, so I obviously can't help you out with the name of that movie. Sorry, Later

Steve If Edgy decides to so name that spot, I would hope that it would be retired after Glavine leaves and not become a permanant slot on the Mets roster. Why should the Mets be looking at pitchers that old as a permanent fixture on their staff? EDIT" Self and Concepcion were removed from the roster last week. Later

Castillo is a speed player who is approaching the age when speed starts to decline (unless your name is Ricky Henderson). I'd tread carefully. Later

Every so often, I try to go into my brain and try to erase unpleasant memories. That must be what happeend to my recollection of "Son of Kong". Yep, Yancy, I posted the programming alert just for you. I remembered last year's post about your love for the big fella'. Later

Speaking of things we used to enjoy, Remember on Thanksgiving Day when Million Dollar Movie (NY channel 9) used to telecast "King Kong" and "Mighty Joe Young" (the originals) back-to-back? Well, this year, "King Kong" will be telecast Tuesday night (check your local listings). But, never fear, football avoiders. "Miracle on 34th Street" will be telecast Thanksgiving Day. sigh Later

I knew you were joking when you said that Carl Pohlad wouldn't spend money. Of course he will! He will take their portion of luxury tax money they receive and hand out large bonuses (boni?) to the front office staff. Some of that stuff isn't as outrageous as you may think. Later

TheOldMole wrote: MFS -- ever listen to Long John Nebel, the godfather of all talk radio? Yes I did, but have no real memories of his show. And my folks loved John Gambling. I liked the radio mysteries and "action" shows. Wasn't much into the "daytime dramas" like Stella Dallas and Grand Central Station. But for music, who could beat William B. Williams' "Make Believe Ballroom"? And for politics and other current stuff, Barry Farber. I was a caller to early sportstalk - Art Rust Jr. and Bill Maser, of course. They were still better than anyone doing that today. I liked the way they would let you talk to their guests. The last (and maybe only) one who did that on WFAN was Ann Liguori. And who had FM? What about you? Later

Yes, I remember. I was one of many of our generation who went to sleep with the transistor radio under our pillows listening to his radio show. I remember when he won the Playboy humor award one year. Read the books, saw the movies, saw him at the nightclub in the Village, and even caught him when he came to speak at CCNY. Thanks, Later

Edgy, saw this posted on NYFO. No link provided: Added pitchers Brian Bannister, Anderson Garcia, Henry Owens, Yusmeiro Petit and Juan Perez to the 40-man roster; sent outright outfielders Ambiorix Concepcion and Todd Self to Norlfolk of the International League (AAA). Juan Perez is a 27 year old lefty reliever who pitched for Pawtucket last season. But who is Henry Owens? Later

I guess its time to admit I was wrong. When he was signed last year, I posted that it was a mistake. But his play this year turned me into a fan of his. Bye, Marlon, I'll miss ya'. Later
