  1. Good job, Monk, but you forgot those two kid lefty starters LA threw at the Mets. Later
  2. Thanks, Later
  3. The guy who covers sports media for the Daily News had a fun article about Gary Cohen today. Unfortunately, my local LAN speed is turgid today, and I can't get the daily news site to download/open. If someone has better luck geting to the article, can they please post it? Thanks, Later

  5. Thank you. I stand corrected. That is a good mission and those seem like good programs in support of that mission. Its a far cry from when footballer Lawrence Taylor stood in front of an assembly at an inner-city (Newark, NJ) high school and said "I'm not going to tell you not to take drugs". Later
  6. RANT ALERT. Just now, on ESPN II, a Movado Watch commercial came on. The announcer started (in a rich stentorian voice): Derek Jeter Ballplayer HUMANITARIAN yadda yadda (I had stopped listening) Humanitarian? Has he been nominated for a Nobel Prize? Has he cured some disease? Has he donated billions to charity? Or does an athlete earn that by visiting some kids in a foundling home? Gimmie a break. Anybody know what he's done to deserve that? Later
  7. Why? What did the book say that makes you think that? Later
  8. I remember hearing his first victory - against Whitey Ford and the Yanks - on the radio. I caught the end of the game after school. Later
  9. Tomorrow night will be his last game as an announcer. He will retire after the Yanks/Red Sox game. He was a very good pitcher and has been a fair and honest sportscaster. He served as a great counterpoint to the rest of the Yankee crew. If you have a chance to tune in and listen to him one last time, do it. Later
  10. Does giving up four runs in six innings, but only three of them earned, qualify as a "quality start"? Later
  11. Maybe they feel that game will mark the return of Pedro Martinez, who they must feel is a national draw. Or, they're betting that the Mets may not have clinched it by then. Later

    Critics

Edgy DC wrote: I think critics have been generally back and forth on Andrew Lloyd Weber most of his career. I didn't realize that. Do we get the shows in New York that the London critics have already "screened out"? Then, substitute Rogers and Hammerstein for Webber in my first post. Later
  13. I'm interested in reading what our members who have experience in the entertainment industry have to say about this, but others please feel free to provide your opinions, too. Basic Question: Do film and theater critics change their mind about someone? To clarify when I mean by that, I have a few examples I'd like to expand upon. Andrew Lloyd Weber. He has a track record of writing critically acclaimed shows. But if he were to come up with a real stinker, how would the critics react? Would they be kind and say something kind, like "The proven formula at work again"? Would they give him the benefit of the doubt and say something like "Not up to his usual standard"? Or would they say something like "He hit a clinker"? Are critics in general reticent to say the "emperor" (someone with an established track record of good reviews) is now standing there butt nekked? If another critic says it, are the others fast followers? Or do they think a negative revue says that they might have been wrong about the artist in the past? In the other extreme, we have Ed Wood. If, after a long series of bad movies, he had created a true cinematic masterpiece, how do you think the critics would have reacted? Would they have given it the rave review it deserved? Would they have toned down their praise by saying something like "It was better than his previous efforts"? Would they have trivialized it in their review? I know we can't generalize, but IMO established critics tend to generally agree in the way they evaluate offerings. Finally, would theater and movie critics react the same way in the examples I gave? Which group would be more likely to tell it like it is? Some insight please. Later

  16. Do we now have to thank the Phillies for taking two because the Mets won't clinch on an off day? Later
  17. You should both be proud - for wanting it and for doing it. Good stuff all around. Later

  20. And Ron Swoboda had a Chinese grandfather. His widowed grandmother got a job in a Chinese restaurant and eventually married the owner. Later
  21. Like Major League Baseball, separate trophies should be handed out for regular and post season accomplishments. I'm just unsure about how one very hot game in a short series might skew results. Later
