  1. I duly noted his acquisition in the 40-man roster thread. But do we know if he was signed directly to a minor league contract, or added to the 40 man and then optioned out? Those career numbers look pretty decent for a 27 year old lefty. After all, "lefties develop later". Later
  2. Edgy, announced at the end of the post game radio show: ]The New York Mets today acquired lefthanded pitcher Dave Williams from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for minor league righthanded pitcher Robert Manuel. Williams, 27, was acquired by the Cincinnati Reds in the off-season from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Sean Casey and cash. In eight starts with Cincinnati this season, Williams was 2-3 with a 7.20 ERA. In 40.0 innings, he allowed 54 hits, 34 runs, 32 earned, with 16 walks and 16 strikeouts. On May 20th, in his fifth season in the majors, Williams was designated for assignment. Doesn't say anything about whether he has been added to the 40 man roster. But if he was DFAd that many days ago, he's already passed through waivers and can probably be sent directly to Norfolk without having to be added to the 40-man. Later

  4. Jeremi DFA'd already? Did they let him take a shower before they pushed him out the door? Later
  5. If they bring in Cormier and he gets his third career save against the Mets, VS 0-30 in save opportunities against all other teams combined, I'm gonna' have a stroke. (you might never see me) Later

Heilman may not be available today. How many games in a row can he pitch, especially since some of them were more than one inning? Later
  8. 88, not a bad idea. His funky delivery and funky stuff would be a change in "look" from whatever pitcher he replaces. He might be effective once through a batting order. IIRC he was effective in that role for the Chisox. Later
  9. I wonder what he feeds his gopher. Later
  10. When he loaded the bases with nobody out, I had a Koosman Karma flashback. That's what Jerry did in his first major league start (against SF). But he got out of the inning with no runs scored. But other than minor details, we're dealing with karma here, so I'd answer "hell yeah, I'm excited about him." He looks like he knows how to pitch and doesn't get rattled. Later
  11. With Jeremi on the mound, something tells me I'd rather have Chavez' defense in the outfield rather than Nady's offense in the lineup. (Although a case can be made that Nady is taller, and might be able to catch balls headed over the fence.) Later

    Beautiful!

Wasn't Edward Valella from New York too? If not born here, it seems he was a long time resident. While Jacques' style was pure grace, I remember Valella's style being a combination of grace and power. He had the body of a middleweight fighter. Later

  18. When Joe Lewis was defending his Heavyweight boxing championship, they said his opponents were members of the Bum of the Month Club. I think Omar remembered that concept when trying to find a fourth and fifth starter. Oh well, let's see what this one can do. At least they dumped some salary by making this move. Later

    Beautiful!

I remember reading an article many years ago in which the author compared the beauty and complexity of a second baseman making a pivot on a double play with some complex ballet moves. This author obviously interviewed heathens, who chose not to include any examples of baseball in their research or discussions. Later
  20. So, the off season trade actually works out to be: Kris & Anna Benson for El Duque & Maine & about $3.5 mil for 2006 and $8.0 mil for 2007. This gives them some additional financial flexibility come trading deadline. Later
  21. The idea of a breakout of catcher tag putouts is something I've wondered about in the past. They just get lumped in with putouts as a result of strikeouts and catching popups. The assignment of the error on a home plate tag borders on the mystical, too. Sometimes the scorer (or the tv replay) really can't tell if it was a result of a bad hop on the throw home. Later
  22. I have always attributed the booing of Bonilla to the self-inflicted myopia of Mike and Mad Dog. At the time he was signed to his first contract with the Mets, M&MD were renegotiating the first extension of their contracts. (IIRC they both signed for somewhere around $600K per year). But in their own self-serving way, they kept hammering on Bonilla's contract of $29 million over several years. When he signed the contract, Bobby kept saying that he was what he was, and the fans could expect he would produce the numbers they saw on the back of his baseball card. (.280 -25-85) And his annual salary (about $6 million per year) wasn't that far out of line, maybe a tad higher, with what other "stars" were getting at the time. But that didn't stop M&MD from always referring to him as the "29 Million dollar man", making it sound like that was his annual salary. All that did was pour JP-4 on the fire. That rhetoric whipped Mets fans into a frenzy. They made the fans think that in order to earn that salary, Bobby had to deliver like the second coming of Mickey Mantle. And when he didn't the boos started cascading down from the stands. Bobby delivered as promised. His numbers were very similar to "the back of his card". And, looking back, except for one fly ball to right center that he appeared to dog it going after, Bobby hustled during the duration of that contract. Later

  24. I've been saying since the starters started going down that Feliciano has shown in the past that he can give you some pretty decent innings. I think he's been wasted as a LOOGY. Give the guy a shot, Willie, if all else fails. Later
