Many of us have commented this off season about the contracts being signed by free agents. Its like they're playing with Monopoly money. Two years ago, Selig was before Congress pleading poverty - saying that most of the teams were losing money. (There was a supporting spreadsheet printed in USA Today - but I haven't been able to locate it since then.) Where did all the new money come from? The new tv contract? They had it all along in a little tin box? Or have they just said "I don't care about the luxury tax?" Thoughts? Later

WP, do you check out Canadian sports sites on a regular basis? What have they been saying about the Vernon Wells contract? Will he be paid in US dollars or Canadian? Haven't seen that specified in any of the reports in the US coverage of his contract. Later

83 got me thinking: ]why only post all-star? if its because you believe the MVP is the guy who helped histeam down the stretch then you should eliminate players on bad teams and teams that coasted. A few years ago(2? 3?), when The Yankees jumped out to a huge lead early in the season, Sheffield and Giambi were hurt, and many of the other regulars got off to slow starts. But Hidecki Matsui carried the team on his back until the others got better/ returned. Toward the end of the season, he wore down (and still finished with very good stats) and Sheffield got hot to overtake Matsui in overall numbers. But the team coasted, and its big lead even declined by year's end. Come voting time, the voters picked Sheffield over Matsui, but if he hadn't done what he did and when he did it, the Yanks might not have won their division. And if you had watched that team throughout the entire season, there should have been no doubt as to which player was more valuable to the overall success of the team. Just saying that to me, sometimes the when is the most important thing to be considered. Later

Thank you. I agree with thon's comment on range factor. On a team like the '86 Mets, with a lot of strikeout pitchers (Doc, etc) and a "fly ball" pitcher (El Sid) I can see how range factor figures might be effected. Later

I've never liked VORP because it rates the difference between the player being rated and some mysterious "average replacement player". But it says nothing about the impact on that player's team in real life. On a really deep team, the substitute player on that team may be (almost as) as good as the the player being rated. I spoke to a guy today named Pacella. I asked him if he was related to the ex-Met pitcher John Pacella. He said John was his cousin, and that he and his dad used to go to Mets games using tickets provided by John. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/P/John-Pacella.shtml I asked what John was doing these days. The guy told me that John, after leaving the majors, played in Japan for the Tokyo Giants for a few years. He returned to the states and is now in "Real Estate". I forgot to ask where. Later

He was the best all-around catching prospect the Mets have had since Todd Hundley. I had felt his upside was higher than a Benji Molina. I guess the comparison to Roberto Hernandez in the blurb is more like what I was thinking of. He is an excellent defensive catcher with good power. This really pisses me off. Later
