I heard on the radio the other day that one of the Chicago voters, Joe Cowely (it could have been Crowley, so I'm not sure if it is the ex-MLB pitcher), is an admitted "homer" and has an admitted anti- New York bias. So, when it came time for him to vote, he put Jeter as his #6. Later

  3. Thanks for posting the recap, Thon. Looks like you're on a hot streak. Can I call you before my next trip to Las Vegas? Later
  4. Everybody's favorite - Rod Kanehl. And, coming out of the bullpen and into the rotation, Terry Leach. Later

Last time I heard, to be eligible to vote, a writer has to currently cover baseball as his (her?) regular beat, and have covered baseball for at least ten consecutive years. Many of the long-term writers in New York have moved on to become "columnists" (e.g.- Mike Lupica) and I don't think they're eligible to vote. Later

Net winningest? Oh well, that answers about this year or career and eliminates some players (like Lee of the Cubs and Sheffield of the Yanks) who were injured this past year. So, here's how I prepared my list. I evaluated players: Against other player in their league Other players at their position Total contribution as a player. To me that includes defense. So some famous names from that league where pitchers don't bat are omitted from my list. This also means that I gave extra consideration to players who play more difficult defensive positions. I also considered pitchers on this list who I felt were the "top" in what they do. Then I ranked each league's players against each other to come up with my rankings(best to worst among their league's top 10). Here goes: AL Santana Vlad Guerrero Carlos Guillen Jater Mariano Rivera Joe Mauer Jermayne Dye Manny Ramirez A-Rod Robinson Cano NL Ryan Howard Albert Pujols Webb Soriano Beltran Reyes Utley Oswalt A. Point of Order. Do you want the 10 players we think are the best in each league, or the ones we think are most valuable this year? There's a difference, especially if one player was injured for most of this year, but when healthy is one of the best. edit: or, if a great player had an off year this year, but is generally one of the best. 9. Someone told me there is a candy bar called "Pronk" sold in Cleveland. Not sure if it was named after him, or he got the nickname after the candy. Later
  10. This vote was interesting. Maybe the voters just looked at the power numbers. Or they didn't get to see too much of Jeter, who arguably had a deserving year. Or, the out of towners were swayed by the numberous articles about Jeter's anti-MVP-like dealings with A-Rod. Quien sabe? Later
  11. I remember when all three Alou brothers played in a game against the Mets. The fans in the stands would yell "Hey Alou! Which Alou are you?" Yes, I'm an old fart. sigh - thanks for reminding me. Later
  12. The fact that the bullpen-poor Reds put him on waivers may be a red flag. But Omar seems to see things that aren't obvious to us mere mortals. He might be worth the investment, especially until some of the Mets' FA bullpenners can be re-signed. Later
  13. I'll miss Owens, too. He seemed to have electric stuff and his control was just bad enough to keep batters from digging in. Lindstrom never seemed to be consistent in harnessing his almost-00 mph fastball. Later
  14. ]In other moves, the Mets also claimed right-hander Jason Standridge off waivers from Cincinnati and purchased the contract of outfielder Carlos Gomez from Double-A Binghamton. Later
  15. Soriano a Cub. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AjGdyW307hVQMIoyTRdReR8RvLYF?slug=cubssoriano&prov=st&type=lgns That's a lot of money, AND years. Thoughts? Later
  16. From the BaseballAmerica wrapup of the AFL:While righthander Bobby Parnell had a 7.48 ERA in Hawaii Winter Baseball, he'd found his groove with a move to North Shore's bullpen, throwing seven scoreless innings over three outings. Later
  17. I wouldn't say it was the worst, but it sure made me feel funny. I was at the Ted in Atlanta (nice ballpark, BTW) and went to the counter for a beer. I got carded! Imagine, I was a few months short of my 60th birthday, and I got carded. Looking back, it actually made me feel pretty good. Then someone told me that by law, they have to card everyone. Oh well. 18. ]"How do you have a guy be manager of the year with a losing record?" said the equally flabbergasted Fregosi. He should know all about managers with a losing record. He was one. Combined w-l pct for teams he managed was .484. Later

    New Rules!

  20. Nice pickup, especially for that amount of money. He will make a nice platoon with Valentin who, IIRC didn't exactly kill lefty pitching. I wanted the Mets to try to get him in the pre-Kaz days. I be happy. Later
  21. He and I share a birth date (different years, of course). It was cool having a Met born on that day. Now.... emptiness. Good luck, Heath. Later
  22. Ira, do you also remember that Mantle beat out a lot of bunt hits by pushing the bunt past the pitcher toward the second baseman? I wonder why the faster players these days don't try that. Later

    CitiField

I heard that Gov. Pataki actually said something like this: ]"I grew up a Yankee fan and to be honest, it didnt' break my heart when the Giants and Dodgers left in the early 60's" Please tell me he didn't say that at a Mets- related event. He couldn't even weave something about the Mets in his comments, but named every other team that played here in his lifetime? What reaction did he hope to achieve by saying that? How much of a schmuck is he? EDIT: plus, he got the freakin' decade wrong. Later
  24. The only negative comments I've read about Lee are about his defense. But IIRC he stole almost 20 bases this year. Is his perceived defensive problem about his speed or just about his glove? Later
  25. Since this was going to be split off anyhow, why wasn't it moved to the non-baseball forum? Later
